Remarkable opportunitiesSince graduating from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Aviation, the sky has been the limit for young cadet pilot Angus Slattery. Having grown up with family in the industry —and a broad travel history to his name—Angus’ fitting decision to pursue a career in the cockpit has already proved rewarding. Jared has always had a curiosity about electronics and communication systems. As an engineering student, he continued to pursue this interest through a major in electrical and electronics engineering. ‘My degree has given me knowledge across many field of electrical engineering including communication systems, electromagnetics, waves and propagation, practical electronics, power engineering and transmission, digital signal processing and microprocessors.’ Jared was able to extend his knowledge and gain valuable global experience in his final year through the completion of a thesis and work placement at Helmut Schmidt Universitat in Hamburg, Germany.

What you’ll study Engineering is one of the most creative professions—just look around you to see what engineers have conceived, designed and created, all informed with strong scientific and mathematical knowledge. This newly designed degree has a major focus on learning by doing, with hands-on projects from first year. Choose from one of nine major areas of engineering specialty, and combine your major with minors, which will distinguish you from other graduates in the marketplace and give you the chance to develop your particular interests.

You’ll learn from experts who are part of the cutting-edge research being conducted alongside government and leading industry partners. Degree structure

1ST YEAR You’ll gain fundamental skills, practical experience and a broad view of engineering. You’ll study foundation courses, undertake project work to develop your design skills and give you experience of all areas of engineering, which will help you decide the best major for you. If you know what major you want to study, you can choose at the beginning of your first year. If you are yet to decide, you’ll make this decision later in your first year.

2ND AND 3RD YEAR From second year onwards you’ll focus on your chosen major, which you can complement with a minor specialisation to create a unique skill set.

4TH YEARIn your final year, you’ll take the skills gained in your first three years of study and enhance your employment opportunities through an engineering project placement with an industry partner, in Australia or overseas.

CIVIL ENGINEERINGGold Coast, NathanMany of the buildings and physical infrastructure in our modern society are made possible by civil engineers. Civil engineers support the design and development of essential services, and manage and improve the built environment.

By studying civil engineering, you’ll develop your knowledge in the planning, design and construction of buildings and infrastructure such as roads, bridges, rail networks, irrigation, drainage and flood mitigation systems, airports, water and wastewater treatment plants, port harbours, commercial buildings and residential houses. CIVIL AND ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERINGGold Coast This major combines civil and structural engineering with the creative design and environmental sustainability aspects from architecture. In this major, you’ll focus on the development, construction and design of electronic parts and systems—ranging from everyday items to applications for large corporations and industries. ELECTRONIC AND UAV ENGINEERINGNathanAs Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are rapidly finding application in many areas, the need for both certified pilots and engineers to design and maintain these vehicles grows. The Electronic and UAV Engineering major offers UAV flight training and professional pilot licence theory. The major will provide a pathway to being a highly qualified UAV pilot while giving the graduate full engineering qualifications.

Career opportunitiesGraduates will be employable as UAV pilots, UAV designers, engineers in the aviation and general electronics industries. This major is also a pathway for students wishing to be a pilot engineer but with a private rather than commercial licence.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERINGNathanThe wants and needs of a rapidly expanding global population means it has never been more important to shape our environmental future. In this major, you’ll develop an understanding of complex environmental problems and issues, and of the challenges facing environmental sustainability. You’ll learn to design creative solutions and manage key projects associated with holistic environmental protection in the area of air quality, water and wastewater, and waste management.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERINGGold Coast, NathanMechanical engineering combines creativity, knowledge and analytical tools to complete the difficult task of shaping an idea into reality. Mechanical engineers design, analyse, manufacture and maintain mechanical systems. This major is built on a strong foundation of theory and reinforced by practical experience and innovation. It’s underpinned by our ethos of learning by doing, which means you’ll be equipped with a fundamental understanding of how things work and be able to apply this knowledge to design and develop next generation technologies.

