THE SURVEY RESULTS TELL A STORY

Gallup’s data show a strong correlation between respect for employee opinions and business results. Gallup asks a person’s level of agreement with the statement, “At work, my opinions seem to count.” Higher agreement with this statement corresponds with better safety, customer loyalty, productivity, employee retention and profits.
Why? Probably because helping to come up with the solution to a problem increases ownership in making that solution work. People may think, “Tell me exactly what to do and I’ll give you malicious compliance, or at best, sullen capitulation. Ask me how I think it could be done, and I'll do everything I can to make my idea work.”

“I personally greet everyone every morning with a smile!”

“I hand-delivered a self-made certificate, with a pen and a treat attached, to co-workers who helped me out. I mistakenly mailed a Priority Mail Express mailpiece without a phone number and needed to track it down. I called one person in the dispatch unit, who searched to locate a pen to write down the tracking number. She was new and asked a co-worker to help. Finally, a third co-worker retrieved the mailpiece, wrote the phone number on it and expedited it. It was a little thing which made a huge difference. The certificate took about two minutes to put together. The appreciation from my three co-workers in thank yous, smiles and laughter and will last a lifetime!”

“I make it a habit to compliment my co-workers, managers, clerks, carriers and support staff — we have to appreciate each other! I also send cards to employees who have taken new positions or who get recognized for making a positive impact. I write a note in a card, put a stamp on it and mail it. People love it, and we are in the mail business after all!”

“My Detached Mail Unit caught two big errors in the past month, totaling $7.5 million. I sent them all an email and commended them on their hard work and great catches.”

“I carried mail myself and as a supervisor, I really do understand what carriers go through. I always pay attention to the weather we are expecting. With a heat and humidity wave predicted, I scoured local stores and bought all of the cooling towels they had and brought them back to the station. I had the opening supervisor let the carriers and clerks know there was one for everyone and tell them I wanted to help them stay cool because I knew it was going to be oppressive.”

It is a day specially designed to show gratitude for the hard work and dedication of all USPS employees. How do you plan to celebrate National Postal Workers Day? (No, not with a day off.)
