Engineering Design ProcessState the Design Problem

Step 1The basic design idea is conceived by or assigned to the design engineer. The conception phase usually includes brainstorming, which is collaboration among the team to arrive at the best ideas, and research. All the possibilities for the new design are explored.

Terrorist are threatening to detonated explosives at U.S. embassies around the world using tractor trailers, box

trucks and moving vans.

Engineering Design ProcessAnalyze the need

Step 2The design engineer carefully analyzes the need for the product to determine if it is practical and marketable.

Do we need to protect the ambassadors and others within the confines of the embassy gate?

Engineering Design ProcessSet Objectives

Step 3General and specific objectives are set for the design. At this point, a proposal must be written which explains the problem to be solved, the design concept including specifications, and estimated costs needed tomake the design.

We will design a barrier that can stop a truck weighing, 55,000 lbs. that is moving at 55 m.p.h without any part

of the truck of explosives contained in the truck penetrating the embassy walls.

Engineering Design ProcessCreate Alternatives

Step 4Serious consideration is given to the physical design of the product. Constraints and criteria for the new design are calculated and specified. Generally, several alternative designs are conceived and sketched or generated on a CAD system.

Engineering Design ProcessCheck for Feasibility

Step 5The various design concepts are checked for feasibility. The design engineer will want to know which concepts best meet the design objectives, which will be most marketable, etc.

Engineering Design ProcessSelect Solution/Develop Prototype

Step 6The best and most feasible solution is carefully selected and a prototype is constructed to test and evaluate the design using specifications. The prototype can be a physical model or a computer-generated model of the design.

Engineering Design ProcessFeedback/Market Response

Step 7The prototype is generally submitted to a select group of consumers for market response before final drawings and specifications are prepared. If changes are needed based on this feedback, the design process loops back through step 4.

What does the end user think? Do they like the idea? Do they agree that it fits their needs? Public opinion?

Engineering Design ProcessDraw the Design

Step 8Final drawings are prepared, along with specifications and all other documentation required for manufacture.

This is an excellent idea!
