THE WEEK WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL

02

Dear Branksome Community,

I enjoyed meeting with many of our parents at the Canadian Embassy last Friday. It was especially nice to have so many fathers join us at the coffee as well as our mothers. Thank you so much for making the time to stop by. It is always wonderful to connect with you in person. It was also a great opportunity to hear your feedback and questions. We can better support our girls when we partner together with our families and community.

This week and next week I will continue to meet with more of our parents on campus and share recent school developments. It is so important that our parents understand the school’s Vision and Mission and learn all about the wonderful learning that is happening in school.

I am very excited of the recent hires we have successfully secured. Over the last few days, I have been in meetings at the headquarters of a prestigious Kindergarten in China to discuss collaborative opportunities to deliver camps at our school during Summer break. I am looking forward to the coming months and am excited as we prepare for the new Academic Year.

As we move forward, I will do my best to clearly communicate on schools developments with you as often as possible. The Principal Coffees are a great way to get connected and to share such information. If you haven’t already signed up, please sign up for one of these opportunities.    We invite you to sign up for the next Principal Coffee to be held in Jeju.

A MESSAGE OF THANKS — Thank you for your on-going support

It was wonderful to see so many parents at events that were held at school. We are especially excited for the upcoming Grade 5 Sustainability and Technology fair which will be the first one held at Branksome Hall Asia on February 25. The Fair will take place in the area that connects the Lower Junior Pod and the Upper Junior Pod (on the first floor) and will take place between 1:50 - 3:00 p.m. Please join us if you can as there is much to learn about the programs at Branksome Hall Asia.

BRANKSOME HALL ASIA SCHOOL UNIFORM COATS

Students look smart in their black Branksome Hall Asia school uniform coats. One of the features of the coats is that they have hoods to protect students from rain, wind, snow etc. Please remember that the coats are designed to shelter students from any bad weather conditions as well as to keep them warm. Students do not need umbrellas in additional to their Branksome Hall Asia coats, so please do not send your child to school with an umbrella. When Spring comes, a waterproof light jacket in plain school colors with a hood is recommended.

JUNIOR SCHOOL ON SCREEN — BTVJunior is back in action

By Jose Zarate, Film Teacher & Ben Drury, Grade 3 Teacher / Grade 2/3 Coordinator

Branksome Hall Asia has been seeking creative ways to communicate with our community. BTV has been a popular medium in the past years. Mr. Zarate and Mr. Drury teamed up to re-establish BTVJunior as a CASE activity for our Junior School students.

Going forward, JS students will work with Mr. Zarate and Mr Drury with the aim to produce a new episode every 3-4 weeks. Last Friday we helped create a script for the next episode and there will be segments on up-coming events in the Junior School, a piece on the 'Energy Fair', the PYP Grade 5 Exhibition. We hope you enjoy our videos. BTV and BTVJunior are broadcast on KCTV channel 567 under the supervision of Mr. Zarate. Video Clip:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7gIYzngWIQ&feature=youtu.be

DISCOVERING OUR PLANET — Grade 1 field trip update by Mrs. Katie Lore, Grade 1 Teacher Upon returning back from the Lunar New Year, Grade 1 students began to inquire deeper into our new Unit of Inquiry, ‘Sharing the Planet’. We focused on the study of typical landforms found on Jeju including; mountains, hills, beaches, and forests. In class, students created landform dictionaries to learn new vocabulary and to practice their research skills. Students also used dictionaries to help them predict and write about what kinds of landforms the students would see during their field trip.  The students enjoyed a fun-filled adventurous day exploring landforms during their field trip to Songaksan and Yongmeori Beach. The class was able to see and identify first hand many of the landforms and natural features we had studied in the classroom. The field trip also provided an opportunity to engage in discussions about how humans are impacting the natural environments of Jeju when using them for leisure activities.

HAVING A BALL WITH NETBALL  by Mrs. Michelle Curtin, Grade 2 Teacher Intern On February 19th Grade 4 and 5 Netball Players were invited to attend a friendly coaching session at NLCS. Since many of the players from both NLCS and BHA are new to netball, the purpose of this meeting was for the players to train together, have fun and work as a team with the NLCS.

The players from both schools were randomly divided into three groups. These groups completed a rotation of activities that included shooting, passing and a five-a-side match. This event was a great chance for the girls to increase their skills as the coaches coached the students through the drills and while they played.

Netball is a fun, fast-paced game that requires fitness, ball skills and most importantly, teamwork. It may look similar to basketball, however, players may not run or dribble with the ball! The students have been learning about netball as part of their CASE by practicing various ball skills, such as passing, catching and shooting. They have also learned that they need to cooperate with their team members in order to successfully attack, defend and score goals.

This was the first netball meeting with NLCS and plans are underway to have another friendly training session in the near future, which will hopefully lead to regular, competitive netball matches.

GRADE 11 GROUP PROJECT

By Kathy Binns, Head of Science

February also saw the 2019 Grade 11 Group 4 project — a three-day exploration of real-world issues working across and within Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Environmental Systems and Societies and Design Technology.

The aim of this year’s Group 4 project was to consider the question, “To what extent does scientific knowledge affect the way we perceive issues?” The wording of the question was designed to include an element of Theory of Knowledge, with the aim of having students explore knowledge issues relating to perception.

Students spent a morning traveling to three different farms which produce food for Murung Farms, an organic agricultural cooperative located ten minutes from Branksome Hall Asia.

The students visited an orange orchard, a citrus fruit greenhouse, and a small organic vegetable operation. At each location, the farm owner discussed the requirements of producing a good crop, and some of the technical and economic challenges they must overcome. Students had the opportunity to ask a range of questions, leading towards group research projects.

After the field trip, students formalized their research questions and researched possible solutions using at least three different perspectives found within the Group 4 subjects.

Research questions generated by the students included:

What are the impacts of livestock emissions on human society in the U.S., and how can we reduce the air pollution they cause?

How can we maximize living space in overcrowded cities like Mumbai, India?

How can we use technology to eliminate the need for real animals while entertaining and educating visitors to zoos?

The second and third days of the event were spent on further research, building prototypes and preparation for presentations to an authentic audience — in this case, grade 4 classes at BHA.

BUILDING A SPIRIT of SERVICE — at Branksome Hall Asia

By Ms. Rachel Briard, MYP English and Humanities

In our recent Spirit Week Fundraiser, the Middle and Senior School students were able to show their school spirit and personalities by dressing according to different themes.

This year, our themed days were Pajama Day, Crazy Hair/Sock Day, Traditional Clothing and Twin Day. Through this fundraiser, students not only showed their school spirit in a creative way, but also raised over 1,400,000 KRW for the Goodwork Foundation. Profits will be used to help provide supplies during our upcoming service trip at the end of June to South Africa.
