Course Overview: American Literature is a standards-based curriculum designed to promote appreciation and understanding of literature, vocabulary, and writing, grammatical, mechanical, and rhetorical skills.Reading is essential to success in this course. If you do not read at home, you will not succeed. We will be piloting a new textbook in the fall semester, which includes a variety of American literature and will increase your reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. The piloting of this novel is to help the school district make the decision whether or not to adopt this particular textbook, and it is exciting to be a part of this process. Your input will be taken into consideration as we progress throughout the semester.

Course Philosophy: American literature is a class that is designed to connect with your coursework in American history. The class is taught from a socio-historic perspective. There is no way to understand literature properly without going into extensive background about the time periods during which the authors lived, the literature was written, and exploring the culture of American society. We will be exploring various literary themes in a wide variety of texts that will be, for the most part, taught in a chronological nature.Expectations: Students will be expected to engage interactively and critically with texts and each other, analyze and evaluate, relate essential ideas to real world applications, compose relevant and intelligent works of their own, and create industrious, complex projects based on mastery of skills.

Headings and MLA Format: All completed work must have the proper MLA heading and format, or it will not be graded. I will be teaching the MLA format and heading the first week of class.Any typed essays should be printed on 8½” by 11” paper with one-inch margins. The only acceptable font style is 12 point, Times New Roman in black ink. (See MLA guidelines handout).

Please read these guidelines carefully, as they explain what is expected of you in this course. You must save these guidelines in your binder for the entire year.

All signatures and initials must be completed and are worth 10 points if this document, in its entirety, is turned in on . It is worth ZERO points if turned in

Among Autumnal Ghosts: A Living Memoir

It is said that with each passing autumn the memories of

man grow longer as his life grows shorter, and therein lies balance

and understanding. I wonder about that. I am still a young person,

or so they say. Yet the passage of time has become increasingly

Discipline Policy (per JBHS and BUSD regulations):During the school year, you are expected to behave appropriately, arrive on time to class, be ready to learn, and be respectful of teachers, administrators, and other students. The progressive discipline guidelines advance from a warning at the first infraction to parent contact in the fourth infraction and administrative referrals afterward.

Classroom Rules: Respect each other’s ideas, properties, and thoughts. Keep the classroom environment clean, orderly, and safe. Most disciplinary action involves calling parents/guardians; detention; referrals to office; additional assignments; campus beautification, etc. Violate rules of the classroom and you will be dealt with accordingly. Please refrain from inappropriate behavior while in the classroom, and remember – there is no drinking, eating, or chewing gum allowed.

Detention is to be held when assigned. It is to be served without argument and takes priority over social engagements, sports, club activities, after school jobs,

etc. Missing detention is cause for additional disciplinary action. Parents may not excuse you from detention, but must call ahead of time to reschedule.

Burbank Unified School District

John Burroughs High School Academic Honesty Guidelines

Academic Honesty: Students shall not misrepresent examination materials, research materials, classwork, and/or homework assignments as their own, when in fact they are the work of someone else. Copying the work of another student or allowing your work to be copied is academic dishonesty. Copied work form published sources, and/or from the internet (plagiarism) without proper documentation constitutes academic theft.

The classroom teacher in charge is responsible for determining if cheating has occurred.

First Offense: Student will receive a “zero” on the assignment; Teacher will contact parent or guardian and warn them of possible consequences for subsequent offenses. Referral will be sent to an administrative for recording and filing in student’s record.

Second Offense in the same or any other class: If the class is an A.P. or Honors class, student will be transferred to a regular class (with the same teacher if

possible); Student will receive a zero on the assignment; Teacher will contact parent or guardian and warn them of possible consequences of subsequent offenses. Student’s grade may be dropped by one letter grade at the teacher’s discretion. Student will lose privileges, such as lunch pass, dance and game admission. Student will receive a referral to an administrator or counselor. Administrator/Counselor will inform all the student’s teachers that this is the student’s second offense. Student may receive a ‘U’ in citizenship and “cheating” comment for the semester in the class where the second

offense occurred.

Third or Subsequent Offense in the same or any other class: Student will receive a zero on the assignment. Student maybe dropped/failed from the class in which he/she committed the third or subsequent offense or if

student is not dropped/failed, his/her grade will be dropped by one or two letter grades at the teacher’s discretion.

Student may be suspended from school. Administrator will meet with parent or guardian, student, and teacher. Administrator will inform all the student’s teachers that this is the student’s third offense. A notice stating that this student has committed at least three offenses of the Academic Honesty Policy will be in

placed in student’s permanent record. Student will receive a ‘U’ in citizenship and “cheating” comment for the semester in the class where the third

offense occurred. Student, if a senior, will be excluded from participation in senior activities.

