    &awn and 'ohn (leese

)f you think a!out the movie for a while, it*s easy to notice that the whole movie +lot is written

like a +ro-con essay not claimin# it was eismans intention to write it this way

)n the introduction read. !e#innin# of the movie we meet the family (lark, a nice, little, /uiet

family from Ohio consistin# only of a married cou+le in their forties, their son and a dau#hter whicha++ears only at the end of the movie The storyline starts when &enry and Nancy (lark are left

alone, as their son decides to travel to ondon for a year t the same time &enry looses his 2o! and

has an im+ortant 2o! interview in New 3ork for another advertisin# com+any &is wife, Nancy, is

    sufferin# from a so-called 4em+ty nest5 syndrome and doesn6t even know a!out her hus!ands 2o!

loss, so she decides to sur+rise him and #o with him to New 3ork rom that +oint on everythin#

starts to #o wron# and that*s the +art when the 4+ro and contra ar#uments5 start to show 4The

ar#uments5 can !e easy re+laced with the characters +ersonalities in which Nancys stands for +ro

    and &enrys for the o++osite

    Nancy, starred !y %oldie &awn, is a middle-a#ed, #ood lookin# woman and mother &er

+ersonality can !e com+ared to her !ri#ht, !londe hair She is o+timistic, cheerful, full of life,im+ulsive, ready to take risks and everythin# else what you wouldn*t e8+ect from a woman in her

forties or may!e even fifties &er youthful side es+ecially stands out in the scene when she seduces

a rich #uy in the hotel to #et the keys of his room, so that they she and her hus!and can have

somethin# to eat ut at the same time, she is the one who ke+t a cold head durin# the whole

situation as they were mu##ed, and she was the one who took a risk and tried to do somethin# so

that they don6t starve She is also a very #ood and carin# mother what she +roves at the very

!e#innin# when she cried at the air+ort while her son was leavin# and then a#ain in New 3ork when

she su++orted her dau#hter and defended her in front of &enry, des+ite the fact that her actions

    weren6t very commenda!le

    On the other side we have &enry, starred !y Steve $artin &e is everythin# that6s o++osite to

Nancys +ersonality n older lookin# !usinessman tired of life, additionally de+ressed !y the loss of

    his 2o!, 2um+y and always e8+ectin# everythin# #oin# accordin# to +lan &e6s +retendin# to !e

calm the whole time, !ut without his wife he would !e lost henever he tries to solve a +ro!lem he

makes it even worse and falls in some kind of an ar#ument ut it can6t !e said that he only has !ad

sides to his +ersonality &e is also a #ood father and only acts tou#h like every other father that6s

scared for his children would do, and he is an nay !etter hus!and that even after a fi#ht doesen6t

leave his wife alone for more then a few minutes

Those two characters are +erfect to#ether as they com+lement each other and make a really

lovely and funny cou+le ut the movie wouldn6t have the same charm if there wasn6t the character

of $r $ersault, starred !y 'ohn (leese &e is the owner of the hotel, in New 3ork, in which Nancy

and &enry should6ve stayed, !ut didin6t as they didn6t have any money t first he re+resentshimself as a charmin# and smarmy +erson that would do anythin# for his customers, !ut when he

finds out that they don*t have any money, he !ecomes arro#ant and sarcastic ut there is a charm to

him that makes me love this movie &is dancin# to the son# 4ad #irls5 dressed in women clothin#

    is 2ust unfor#etta!le

nd at the end, the yin# and yan# finally come to#ether and everythin# comes to its +lace

&enry reali:es with a little hel+ of dru#s what he has !een missin# and decides to 4suck the

marrow out of life5 &e #ets the 2o!, hires his wife Nancy, they !efriend themselves with $r

$ersault, move into the hotel and finally live a ha++y and 2oyful life, all three of them, the hot wife,