Currently working as an engineer with Brisbane consultancy GHD, Brodie Chan’s engineering degree included access to major engineering companies, projects and programs in Australia and internationally. Brodie was also involved in the Griffith Honours College, which gave him the opportunity to volunteer in Vietnam, attend the APEC Youth Summit in Bali and co-ordinate local volunteering projects. Brodie also travelled to Kassel, Germany, as part of a four-week engineering and cultural training module. ‘Studying at Griffith has broadened my perspective and given me the confidence, opportunities and the practical tools to go on and achieve my goals as a civil engineer,’ he says.

You’ll learn about developing and using new materials and technologies, as well as design and analysis using advanced software and computer systems. Mechanical engineers are sought for their wide breadth of skills and knowledge across a range of industries—from designing artificial hearts and life support systems through to developing cars and planes.

Career opportunitiesMechanical engineering is the most diverse of all the engineering disciplines, and as a graduate you’ll be prepared for work in a range of areas including design, research and development and production. SOFTWARE ENGINEERINGNathanSoftware engineers design and implement the software systems our society depends on—from biotechnology to sports to submarines. In this major, you’ll gain a foundation in mathematics, computer systems, engineering principles and information systems. You’ll develop strong professional capabilities in programming and software development as well as program construction with the multidisciplinary IT and electronic background. You’ll complete project work developing software for real clients, ensuring that as a graduate you’ll have practical skills in teamwork, project management and quality management. You’ll also learn about international standards and industry best practice techniques.

Career opportunitiesYou’ll be prepared for a career in software development and be equipped to meet the demands of the rapidly changing software industry. You’ll find employment as a software architect, software developer, software engineer, software tester, IT project manager, systems analyst, security specialist, computational scientist, programmer, networking and communications specialist, or in research and development.

In her final year, Griffith mechanical engineering student Analeigh Angus secured a coveted role with mining company, Rio Tinto. A highly successful three-month tenure with Rio Tinto to fulfil course requirements of her Industry Affiliates Program (IAP) was more than enough time for the 21-year-old to mark herself as a genuine asset. She is viewed by the company in the highest regard, with her ability to analyse, interpret and advise on complex, operational procedures seen as a defining characteristic. ‘Griffith University offers a lot of opportunities, especially for people from small rural areas which really make you feel at home,’ she says. ‘You’re able to gain access to facilities and support services offered by the university and while it is a lot of hard work and requires a lot of determination; it really comes down to yourself and your own motivation.’

What you’ll study Engineering technologists bridge the gap between technicians and professional engineers and work with other professionals in solving engineering problems. This degree will prepare you for work as an engineering technologist, with the skills and knowledge needed to advise in planning, designing, operating and maintaining electronic engineering works. The first year of the degree includes engineering, mathematics, computing, digital electronics, design, instrumentation, communications, and materials and testing.

In the following two years, you’ll develop the skills in hardware and software design and implementation, which you’ll need to work in cutting-edge, high technology fields, including communications, microelectronics, computer systems, biomedical engineering and control systems (robotics). Subject to eligibility, students can transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (see page 08) on completion of first year.

Griffith Racing Team is a Formula SAE Team based at the Gold Coast campus. Each year, the team of Griffith students compete to design and build a small open-wheel race car. Through the competition students develop skills in design, management, manufacturing, communication, research and business operations. ‘These attributes are viewed positively by engineering firms Australia wide,’ says mechanical engineering student and team Project Manager, James Foster. ‘Two team members who studied engineering have already got jobs in their chosen fields—Reece Schmith at Mineral Technologies and Sean Lowndes at PWR Performance Products.’ In 2017 the team continued its success in the annual competition at Calder Park, placing second in acceleration and cost report for internal combustion.

