The BAUER Resources Group…

BAUER Resources GmbH is the holding company for a group of com-panies operating in the fields of water, the environment, energy and mineralresources. Bauer Resources is thethird and most recently establishedsegment within the BAUER Group, after the Construction and Equipmentsegments.

Water-related operations comprisethe treatment of drinking water aswell as process and industrial wastewater. Further activities include theexploration, extraction and distribu-tion of drinking and service water.

In the energy business area, BauerResources is involved in the explo-ration, extraction and distribution ofgeothermal resources, as well as ex-ploration and production drilling for the oil and gas industry.

The company's mineral resourcesoperations primarily focus on the exploration of various newly locateddeposits. Mainly deploying equipmentmanufactured by the BAUER Maschi-nen Group, Bauer Resources is com-missioned by mining companies toexplore, unlock and, in some cases, extract mineral deposits.

Environment is the keyword for pollution remediation, soil decontami-nation and groundwater purification.

In all the areas in which it operates,Bauer Resources is able to call upon the extensive experience of its individual member companies.Engineering consultants HGC Hydro-Geo-Consult specialize in hydrology, geology and geothermal energy.

The companies of BAUER ResourcesGmbH act as independent marketplayers and are organised into threeoperating divisions.

Materials Division

The core business units of the MaterialsDivision are the member companies ofthe German Water and Energy (GWE)Group based in Peine. GWE serves as the strategic unit to bundle the competences of the different subsidi-aries under one umbrella. These sub-sidiaries have decades of experiencein Germany and abroad in the areas of well engineering technology, pumptechnology and geothermal energy.

Exploration & Mining Services Division

Since the 1990s, specialist founda-tion engineering equipment – grabs, cutters and drilling rigs – have beendeployed in prospecting for alluvialgemstones. In Canada and Namibia, grabs and cutters have been used to dry out open-cast mines so as tofacilitate the extraction of diamonds.

Through its subsidiary Bauer Tech-nologies South Africa, its holdings inMineral Bulk Sampling South Africaand Mineral Bulk Sampling Namibia, and the new Bauer Resources Ghana, founded in 2011, the BAUERResources Group has gained a firmfoothold in the African raw materialsmarket. The introduction of Praklauniversal drilling rigs has allowed anexpansion of business into deep-levelexploration drilling in kimberlites,large-calibre cable-tool drilling alongwith well and level drilling.

2006 saw the foundation of subsidi-ary Bauer Resources Canada. Bauer Resources Australia carries out large-calibre exploration drilling for dia-monds, iron ore and manganese.

With Swiss company Foralith, BauerResources boasts a specialist in direc-

tional exploration and productiondrilling.

After acquiring a majority interest inthe Jordanian company Site Group,Bauer Resources now has access todeep drilling rigs in the Middle Eastfor oil, gas and geothermal applica-tions and for sinking deep wells.

HAGULITUnder the brand name HAGULIT, endproducts made of untreated steel aremanufactured by the whirl sinteringmethod and pre-treated with an epoxyresin coating. This patented technique, developed by and globally exclusive toSBF-Hagusta, enables untreated steelproducts of up to 5 metres in lengthand 800 mm diameter to be coated. Its advantages over stainless steel areits absolute proofing against chemicalcorrosion and its lower cost. HAGULITis extremely impact-resistant, and per-mits no undermining of corrosion andconsequently no flaking of the coatingas in the case of conventional corro-sion protection.

FiberglassThe GWE product range of glass fiber-reinforced polymer pipes (GFRP) andall accessories offers a complete cor-rosion-resistant piping system for bothhorizontal piping (line pipes) and aswell completion material for verticalapplications (down hole tubings &casings) that has proved its mettleover many years under extreme conditions. The primary applicationsof these products are the extraction, distribution and injection of oils andgases, deeper and intermediate-depth

to meet nearly any customer require-ment.

The following basic materials are em-ployed in well completion, dependingon the requirements and operationconditions encountered:

SteelUntreated steel – also known as blackor carbon steel – offers high strengthand is attractively priced. Due to itscorrosivity, carbon steel products canonly be used on a temporary basis inwater wells. Untreated steel is stillused in Western Europe primarily forgroundwater lowering and waterdrainage. Lowering screens and ex-tension pipes made of untreated steelare multiply reusable, as opposed tolower-cost PVC screens, and so re-main in use.

