    system offers unmatched in-service

fac ilities . In ca se of failure (suc h a s

broken c a bles or sho rt circuits) it a llow susers to restore the vehicle to safe

co nditions and provides service sta ff

with the right tools for quick and easy

    diagnostics. With the additional

    possibility of remote (wireless)

    maintained diagnostics, CANbus is

ca pab le of ma king a significa nt

    availability and productivity.

    More and more vehicle manufacturers

a nd a utomotive c ompone nt suppliers

a re realising the b ene fits o f the CANbussys tem. This technology ha s now

reache d a sta ge where internationa lly

a greed sta nda rds exist, so that different

ma nufac turers electronics ca n

    communicate together. A typical

mod ern truck might ha ve se pa ra te

    electronic modules controlling engine,

automatic gea rbox, ABS brakes and

gearbox, need to know the engine RPM

to o pera te c orrec tly. The e ng ine m od ule

will broadcast the engine RPM message

on the CANbus , and a module

connected to the bus can receive the

mes sa g e a nd us e that informa tion. This

means that the engine RP M senso r

need only be connected to one of the

    modules.

The versa tility o f CANbus mo dules is

The Controller Area Network (CAN) was

originally developed by Bosch for use in

the a utomotive indus try, but has

esta blished itself as the s tanda rd b us

system for mobile applications, and is

    defined under ISO 11898. CANbus

sys tems exhibit hig h tra nsfer ra tes up to

    1Mbit/se c a nd high d a ta trans miss ion

reliability. A number of differentcapabilities (CRC, frame checking,

    acknowledgement, bit monitoring and bit

stuffing) enable the CAN protocol to

recognise errors in the transmitted data

(ca used for example b y electroma gne tic

disturba nce s) a nd to co rrec t them. This

correction takes place with very little loss

    of time, making CANbus extremely

    reliable in demanding applications.

A pair of wires forms the transmission

med ium. The leng th of the netwo rk ca n

be up to 40m for the m a ximum 1Mbit/sec

trans miss ion spe ed, b ut networks c an b e

up to 1000m in length without the need

for repeaters and are practical for

    trans miss ion ra tes o f 80Kbit/sec o r les s .

The numb er of nod es on the netwo rk is

unlimited in the ory, but in pra ctice

depends on the type of chip used. Withcommonly used chips, 32, 64 or up to

110 nodes per network are possible (or

128 with res trictions ), whilst further no de s

ca n be acc ommoda ted by using

repea ters o r bridg es.

CAN is a multi-ma ste r sys tem w ith line

topolog y a nd real-time ca pa bility. Unique

    identifiers contain information not

directly related to the address of a

participant, but to the contents of a

    message (such as temperature, rotational

speed or linear speed). All participants

check out the identifier being transmitted

and dec ide if the type of mess ag e is

releva nt to thems elves . In this wa y, all

messa ges ca n be received from many or

a ll of the pa rticipa nts s imultane ous ly. The

    unique identifier also determines the

priority of the mes sa g e rela ting to bus

ac ces s. S hould a number of participantstry to access the bus simultaneously, the

higher priority message is guaranteed to

    ga in bus access.

    Standard format (11-bit identifier) and

extend ed forma t (29-bit ide ntifier) are tw o

different messa ge formats that c an exist

on the sa me p hysica l CANbus. The C AN

2.0 B specification supports both formats,

    while CAN 2.0 A on ly a llow s fra me s with11-bit identifiers .

Throug h co ntent-oriente d ide ntifiers in

the mess ag e, the sys tem achieves a high

    degree of configuration flexibility and

allows a simple extension of the network

to include further d evice s.

High per fo rm anc eNetworks of up to

    40m will support

    transfer rates of

    1Mbit/sec

    Networks up to

In February of 1986, Robert Bosch

introduced the CAN serial bus system at

the SAE congress in Detroit. It was

des igned to handle short mess ag es,

support multi-master access, and offer a

high degree of reliability. In mid 1987,

Intel delivered the first CAN chip, and

toda y more tha n 20 chip ma nufac turers

    produce devices that offer CANinterfaces.

    CAN quickly gained a dominating

pos ition a mong bus protoco ls. In 1999

clos e to 60 million C AN co ntrollers

ma de their wa y into a pplica tions; more

than 100 million CAN devices were sold

    in the year 2000.

