P sychological trauma during childhood can lead to a lifetime of mental health issues and unrealized potential. But what if we could turn back the clock, and change the circumstances around an individual’s childhood so that such trauma was avoided? In a way, that’s the goal of People Incorporated’s Parent Support Outreach Program (PSOP). For the past eight years, PSOP staff has been helping Minnesota families to rise above the challenges that can derail kids and parents—challenges such as poverty, health problems, and even homelessness. Developed and launched under the auspices of Children’s Home Society, PSOP became part of People Incorporated in 2012. PSOP is a lifeline for families dealing with multiple stressors that may put their children at risk for child abuse or neglect. The program’s outreach staff provides voluntary support services such as case management, parenting education, family crisis counseling, child development support, and help with basic needs (from warm clothing to gasoline). Some of the families PSOP works with are at risk of losing their children due to documented risk factors, and some are active with Child Protective Services. PSOP staff use a strengths-based approach to engage families in improving their situation. This is truly special work, and requires a combination of skill, compassion and commitment. Here is a client story shared by our PSOP staff: I have a client who was referred because her boyfriend had assaulted her in front of her children. When I got involved, he was no longer in the home. She was struggling financially and was severely depressed, having suicidal thoughts every day, and having major doubts about her ability to be a parent. I was able to get her connected with mental health services and sort out her finances. She told me if I had not called and offered to help, she is sure she would have let the abuser back into her home simply because she did not feel (at the time) that she could manage her own finances and take care of her children. She is doing really well now. PSOP is an integral part of People Incorporated’s work with children and families, and our staff is frequently looked to by counties outside of our service area seeking advice on launching similar services. This comment, made by a PSOP program participant, sums up the difference this work can make in a family’s journey together: Tears are running down my cheek as I type this because, for so long, I thought I wouldn’t make it—much less be there for my kids. Psychological trauma during childhood can lead to a lifetime of mental health issues

and unrealized potential.

The program’s outreach staff provides voluntary support services such as case management, parenting education, family

crisis counseling, child development support, and help with basic needs (from warm clothing to gasoline). Some of the families PSOP works with are at risk of losing their children due to documented risk factors, and some are active with Child Protective Services.

PSOP staff use a strengths-based approach to engage families in improving their situation. This is truly special work, and requires a combination of skill, compassion and commitment. Here is a client story shared by our PSOP staff:

I have a client who was referred because her boyfriend had assaulted her in front of her children. When I got involved, he was no longer in the home. She was struggling financially and was severely depressed, having suicidal thoughts

every day, and having major doubts about her ability to be a parent. I was able to get her

connected with mental health services and sort out her finances.

This comment, made by a PSOP program participant, sums up the difference this work can make in a family’s journey together:

Tears are running down my cheek as I type this because, for so long, I thought I wouldn’t make it—much less be there for my kids. I am very grateful to you. Thank you so much.

Making such a huge difference for a struggling family is something our PSOP staff should be very proud of.

Third Annual Beer Tasting—Summit Brewery, June 5

Meet the Co-Chairs of the Changing Minds InitiativeKen and Pat Duncan are co-chairs of the Changing Minds Initiative, People Incorporated’s outreach campaign aimed at changing public percep-tions around mental illness. The Changing Minds luncheon, raising funds to fight stigma, will take place on June 26 at

the Crowne Plaza hotel in downtown St. Paul. The following is an edited transcript of a conversation that People Incorporated staff member Max Morris had with Ken and Pat on February 10, 2014 .

Max: How did you become involved with People Incorporated?

Ken: [Deceased board president] John [Osborn] and I had known each other for a long time. I got to know him when we worked together for eight or nine years at Cargill Financial. We stayed in touch even after both of us left Cargill. When we lost our daughter [to mental illness], the Osborns reached out to us. They invited us to a People Incorporated event, and we learned about the Agency and its mission. After that, John recruited me to the Board.

Max: What about People Incorporated appealed to you?

Pat: The fact that the Osborns spoke highly of People Incorpo-rated was important. As I had opportunities to meet CEO Tim Burkett and other staff, I felt like their hearts were in the right place. They are focused entirely on helping people who are struggling. As a supporter, you really want to be at the sort of organization where that’s the bottom line.

Ken: What struck me most about People Incorporated and its approach is that they work to teach the skills necessary to cope and to manage, both as an individual and in relation to the broader world. This just seems to resonate throughout the organization. Whether it’s homeless services or children and families, it’s all about teaching people the skills they need to live their lives productively, independently, and within the broader community.