When Peyton Thompson decided to pursue a career in IT, she was drawn to the practical experience and tangible skills the Bachelor of Applied Information Technology provided. ‘Griffith University was the only one to offer work integrated learning with accreditation,’ says Peyton. Exceeding expectationsThomas Spalding began his Criminology and Information Technology double degree in 2017. ‘Originally I chose criminology because I had an interest in the field but while studying I thought I might brush up on IT because cybercrime has a lot of potential for jobs.’ Thomas also says that the double degree has exceeded his expectations from both an academic and a social perspective. He hopes to work in fraud and cybercrime detection for a private institution before eventually moving into a role with the Australian Federal Police. ‘University has taught me that if you apply yourself and want something badly enough you will achieve your goals.’

Industry professionalsGrowing up, Oscar Soi knew he wanted to be a pilot. He moved to Australia to work towards this dream, undertaking a Bachelor of Aviation at Griffith before completing his commercial pilot licence in 2010. Oscar moved back home to Kenya where he landed his first job doing hops between Nairobi and the Masaai Mara and Serengeti game reserves. ‘I carried everything from passengers to food supplies and medicine. I saw the wildebeest migration from the air and have fond memories of chasing zebra and giraffes off the landing strips. Eventually, I got the chance to fly with the Kenya Wildlife Service into some of the most remote areas in Africa. One of my best experiences was flying game wardens into national parks to fight off poachers.’ Oscar got his big break in 2012 joining Kenya Airways as a First Officer. ‘My regular route network now includes Africa at large, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East.’

What you will study This degree will prepare you for a career in the aviation industry by developing your knowledge and skills in the practical aspects of commercial aircraft operations coupled with appropriate technical qualifications for industry employment. The core knowledge and skills gained through the degree provide a platform for lifelong learning in a rapidly changing industry.

The syllabus is designed to include the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) in accordance with the CASA curriculum and ‘frozen’ ATPL theory exams required by most airlines.

You will also undertake either the Instrument Rating Pathway (IR MEA) coupled with Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC), or Flight Instructor Rating Pathway (FIR).

Griffith Aviation’s MATESGriffith Aviation’s Mentoring Aviators Through Educational Support (MATES) program is open to all undergraduate aviation students, providing ongoing professional development and peer mentoring opportunities throughout your study program. At the outset, individuals are allocated into flight groups and nominated Flight Leaders and Deputy Flight Leaders who direct groups across numerous challenges throughout the duration of the program. Weekly networking events bring the entire cohort together in a social environment, where students gain practical insights to the industry, listening to guest speakers across the many and varied aviation professions.

The Griffith University Aviation Association (GUAvA)The Griffith University Aviation Association is a student club dedicated to all things aviation. The club enhances aviation students’ experiences, providing opportunities for students to participate in activities such as flying camps, social events and hangar tours. The club also supports the MATEs program through weekly BBQs, funding for inter-flight cups and the hosting of the annual awards night.

Griffith University Soaring Society (GUSS)GUSS aims to introduce recreational and competitive gliding to students and to unite Queensland gliding clubs and the Griffith community. Gliding provides students with the opportunity to not only gain flight experience early in their career, but also develop skills highly sought after within the aviation industry.

University applications are made through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) or the University Admissions Centre (UAC, for New South Wales applicants). In some circumstances, you may submit a direct application to Griffith. Applications are assessed on:

Eligibility

Subject prerequisitesSubject prerequisites are subjects that must be completed, and a minimum grade achieved, in order to be admitted to a degree. English is a prerequisite for all of our degrees and some degrees have additional prerequisites.

Prior Assumed KnowledgeIt is assumed that through your secondary school, or equivalent studies, you will have achieved a minimum level of knowledge in certain subjects, such as Maths (A, B or C), Physics, Chemistry or Biology. If you haven’t completed these subjects or don’t have the recommended level of prior knowledge, you can still be made an offer for the degree. However, if you want to gain this knowledge, you can take one of our bridging courses.

If you haven’t studied the prerequisite subjects for a degree, or if you have studied them but didn’t pass, you may be able to complete a bridging course. You can also look for other degrees that may provide a pathway to your preferred degree.

OP, ATAR, IB and Selection RankAn Overall Position (OP) is the tertiary entrance rank assigned to eligible Year 12 students in Queensland based on their performance in senior secondary school subjects.

An Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is the rank assigned to eligible Year 12 students in other Australian states and territories. Some high schools also offer the Diploma of the International Baccalaureate program.

If you don’t have an OP, ATAR or a Diploma of the International Baccalaureate, you can still receive a Selection Rank on the basis of bridging courses, tertiary admissions tests or work and life experience.

For students seeking entry to degrees from Trimester 1, 2021, the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will replace the Overall Position (OP) as the standard pathway to tertiary study for Queensland Year 12s. For further information, visit qtac.edu.au/atar-2020

Additional criteriaExperience-based entry schemeSome degrees, in particular those offered at the Queensland Conservatorium, require applicants to attend an audition and/or submit a folio of work. Offers are made to applicants’ highest eligible preference. Selection Ranks are an indication of the demand for a degree, and do not necessarily reflect the level of academic difficulty. Indicative Selection Ranks are not available for new degrees. Selection Ranks can change from year to year and should be used as a guide only.

Applicants over 18At Griffith, you are considered mature age if you are seeking entry to university and you are 18 years of age prior to the commencement of the next trimester.

Griffith Personal StatementSuccess at university is about much more than completing a qualification. The Griffith Personal Statement is an entry pathway available to mature students who don’t meet the academic entry requirements for a number of degrees. You may be invited to apply on the basis of your personal and professional skills and knowledge. You’ll be asked to answer a number of questions based on criteria we know are good predictors of success at university, including attributes such as commitment, preparation, self-reflection and experience. Griffith University Preparation Program If you are a non school-leaver who would like to undertake university study but lack the formal qualifications for admission, you may wish to apply for the Griffith University Preparation Program.

Griffith CollegeIf you haven’t achieved the OP or Selection Rank you were expecting, missed out on the degree of your choice, or are looking for alternative ways to get into university, you might consider completing a diploma at Griffith College. Located at the Gold Coast and Mt Gravatt campuses, Griffith College offers diplomas comprising courses comparable to those in some of our degrees. After successfully completing a Griffith College diploma, you’re guaranteed direct entry into a range of related Griffith degrees with up to a year’s credit. Conditions apply for some degrees.

You can list up to six preferences on your QTAC application or five preferences on your UAC application. You’ll receive an offer for the highest preference you’re eligible for. Here’s a guide to ordering your preferences:

1st and 2nd Desired degrees—these are degrees you really want to study and that you have a reasonable chance of gaining entry to.

3rd and 4th Preferred degrees—these are degrees that you want to study and have a good chance of gaining entry to.

5th and 6th Pathways—these are degrees or diplomas that will help you upgrade to one of your desired or preferred degrees.

• Nominating a degree for all preferences will give you the best chance of being offered a place at university.

• If you’re applying for a double degree, make sure you list the two component single degrees as preferences as well —these may be easier to gain entry to. You may have the chance to upgrade to the double degree after a year of study.

Accept your offer and enrolFind out about study costs and finance

6 7 QTAC and UAC offers rounds for study in Trimester 1 2019 intake commence in early August 2018. We recommend accepting your offer and enrolling as soon as possible to secure your place. You can then select your classes and create a timetable.

QTAC continuous offersGriffith commences making QTAC offers to eligible non school-leavers from August each year. Year 12 students may receive an offer as soon as results are released in December, which can assist with organising accommodation, changing preferences or seeking alternative study pathways.

Offers to some programs are made only during the mid-January offer round.

This means you have to wait until this date before you receive an offer. To check degrees and their offer round dates, visit qtac.edu.au

Credit for prior learningOnce you have been accepted into Griffith, you can apply for credit for prior learning, which can reduce the time it will take to complete your degree. Providing you can show that it’s relevant to your degree, you can be granted credit for formal study such as TAFE courses, non-formal learning, such as workplace training, and informal learning, such as work, social, family, hobby or leisure activities. DefermentDeferment allows you to delay the start of your studies, while still securing your offer. Deferment is not available for all degrees and cannot exceed 12 months. You can request to defer after you receive an offer. You can select the deferment option when you respond to your QTAC offer. For UAC, you can email [email protected] to request deferment.