A big a dva ntag e o f the C AN buscompared to other network solutions is

the p rice /performa nce ratio. P rice wise,

CAN is the mo st a fforda ble netw ork next

    to a regular serial channel.

With CAN being a pure data link layer

implementa tion, hig her level a pplica tion

layers have been developed to increase

CANs suitability for use in specific

    areas of different applications...

SAE J1939As a real-time CAN solution for heavy

    duty a pplica tions , J 1939 is s uited for

    equipment used in industries ranging

from a g riculture, co nstruction, a nd

fire/res cue to fores try, m a teria ls

    handling, and on- and off-highway.

    Communication systems designed

ac cording to J 1939 standa rds are

EMI/RFI tolera nt, free of co nne c tion

wires , ea sy to insta ll, a nd fea ture log,

    ensure CAN device interoperability.

    CANopenCANopen is a network technology

optimise d for use in industria l controlenvironments , in ma chine internal

networks a nd in embedd ed s ystems

(any control unit deeply embedded in

a de vice with e lec tronics). In indus tria l

co ntrol terms CANopen is a fieldbus .

S ome fieldb us a pplica tions use

    derivations from RS485 for similar

emb edd ed networks. However, with

RS 485 the n etwo rk de signe r/de velope rneed s to invent many c ommunica tion

routines. CANopen, on the other hand,

features a pre-defined set of network

    co mmunication functiona lity.

W hats ahead for C AN ?Although the CAN protocol is now 15

years old, it is still being enhanced. For

example, at the beginning of 2000 an

IS O tas k force involving a number ofco mpa nies defined a protoco l for the

time-trig g ered tra nsm iss ion of C AN

    m e ssa g e s .

formed to e nab le new items o f equipment

to be connected for example allowing

simple d ata trans miss ion b etween new

ma chinery and a tra ctor. Also , d ifferent

    industries are generating their own

spec ifica tions, increas ing the sc ope of

CAN as a universa l interfa ce .

    Brief given

Farmers are under constant pressure to

improve productivity and cut co sts. Hence

every machine has to be more ac curate and

efficient in order to meet ever more stringent

targets, such as minimising size and weight.

One manufacturer needed a display unit to

pick up CANbus signa ls a nd d isplay them to

the operator. It also had to make it easy for

the operator to make adjustments to keep the

vehicle running constantly. Further, the display

unit pac kag e ha d to look uniq ue for the

    customer.

    The soluti on

    The s olution w a s a sta nda rd G raf mod el AT3

CANbus HMI that had all the functions

required for this application. It was supplied

    with freely-programmable software including

graphics and wa s re-pac kag ed in the

    customers own housing.

    Implementation

What was required was to specify the signals

that needed to b e displaye d a nd the control

signals that were need ed by the ope rator in

order to control the trailer. Once this was

    de termined, implementa tion w a s simply a

q uestion of se tting up the unit to displa y w ith

    the appropriate graphical and functional

sc reens. The prog ram w a s s imple to write in

standard Graf C software, and the images

uploa ded in JP EG format.

    Conclusion

With simple modifications to a standard product,

the customer gained a piece of hardware that

wa s uniq ue in its mec hanical style b ut which

provided a ll the functiona lity req uired.

    Brief given

As a g ricultura l machines ha ve de velope d in

ha ve dema nde d more ope rator control. The

la test version of a pota to ha rves ter from

S tand en featured 55 individua l switching

signals, with which the operator can control

30 individual functions. In development, it was

realised that the practical limits of hard-wiring

    had bee n reached.

    The soluti on

S tand ens ma in hydra ulic va lve supplier

a nd proven ES X co ntrol modules from

    S ens or-Tec hnik, w ith s oftwa re w ritten b y the

    sup pliers e lectronic division.

    Implementation

The driver interfa ce co ntrol unit ha s a

membrane fascia, interfaced to the bus with a56-channel input and 32 LED indicator output

mod ule. To a llow the ope rator to view a nd s et

drives between 18 and 24 valves, depending

on the c ustomer s pec ifica tion for the ma chine.

    Optional automatic sensors for machine

levelling, discha rge elevator heig ht, depth

control and axle steering position can be

plugged into the main ESX processor.