Max: The Changing Minds Initiative is all about fighting the stigma that surrounds mental illness. What are your thoughts on this stigma?

Ken: There’s been a lot of progress in stigma reduction over the last couple of decades. I think there’s much greater transparency today. I had a cousin who was in a mental health institution. I didn’t know about him until I was 18 or 19 years old. His name was Roger. Such a secret probably wouldn’t be kept for so long today. I think the world has come a long way in reducing stigma, but we still have a long way to go.

Pat: We all know that you can’t go through life without experiencing some kind of depression. We don’t have control over that. It’s just part of life. So what are we doing to help? I think that has to be our motto. Just being there for people really matters.

Max: What would make this luncheon a success for you?

Ken: We want to get the message out there in terms of what People Incorporated is doing. Success is about increasing awareness, increasing dialogue, and increasing transparency. At the end of the day, if you do that, the funding will come because people will care.

Page 3: Engaging Families at Risk - People Incorporated · 2019. 1. 21. · struggling financially and was severely depressed, having suicidal thoughts every day, ... if you do that, the

While watching Anderson Cooper talk to a Virginia state senator about his son’s mental illness a few weeks ago, I was initially surprised to hear them both agree we’re still in the Dark Ages when it comes to the stigma surrounding mental illness. I was surprised because I see so much more openness and acceptance today than there used to be! But as I pon-dered it some more, I realized they were right. While some types of mental illness have become quite socially acceptable over the last twenty years, others remain seldom mentioned or discussed.

It’s not unlike the layers of an onion. At the outermost layer we have depression and anxiety. Beneath that, we see eating disorders. Bi-polar disorder is a little farther in, and schizo-phrenia is just beneath that. At the core, buried deep within this onion, are suicide attempts (regardless of the type of mental illness involved). We as a society have done a very good job of peeling away that first layer. Our hesitancy to acknowledge and talk about depression and anxiety has largely been overcome. Just the other day, I overheard a trio of teenagers talking about their depression at a local coffee shop so openly that, even though I wasn’t eavesdropping, I heard them discussing things like what a bummer it was to not want to get out of bed in the morning, and what medications they’d tried, what had and hadn’t worked, and even what side effects they’d encountered. No way would this have happened twenty years ago!

On the other hand, I see my own family’s case. We’re still struggling to come to terms with my sister’s lifetime schizophrenia, and my brother’s suicide—the two innermost layers of this onion. As with any onion, the more we try to peel away, the more tears we shed and the more guilt and shame we feel. Even between these two innermost layers, there’s still a huge gap! I talked publicly about my sister’s schizophrenia for about a decade before I realized that I had never said a word publicly about my brother due to my own sense that I was partly responsible, and didn’t want other people to know. Quite a revelation!

So we do still have a long way to go. But we’re headed in the right direction, and I believe there will come a time when the center layers of the onion will still bring tears, but we will no longer cry secretly.

Sincerely,

M. Tim Burkett, Ph.D., L.P.CEO

We’ve come a long way, but we still have so much farther to go…

What’s a ‘CIRCLEbox’?CIRCLEbox is an initiative being developed by People Incorporated that will provide social service practitioners with comprehensive tools and resources to help clients enhance their parenting skills.

Stay tuned for more on this exciting project!

Artability Opportunities Abound!2014 is shaping up to be a big year for People Incorporated’s Artability initiative. We’ve partnered with the Amherst-Wilder Foundation in St. Paul to display artwork from Artability artists, both veterans and first-time participants, in two of the Founda-tion’s on-site galleries through May 16. The first floor gallery is open to the public during business hours. More than 40,000 people move through the space each year as they attend meetings and events!

In addition to the partnership with Wilder, People Incorporated has partnered once again this year with ArtiCulture, a local art education non-profit, to host a series of six-week arts workshops. The workshops will be held in ArtiCulture’s studio space on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis. Courses are listed below, and will be held on Fridays from 5pm-7pm beginning April 11. For more information, or to be added to the Artability mailing list, contact the Artability coordinator at [email protected] or 651-288-3532.

The Unconventional ArtistApril 11–MAy 16 Think you can’t ‘do’ art? Think again! Discover alternative methods of creativity—collage, stencil, monotype and more. Create textures, patterns and fine art imagery by learning simple stamping and printing, stenciling, layering, and collage methods. Let the creativity begin!

Journaling Through Photography MAy 30–July 11 (no clAss July 4) Take a personal approach to seeing the world through different lenses. You will be given innovative approaches to journaling and self exploration, using photography as a springboard for creativity.