Internal transferOnce you have been admitted to Griffith you have the option to apply for an internal transfer to another degree. Providing you meet the entry requirements for the degree you wish to transfer to, you do not need to reapply through QTAC or UAC.

After competing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, athlete Hannah Joye is looking forward to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. ‘I’m really excited for it,’ she said. ‘I’m sure everyone will be stoked to have it so close to watch and be a part of.’ The Bachelor of Science student said while balancing elite sport and study could be challenging, she loved to keep busy. ‘I’m always on the go and it’s a real blessing that Griffith Sports College has allowed me to be really flexible with university.’ Hannah believes having a healthy balance is key. ‘It’s important to not be so consumed by one thing in your life and experience other things,’ she said.

Griffith has one of the highest number of elite athlete students in the country. Through the Griffith Sports College (GSC), we provide dedicated assistance for more than 450 student athletes, helping them successfully balance the high demands of elite sport and university life. Our distinguished Alumni include: 55 Olympians, 10 Paralympians and more than 30 Commonwealth Games athletes.

Staff supportThe Griffith Sports College has a wealth of sporting and academic knowledge within its staff team including Olympic gold medalists Duncan Free OAM (GSC Director) and Naomi McCarthy (nee Castle) OAM (GSC Manager). Both Duncan and Naomi are Griffith alumni and understand the demands elite athletes face juggling training, competition and study and can provide mentoring and direct athlete support.

EligibilityIf you compete at state, national or international level in your sport, you might be eligible to join the Griffith Sports College.

Elite athletes* are identified as participating in an AIS and Griffith University-recognised sport. We base eligibility on advice from state and national sporting organisations, professional sporting clubs and/or recognised player associations.

As part of the Australian Institute of Sport’s (AIS) Elite Athlete Friendly University (EAFU) network, we work one-on-one with students and directly with teaching staff to provide a supportive environment for athletes.

Griffith College offers diplomas that provide an admission pathway to Griffith University if you don’t get in to your chosen degree. After completing your diploma, you’ll be eligible for entry to second year* of a Griffith bachelor degree, so you’ll lose no time in graduating.

Griffith College programs are equivalent to university-level study, and are delivered in a supportive and specialised learning environment to better prepare you for success in your bachelor degree.

And because Griffith College is situated on-campus at the Gold Coast and Mt Gravatt, you’ll have access to university facilities and become part of the Griffith community from day one.

Griffith College offers 11 diploma programs providing access to second year of more than 60 Griffith bachelor degrees across diverse study areas such as arts, commerce, hotel management, psychology, IT, science, nursing, health sciences, engineering, criminology and design over two trimesters.

* Entry into second year is dependent on successfully completing the Griffith College program and meeting degree admission requirements. Students must complete in their second or third years of the degree any first year core courses for which credit transfer has not been granted.

Foundation ProgramGriffith College also offers a Foundation Program, which is a bridging course for students who didn’t finish senior studies in high school. You’ll be trained in the knowledge and skills needed for successful university study and be able to acquire prerequisites for specific Griffith University degrees. Griffith College Foundation Program graduates are eligible to apply for many Griffith College diplomas and Griffith University degrees via direct application.

Joshua Holmes, (pictured left of photo) a final year Griffith ICT student and a co-founder of the University’s startup club, Studio 39, recently toured Silicon Valley and San Francisco. Joshua is part of the new movement of students seeking different outcomes from their university education. Rather than seeking employment or a career they are looking to establish their own startup. He was supported on his trip by a grant from the Griffith Science group. ‘The trip was ten days and we toured many of the top tech companies in the San Francisco bay area and Silicon Valley, including huge companies like Google and Facebook to smaller, more recent startups like electric skateboard manufacturer Boosted. ‘I want to work in an environment that fosters this innovation and speed of technology and values the same things I do.’
