    Zadatak 3

Read the text and choose the correct answer to the questions below:

HOW TO DEAL WITH PRESSURE FROM PARENTS

    1

Most parents just want what is best for their children. But their ideas of what isbest are usually different from yours. Thats why they start pressuring you. Thenyou get angry and start ghting with them. So the situation gets even worse. Ifyou think you need help, here is some advice for you:

    2

Stay calm even if they repeat something tens of times. If you want your parents

to listen to what you have to say, say it in a reasonable tone. Dont scream, cryor get angry. This shows that you are mature enough to have a discussion, not aght.

3Of course, you must be ready to have this discussion. You need to prepareand then explain your ideas clearly. It is better to nd some true statistical factsbecause most parents believe statistics. This will help you show that you are rightand they are wrong.

4Also try to nd an expert on your father (or mother). Think of family and friendswho know how your parents minds work. It could be your aunts and uncles, grandparents, family friends. Dont forget that your older brothers/sisters havesurvived probably the same pressure so ask them to help you.

    5

No doubt that you already know that lifes not fair. It is not realistic to expectto do what you want all the time. Show your parents that you are willing tocompromise. Try to nd a middle ground something that you can all agreeupon. Parent pressure can make your home a living hell but these hints shouldmake the pressure smaller. Then hopefully you will all meet in the middle. This iswhat we all do in our relationships.

    Adapted from TIME magazine

    1. The purpose of this text is toA. give advice.B. warn your parents.C. dene parent pressure.

    2. Why do parents begin pressuring their children?A. Because they know better.B. To prove they want the best.C. Because your ideas are not the same.

    13/28

    3. Paragraph 2 says that you shouldA. use a calm tone.B. cry if you can.C. show your anger.

    4. Why should you nd some statistical facts?A. Parents listen only to statistics.B. Parents think they are true.C. Parents dont know much about it.

    5. Who can be a helpful expert on your parents?A. family onlyB. family and friendsC. friends only

    6. Why should you ask your brothers/sisters to help you?A. They hate your parents.B. They will nd an expert for you.C. They had the same experience.

    7. All these hints will make the pressureA. easier to survive.B. disappear completely.C. stronger than usual.

JOIN US IN THE NEXT IAYC!!!

    1..........................

Every summer the International Astronomical Youth Camp (IAYC) takes placesomewhere in Europe. About seventy young people from many different countries livetogether for three weeks. The IAYC is different from most astronomical camps becauseof its international character and the fact that you will do your own small researchproject.

    2..........................

You must be between 16 and 24 and able to communicate in English. We use Englishthroughout the entire camp. The aim of this is to discourage people from the samecountry or language group from spending all their time together. Your English need notbe perfect but you should be able to have a normal conversation without a dictionary.

    3..........................

The IAYC day starts with breakfast at 12:00 (noon). After breakfast, the rst workinggroup session takes place. The working group sessions last about two hours, and afterthat there is some free time. You can participate in one of the sports competitions, learnhow to develop photos, build and launch micro-rockets, take a walk with your friends...you choose. After dinner, its NAP time (NAP stands for Non-Astronomical Programme),then a 2-hour evening session. Around midnight we have a light meal and if the sky isclear we observe. Three days are reserved for a special NAP programme, an excursionand a free day.

    4..........................

Most of the astronomical activities in the camp take place in working groups. There

are eight working groups; each one has about 8 participants and one leader whois responsible for the group. Every member of the group works on his or her project, either alone or in groups of 2 or 3. At the end of the camp, everybody will write a smallreport on the project and all these reports are then gathered in a book which will besent to you after the camp. This makes a nice souvenir and a good way to know whateverybody worked on during the camp.

    5..........................

Doing astronomy for three weeks without anything else drives you nuts. Thats whyevery day after dinner, there is an anything-but-astronomy activity with the entire

group: group games, singing evenings, discussions and many more things.

The IAYC 2008 will be in a very pleasant youth hostel called JugendherbergeSayda in a small town in Germany. The house offers plenty of space for all

participants and working groups. The fee for accommodation, full board and thewhole program, including the excursion, will be 550 Euro. A limited number of grantsis also available.

    7..........................

Detailed information about IAYC 2008 will be made available in December 2007. Ifyou want to know more about the IAYC, or if you want to participate in next yearscamp, then email us at [email protected].

You will hear an interview with the musician Robbie Williams. He is talking about hisnew album "Rudebox", his memories and his fame.

SPIEGEL: Mr Williams, several lyrics of your new album "Rudebox" are about the sametheme: Robbie Williams. Are you your greatest fan?WILLIAMS: Well spotted. But everything I do has to do with me. Plus it is nostalgic .

SPIEGEL: You mean because it reminds you of the eighties? A decade that youexperienced as a teenager and that many music critics see as the synonym for badtaste.WILLIAMS: But the one in which I rst developed something like an identity. Idiscovered my love for pop. I was enthusiastic about hip-hop and break dance and

found everything great that somehow sounded electric. And I tie my album to therst memories. Its the rst real Robbie Williams album.

SPIEGEL: You have sold more then 50 million records and lled football stadiumsaround the planet. Why is it so hard for you to deal with critique?WILLIAMS: Because it is never about my work, about my music. The attacks arealways targeted at me personally.

SPIEGEL: What are you jealous about?WILLIAMS: About good songs.

SPIEGEL: The last good song you have heard?

    WILLIAMS: "Angels".

SPIEGEL: Thats your own hit.WILLIAMS: Right. Id rather like to say whom I adore: the U2 singer Bono for example, because it seems he can deal with people very relaxed. But if you insist on ananswer: I envy the people whose life is less complicated than mine.

5SPIEGEL: A complicated life is normal when you are famous.WILLIAMS: I know. You get used to it and still youre shocked every now and then. When I go down to the hotel bar, everyone in the room looks at me. Even if mostpeople try to do it decently, I feel the eyes on me.

SPIEGEL: When was the last time you did not get recognised?WILLIAMS: When I was sitting alone in my room a few minutes ago.

SPIEGEL: Mr Williams, thank you very much for this talk.

You will hear a mother talking about her daughters computer skills.

    COMPUTER PROBLEMS? CALL A 9-YEAR-OLD

My friend Jennifer called last week with a problem. Nobody in her family knewhow to decorate her daughters house in Club Penguin, a popular childrens Internetgame. It was an emergency, and I got the call for help on my answering machine.Jennifers voice said: I know little about computers and you are not good either. So, willyou please send over Sarah? My daughter Sarah? The fth-grader??

I realised that Jennifer is right. Of all of us, Sarah worked with her laptop as easilyas Mozart played the piano.

I found her in her bedroom, composing an e-mail message for her father asking himto buy some new Windows program that she wanted. Can you visit Jennifer tomorrow?

I asked. Let me check, she said, clicking on her Google calendar. O.K., but I have tobe back for a play date at noon.

And that was how my youngest daughter started working as a computer supportspecialist. Its a job that requires strong problem-solving skills and paid an average annualsalary of $44,350. There were 514,460 people who had this job title last year.

The next day, Jennifer paid Sarah $10 for an hours work. Then Sarah went home, found her father trying to understand the new Windows program he had bought. Sheexplained that to quit it, it was rst necessary to shut down all the windows. Or somethinglike that.