Art of the PrintJuly 25–August 29 This class will teach printmaking techniques to create both one-of-a-kind and multiple images. You will learn about print

design and composition including use of positive and negative, reductive techniques, texture, color, and use of natural materials. Students also will want to experiment with our vintage printing press!

Inside OutsidesepteMber 12–october 17 What we feel on the inside may sometimes or often be different than what we portray to the outside world. Through the creative process, we’ll find ways to explore concepts around expressing who you are, both internally and externally.

MosaicsnoveMber 7–DeceMber 19 (no clAss noveMber 28) Creating a mosaic—putting it together piece-by-piece—can be symbolic of personal healing as you bring about a com-pleted work of art. We Love Our Volunteers!People

Incorporated has a robust

corps of volunteers that help our programs and clients with everything from house painting and gardening to outreach and craft projects, and we’re always looking for new re-cuits! To join us for the projects listed below, or to learn more about how you can become in-volved at one of our many program locations throughout the Twin Cities, please contact Katie Burns at 651-288-3532.

Community Meals at Project RecoveryThe volunteer coordinator works with a group of at least four vol-unteers to plan a potluck-style lunch for homeless clients at Project Recovery, People Incorporated’s homeless drop-in center in St Paul. This is a perfect opportunity to fulfill a need for the homeless clients we serve while learning more about what Project Recovery can do for them.

Gardening TeamsWe need both individuals and groups to join our garden instal-lation teams this spring at seven different People Incorporated pro-gram sites throughout the Twin Cities. We provide the soil, plants and gloves, but we need your energy and enthusiasm to make

these wonderful gardens a success! We plan a mix of in-ground and raised-bed set-ups that include a variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers. These gardens provide our clients with a beautiful and rich environment whether they are working in the gardens with us or just enjoying a summer’s day.

What’s Happening?• Kudos to Our Adult Mental Health Urgent Care team,

recently honored as part of three different awards bestowed on the East Metro Mental Health Crisis Alliance. The awards were as follow:

° Provider of the Year, NAMI Minnesota;

° Local Government Innovation Award, UofM Humphrey School of Public Affairs;

° Commissioner’s Circle of Excellence Award, MN Department of Human Services.

• Congratulations to People Incorporated staff member Emily Ross on being named to the NAMI Minnesota Board of Directors! Emily is a senior mental health practitioner at our Maghakian treatment facility.

• The Star Tribune recently published a Letter to the Editor from Homeless Services division director, Geoff Meyer, aimed at helping readers wondering how best to react when crossing paths with a long-term-homeless individual. It was a wonderful letter that

reminds us that we need to treat the homeless like people first, and like homeless people second. The full letter is accessible on our website in the News section under About Us.

• MinnPost recently published an opinion piece by CEO Tim Burkett on the worsening problem of individuals being discharged from treatment programs with no place to go other than back to ‘couch hopping’ or homeless shelters. The piece is accessible on our website in the News section under About Us.

• We’re in the midst of producing short videos depicting the everyday work of our seven service divisions. The first four are complete, and are posted on our YouTube channel at YouTube.com/user/PeopleIncorporatedMN. Take a look!

• People Incorporated unveiled a new structure, look and feel for its website on February 28. Let us know what you think by e-mailing [email protected].

S.A.F.E.—Support, Advocacy, Family, EducationMental illness has a life-changing impact on all members in a family—not just on the person living with the illness. People Incorporated’s S.A.F.E. groups help families dealing with the mental illness of a loved one by offering a safe place to ask questions, meet others dealing with similar issues, and learn more from mental health practitioners and other experts. Each meeting features a presentation by a mental health professional designed to help attendees understand mental illness and how best to support their loved ones living with a mental health diagnosis. Meetings take place on the second and last Wednesdays of each month at People Incorporated facilities in St. Paul and Mendota Heights. Topics to be addressed during 2014 include but are not limited to the following:

Thanks to Our Volunteer Holiday Card Makers! We had another great year of volunteer participation in our annual Holiday Cards for Clients project, with cards coming from all over the United States and even from Canada! Volunteers once again created handmade holiday cards in their homes, businesses and college campuses this past fall, and by late November our mail had been inundated with more than 1,000 individual cards for our clients.

These cards make such a positive difference in the lives of those we serve, and we are grateful to have so many caring and dedicated volunteers. Thanks for helping to make a difference in the lives of our clients!
