WHAT IS ENGAGE WITH ARCHITECTURE?WHAT IS ENGAGE WITH ARCHITECTURE?
The Arts Council and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht
launched the ENGAGE scheme in August 2010.
The purpose of the scheme was to support initiatives that aim to enhance
and extend the public’s experience of and engagement with architecture.
Offaly County Council received funding in 2011 for a packed programme
and again in 2012. Refer to www.offaly.ie/engage.

PAVILIONPAVILIONPAVILIONPAVILIONThe Pavilion was a design and Build project involving 3 schools in Offaly;
Tullamore College, Oakland’s Community College in Edenderry and St.
Brendan’s Community School in Birr
The aims of the project were:
1. To create a greater awareness of Architecture and the built
environment, with a group of students, through the completion of
research and design of a small structure.
2. To increase the awareness of the general public of Architecture
through the construction of the Pavilion and its exhibition.

1. What is a Pavilion?2. What is Architecture?3. Is Architecture evident in structures other than buildings?4. What examples of similar pavilions exist in Ireland & Worldwide?

The second phase focused on the design ideas of each group. Classes split
into teams of three and design discussions were conducted.
Key elements of this phase that were discussed were-
1. How does the pavilion create a space and how will the public
interact with the design?interact with the design?
2. Presentation methods, freehand sketch, technical drawing, 3D
drawing and model making.g g

The closing date for the competition was 18 February 2012.
All entries were collected and scanned for presentation to the whole group and judged on 23 whole group and judged on 23 February 2012.

This entry was chosen as one that had
developed from an original concept, based on
boating in Offaly, through detailed designs,
models and computer packages.

STAGE 3 STAGE 3 –– CONSTRUCTIONCONSTRUCTIONFurther meetings were held with the TY students to develop the design
and to finalise the construction method and detailing. and to finalise the construction method and detailing.
1. Local firm Glenn Wood provided assistance for the construction
phase through the use of their Design and Production facilities.
2. The Vessel was detailed to be constructed in demountable timber
sections with a painted finish.
3. Construction started on 18/02/2012 with 7 students and 5 Glenn
Wood skilled Craftsmen, 1 Architect and 1 School Teacher. The

A SPACE FOR MEETINGA SPACE FOR MEETINGAdam Hernes with Kenny Lyons and Associates Architects carried out workshops with Transition Year students in Tullamore College as part of the pavilion project Discussions involved architecture and the spaces it the pavilion project. Discussions involved architecture and the spaces it creates with a special focus on the spaces where young people meet. An audio visual presentation on display within the pavilion forms the culmination of their work.

Based on the 2011 ENGAGE with Architecture exhibition of owners and their buildings, the theme was developed by interviewing owners and craftsmen to understand how the buildings and craft shaped their lives.

They can also be viewed by following the links on www.offaly.ie/engage or by scanning the QR code. CDs of the full recordings can be borrowed from the local libraries. g

The children were then encouraged to “Think outside the box” and design their own visions of Architectureown visions of Architecturefor County Offaly in the future on a supplied cardboard box. Over three hundred students participated and all of their designs were brought together to form two large 3d cube exhibits.cube exhibits.