~ Special thanks to Crescenta Valley High School and Burbank High School for sharing their Academic Honesty Policies with us.

Tardies/Absences: The JBHS Tardy Policy will be used in this class. You will be marked tardy when not in your assigned seat and ready to work when the beginning bell sounds and class begins.

JBHS Tardy Policy: Warnings are given with the first tardy. Parents will be notified thereafter, and consequences begin with the third tardy. Administrative discipline begins in conjunction the fourth tardy.

Work missed due to tardies, unexcused absences, and suspensions may not be made up .

It is your responsibility to find out what was missed, get your work, and arrange for makeup quizzes/tests/exams within the time allotted.

Students who do not make up work/quizzes/tests/exams within the allotted time will earn ZERO points .

When you are late or absent, you miss assignments, tests and quizzes, and instruction. Therefore, you are automatically creating more work for yourself. Being late or absent does not excuse you from any assignment.

If you are late or absent from class, please talk to another student in your class period before talking to me. Check with the TA’s or in the appropriate place for any hand-outs. Please only discuss make up work with me during the last five minutes of class. I will not take class time to discuss individual issues.

Late and Make-Up Work:

You should never assume I will accept late work, though I may make exceptions from time to time. A good rule of thumb is that if it is LATE, it will be worth zero points. Nonetheless, I encourage you to do all your work, as missing concepts, key ideas, etc., will only make your future lessons more difficult. Therefore, I will not say that LATE WORK is unacceptable. I simply do not promise points for late work. If you do not do your work on time, you run the risk of receiving no points for it, and should therefore assume the worst.Essential Materials/Supplies: Students are expected to be prepared for class at the start of every class period. The following materials are needed for English 11A/B. If there is ANY problem obtaining any of these supplies, please do not hesitate to contact me. There is ALWAYS an alternative solution to purchasing the below items, should this be an issue, and no student will go without, regardless of circumstances.

Grading Policy: A detailed explanation is given below. Everything you do in and out of class is equally important in calculating your final grade for the course. Therefore, class participation and behavior is of the utmost importance. The more you listen, the more you interact, participate, and learn.

A = 100-90% / B = 89 – 80% / C = 79-70% / D = 69-58% / F = 57-0% Note: No + or – scoresare given, and grades will not be rounded up. If you earn an 89.9% you have earned a B. I do not give grades, you earn them, and an 89.9% is still in the B range. If you would like an A, please take advantage every opportunity and pay attention to your progress throughout the semester.

Weighted Categories and Percentages:

First Semester: Classwork (20); Homework (10); Assessments (20); Writing (20);Projects (5%); Commonplace Books (10%); Performance/Participation (5%); Final Exam (10%)

BUSD POLICY:

A student enrolled in the Burbank Unified School District shall not be required to pay a student fee for participation in a class, sports, and educational activities. Additionally, students shall not be required to purchase supplies, materials, equipment, and uniforms as a basis to participate in classes, sports, and educational activities.

I acknowledge and understand the concept of that the point of doing work is to learn.

Initial here:

I acknowledge and accept that learning is the basic precept of our educational system.

Initial here:

I acknowledge that I am a minor who is “forced” to attend high school because this state, this city, my parents/guardians, this school and its staff and faculty value the positive affect an education will have on the rest of my life (may it be long, prosperous, and very, very happy).

Initial here:

I acknowledge that I should consider this school and my day learning my full-time “job” (even though I don’t get paid, which absolutely sucks), and that I therefore should take pride in every single thing I produce, as it represents the best of what I am capable of, what I have learned, and who I am becoming.

Initial here: Lastly, I acknowledge that (and this is crucial—so I truly am paying attention here) grades are never “given,” but earned. Therefore, what percentage, number or letter I receive is an indication of my effort, my progress, and is therefore my responsibility. My

AERIES At Home Website — Checking Grades Online:

Grades are recorded on the online district-wide system: https://athome.burbankusd.org/abiThe At Home Website is for student and parent access to attendance, grades, gradebook, etc. Students and parents are expected to obtain the passcode and sign on instructions from the office and/or website (see URL address above). Peggy Morgan in the counseling office can provide passcode assistance.

I will usually update grades weekly, and expect students and parents to check grades from home. Grades will be posted and updated online as required by the district and state by the deadlines for each quarter. However, the grades will be updated as assignments come in and are graded as quickly as is feasible. I will do my best, but grading is often dictated by student attendance, class curriculum and lessons, holidays, meetings, etc. Please note that it is not likely that I will be able to collect, read, assess, grade, and enter grades for over 150 students every day!
