Soap Suds

This brand of soap has the same smell as once in the big House he visited when he was eight: the walls of the bathroom

openTo reveal a lawn where a great yellow ball rolls back through a

hoopTo rest at the head of a mallet* held in the hands of a child.

And these were the joys of that house: a tower with a telescope; Two great faded globes, one of the earth, one of the stars; A stuffed black dog in the hall; a walled garden with bees; A rabbit warren; a rockery; a vine under glass; the sea.

To which he has now returned. The day of course is fine And a grown-up voice cries Play! The mallet slowly swings, Then crack, a great gong booms from the dog-dark hall and the

ballSkims forward through the hoop and then through the next and

then

Through hoops where no hoops were and each dissolves in turn And the grass has grown head-high and an angry voice cries Play! But the ball is lost and the mallet slipped long since from the hands Under the running tap that are not the hands of a child.

Louis MacNeice, Selected Poems (1964)

* mallet: implement used in an outdoor game where coloured balls are struck through hoops

Criterion A: Understanding and interpretation

5 5 There is a strong sense of overall understanding as well as interesting and independent engagement with poem. Subtleties are grasped and thoughts are extended, all with specific reference to the text. While “reverie” might lose a little power through its repetition, there is quite a strong grasp which is evident.

Criterion B: Appreciation of the writer’s choices

5 5 There is excellent appreciation of detail and features. This works looks specifically at various elements and offers detailed explanation of their effect and significance.

Criterion C: Organization and development

5 5 In spite of a somewhat abrupt conclusion, there is ample evidence of an effectively coherent structure. This work follows the “chronology” of events but does a nice job in stating and developing a clear line of reading.

Criterion D: Language

5 5 The language is very controlled, accurate and effective. The register is highly appropriate for the task.

Criterion A: Understanding and interpretation

5 3 This work can be problematic. The analysis can read like overview and summary too often that can feel like more superficial work at times. Yet, there is a sense of some of the primary points with regard to memory, aging and even death which just come through. This work just reaches 3 for this criterion.

Criterion B: Appreciation of the writer’s choices

5 3 Similarly, there are problems with the appreciation of features. The focus here can feel tacked-on in that there are clearly paragraphs devoted to noting and considering features but not always aligned as part of the primary reading. Also similarly, however, is an appreciation that just reaches adequate. Even if not well-integrated, the volume suggests adequate appreciation.

Criterion C: Organization and development

5 3 Based on the above, one might lean toward a weaker score for organization. Once more, this just meets adequate marks in spite of some problems. The larger argument can lack for effectiveness and coherence but there is an adequate organization and approach to offering the reading.

Criterion D: Language

5 3 The language can be a challenge to physically read with the strike-throughs, etc. but there is evidence of adequate accuracy, some attention to choosing words carefully and an overall sense of fluency. Yet again, some weaknesses but enough to merit adequate marks.

Criterion A: Understanding and interpretation

5 4 There is a strong sense of overall understanding of the poem right from the start of this commentary. The references to the passage are quite specific and detailed. A couple of the foci or ideas argued are viable but not wholly excellent that keeps this from achieving a 5 but there is very good awareness of the poem, meaning and ideas that is evident.

Criterion B: Appreciation of the writer’s choices

5 4 As with above, there are many detailed references and the work rate of close reading is evident. On the whole, then, this is very good work. Once more, there is a lack of some sophistication and precision that would allow this to reach a 5 but certainly very good.

Criterion C: Organization and development

5 4 There is a clear organizing pattern with the response that develops appropriately through the work. Points are explained with an attempt at quite thorough explanation and very good on the whole. There is an almost “breathless” quality to getting down so much information that compromises some precision and prevents a 5.

Criterion D: Language

5 5 The language is very readable, accurate and clearly carefully chosen. Arguably, there is a lack of precision—once more—that might point to a 4 in language but the register is appropriate, the accuracy is strong and even something of the candidate’s authentic voice comes across. Even with some flaws, merits a 5 here.

Criterion A: Understanding and interpretation

5 1 The very limited work actually does indicate some awareness and sense of the poem on the whole. Arguably, even this short sentence captures the essence of the work but, obviously, there is little work shown. Some may be inclined to award a 0 simply for the lack but even the one sentence does demonstrate that the candidate has read and understood the work.

Criterion B: Appreciation of the writer’s choices

5 0 Despite listing a couple of devices that may well be utilized in the poem, there is no analysis demonstrated and this cannot achieve an award of 1.

Criterion C: Organization and development

5 0 There is no structure or developed line of argument.

Criterion D: Language

5 3 This is likely the most contested criterion. There are two sentences only so the argument may be to award lower. However, based on what is on paper, there is a sense of some accuracy with the language and it is clearly considered. In this case, we are rewarding the quality even if the quantity of the sample remains small.
