ENGLISH 10CPWIT ACADEMY
Mrs. Kelsey
WHEN I SAY CLASS, YOU SAY YES
CLASS:YES
THE PREFRONTAL CORTEX
• The CEO of the brain.
• Controls planning, working memory, organization, and modulates mood.
• As the prefrontal cortex matures, teenagers can reason better, develop more control over impulses and make judgments better.
• “The area of sober second thought."
…Unfortunately, this is
also the last part of the
brain to fully develop—
sometimes as late as the
age of 25.
COURSE STRUCTURE
• We will use technology when appropriate.
• As part of the 10th Grade WIT Academy team, I will be working with your students’ technology and history teachers on cooperative projects.
COURSE CONTENT
• World literature, including short stories, poetry, The Glass Castle, Macbeth, and Lord of the Flies.
• Research project on a controversial topic.
• Writing, grammar, and vocabulary.
VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR
• My approach to vocabulary focuses on teaching words that students can use immediately to write about and discuss the current reading.
• Correct grammar, mechanics, and usage are essential to good writing; we will practice these skills throughout the year.
EXTRA CREDIT
• I do not give extra credit assignments. Students are expected to complete the assignments I give during the semester in order to earn their grades.
• However, there will be occasions where students can earn bonus points—for example, by turning in an assignment early.
GRADING
•Projects, essays, tests = 60%.
•Homework, class work, and quizzes = 30%.
•Academic Engagement = 10%.
ATTENDANCE
• Ten tardies or six truancies = possible drop-fail from class. Remember that any absence not cleared by a parent within 72 hours becomes a truancy.
• After 18 absences for any reason, a student may be in danger of being dropped from the class.
COMPUTER ISSUES
• Students should back up all important work!
• Computer or printer issues are no excuse for late assignments.
• FedEx on T.O. Blvd. is open from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
• Use computers and printer in our Library.
• Email to a friend with a working printer!
Q/WHS WEBPAGE
• I use Q for grades. I will do my best to enter updates in a timely manner.
• I post assignments, documents, a Daily Update, and other information on my Westlake webpage. PLEASE CHECK HERE FIRST.
WISH LIST
• I have posted a few key “wishes” for our class this year on Post-it notes on my door.
• If you can fulfill one of them, thank you in advance!
