Introduction

Engineering Leaders ScholarshipsThe Engineering Leaders Scholarship (ELS) programme aims to support undergraduates at UK Higher Education Institutions who demonstrate a passion for engineering, the potential to become leaders in engineering and who will act as role models to future engineers.

These scholarships help ambitious and inspiring students, who want to become leadership role models for the next generation of engineers to undertake an accelerated personal development programme.

Academy supportIf you are successful in your application, you will receive an exceptional package of support, including:

Primary• £5,000 to use on career development activities over 3 years• An annual training and networking event (over a weekend,

usually in September or October)• Access to Royal Academy of Engineering Fellows, Sainsbury

Management Fellows and ELS Alumni for advice and support

Additional• Invitations to Academy events and opportunities to

participate in other activities such as the Academy stand at New Scientist Live and the Big Bang Fair!

Sir Ralph Robins ScholarshipsIn addition, if your application meets some additional criteria, you could also receive the following enhanced support: • £5,000 towards your university fees• A 10 week or 1 year paid internship at Rolls-Royce plc• An award produced by Rolls-Royce plc and presented at an

annual drinks reception at the Academy, attended by current and previous scholars, organisers and funders of the scholarship

• Your name on an roll of honour plaque in the Rolls-Royce Room at the Academy

Eligibility criteria£5,000 over 3 years

Engineering Leaders ScholarshipsScholarships are available to undergraduates who meet the following criteria:• Undertaking an undergraduate degree at a UK Higher Education

Institution, including those completing degree apprenticeships• The degree must be in an engineering or related discipline• Have completed at least one year (full time equivalent) of your degree, and

have at least two years full time equivalent (including the current year) left until graduation

• Ordinarily resident in the UK and eligible to pay UK home fees

Sir Ralph Robins ScholarshipsIf you wish to be considered for the enhanced Sir Ralph Robins Scholarship you will need have attended a non – fee paying secondary school AND meet one or more of the following criteria:• You have at some point been eligible to receive free school meals• You are from the first generation of your immediate family to attend

university• You have spent time in local authority care

What is a Sir Ralph Robins Scholarship?As part of the Engineering Leaders Scholarships, enhanced scholarships will be made to three eligible individuals to encourage and support students from under-represented backgrounds. The Scholarships will support the next generation of leading engineers, and helping to address the engineering skills shortfall by driving more exceptional, ambitious and diverse students to pursue careers in engineering.To be eligible you will need to answer some additional questions within the application form. We can only consider you for this additional support if you answer these questions.

Who is Sir Ralph Robins?Sir Ralph Robins FREng Hon.FRAeS is one of the UK’s most distinguished industrialists. During his 48-year career at Rolls-Royce plc he held many senior roles, including Managing Director, Deputy Chairman and then Chairman, serving in the latter post for 11 years. Renowned for his foresight – and unwavering belief in investing for the long-term - Sir Ralph was instrumental in committing Rolls-Royce to the ground-breaking Trent engine programme. Trent engines continue to power much of the world’s civil aviation fleet and are one of the UK’s most successful technology exports.

Sir Ralph was born in 1932 and studied at Imperial College. He first joined Rolls-Royce in 1955. Amongst many honours he was knighted in 1988 and elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering the same year. In 1990 he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. During his long career, he has also held senior roles at, amongst others, Cable & Wireless plc, Marshall of Cambridge Holdings Ltd and Schroders plc.

What to expect

Planning for your career development

Each year you will be given an opportunity to develop a Career Personal Development Plan (PDP), taking the time to stop and think about what activities will help you to meet your career goals and to help shape the activities you will use your funding for.

Reporting

An annual report is expected each year, detailing the activities you have undertaken, how you have spent your award and the benefits you have received

£5,000 to spend over three years -What can you use your funding for?

What you can use your funding for is many and varied. Some of the activities that have been funded in the past include:

• Visits to engineering companies • Volunteering on engineering

projects• Attending conferences• Non course related learning to

enhance skills

Training and Mentoring

• An annual training and networking weekend early in the academic year

• Access to advice and mentoring from senior engineers and scheme alumni

All applications must be submitted via the online system, available here: https://grants.raeng.org.uk. All applicants must first register with the system and provide some basic log-in details to create a profile. Select ‘start application’ from the list of available funding programmes.

The application process is in two stages and will require a response from us (Stage one), followed by an invitation to attend a Selection Event (Stage two). Please allow sufficient time to complete your application as you will require a letter from your Higher Education Institution.

All the questions are listed in the next few pages, and inserted into the application form is additional guidance on what to include in your answers.

At any stage in the application process you can save your work, log-off and return to it at a later time.

Higher Education Institution Endorsement – we require a letter to be submitted by your institution to support your application which should confirm:• that you are studying an undergraduate degree at a UK Higher

Education Institution and that you have satisfactory academic standing

• The length of your degree programme and which year of the degree you are currently on (including if you are currently on a placement year)

Personal Reference – as part of your application we also require a personal reference and in what capacity that person knows you (important: your referee should not be a family member)

Assessment of stage 1

Your application will be assessed by Royal Academy of Engineering staff to confirm your eligibility, followed by an assessment by two assessors (usually Royal Academy of Engineering Fellows) who will score your application. Applications will be ranked and reviewed by a panel to determine which applicants to invite to the Selection Event.

Selection Event – stage 2The Selection Event will take place on the 25th March 2019, the event will be held at the Royal Academy of Engineering.

To be eligible for an award you must be able to attend the Selection Event in person.

What to expectThe 70 applicants that best meet the selection criteria at the application stage will be invited to attend the Selection Event at the Royal Academy of Engineering.

It is a day long event with various elements, including an interview of up to 30 minutes. The interview is conducted by two people, usually at least one Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow and either another Fellow, a Sainsbury Management Fellow or an Alumni of the Engineering Leaders Scholarship scheme.

Also, during the event participants will take part in at least one group activity and formal lunch with the selectors and Royal Academy of Engineering staff.

Following the event the Selectors and staff of the Royal Academy of Engineering will come together to decide which applicants will be awarded an Engineering Leaders Scholarship.

Applicants will generally by provided with the outcome within a month of attending the selection event.

Information

Key dates

If you are successful in being invited to the Selection Event you will be notified in late February or early March 2019.

Applicants must be able to attend the Selection Event in person to be considered for an award. The Selection Event will be held in central London on 25th March 2019.