Stainless steelStainless steel meets the highest quality demands in terms of hygiene, stability, durability and hydraulic prop-erties. With wire wrapped screens, virtually any wall width can be pro-duced – including variably on a singlecasing up to 6 metres. Commonlyused diameters range from 25 mm to 800 mm. If appropriate supportrods are used, installation depths ofup to 3,000 metres can be attained. The product portfolio is completed by monobloc casings, well heads, shaft covers and mouldings. Ready-to-install pre-assembled shaft struc-tures in concrete or stainless steel arealso produced by GWE.

PVCPVC casings, screens and extensionpipes are the most common products today in the private sector and, insome cases, also in communal andindustrial water supply schemes. Inwell construction, these products aremanufactured according to DIN 4925standard in a variety of diameters andwall thicknesses. Depending on theseparameters, PVC products can be de-ployed at depths down to 350 me-tres, enabling their major benefit ofchemical resistance to aggressive wa-ters to be utilized even in deeperwells.

Well completion materials aremarketed under the brand

names GWE pumpenboese and SBF-Hagusta. They are top-qualitywell construction products.

Well completion equipment is manu-factured primarily at the Materials Division's own production facilities, to a substantial manufacturing depth.Production is based on applicable industry standards, supplemented by the guidelines and recommen-dations of the relevant quality controlorganizations.

An extensive range of screens, ex-tension pipes, riser pipes, pumps andwell heads is available, in a variety ofmaterials, dimensions and with differ-ent joining techniques. This enables us

W ith the introduction of mobilehydraulically powered explo-

ration and well drilling rigs at the endof the 1950s, the subject of flushingtechniques when drilling took on in-creasing importance. Whereas flush-ing was originally carried out usingwater, initial experimentation led tothe use of clay/water suspensions. The controlled deployment of flushingagents in water-based drilling flushingenabled the continually rising de-mands to be met as drilling went everdeeper and became increasinglylarge-scale and efficient.

The rapid sinking of uncased flushingholes for wells, quality measurementpoints, geothermal energy systems, seismic explosive drilling or core holedrilling for ground surveying purposesare today state-of-the-art based onthe use of modern flushing products.

As a leading manufacturer and sup-plier of well engineering materials,GWE pumpenboese offers a completerange of bentonites, polymer protec-tive colloids, filling materials andchemicals for the production of state-of-the-art flushing systems, and isable to call upon a wealth of experi-ence with applications engineeringwhich has been widely tried andtested in the field. Choosing the rightflushing technique is vital to the effi-ciency and cost-effectiveness of adrilling operation.

The portfolio is supplemented by expandable grout. GWE's specialistsdevelop and produce grout with increased thermal conductivity for professional injection of geothermalenergy probes.

16

Exploration drilling operations canbe traced back to a number of

different origins within the BAUERGroup. BAUER Maschinen GmbH'sinvolvement started when large-scaleboreholes were first used for explo-ration – and in some cases for mining– and other specialist foundation engineering techniques, such as cut-ter-excavated diaphragm walls, beganto be deployed. As far back as theearly 1990s, a Bauer trench cutterwas mounted on a ship to help extractsamples for diamond prospectingfrom the sea bed off the coast ofSouth Africa.

A tradition in exploration is evidencedby the various operations undertakenby the GWE Group and by PraklaBohrtechnik based in Peine. Praklawell drilling rigs are successfully de-ployed in extensive exploration drillingoperations, both in conventional wellengineering and also, for example, inprospecting for diamonds.

Other references for the Exploration &Mining Division relate to explorationdrilling operations in southern andwestern Africa, in Canada and Aus-tralia. This involved sinking large, 2.5-metre-diameter boreholes downto a maximum depth of 30 metres and more slender holes to depths ofup to 120 metres.

Competence in oil and gas applica-tions is reflected in the drilling of "topholes", the uppermost casing string indeep wells. Such deep-level drilling issubject to the stringent HSE regula-tions of the oil industry. Deep-level exploration wells has already beendrilled for major mining companiesusing cable-tool drilling.

Specialist and directional drilling

Our Swiss company Foralith AG,based in St. Gallen, has been

setting the benchmark in deep-levelexploration drilling since 1988.

With its combination of tried and test-ed drilling methods and techniques inthe mining, oil and gas fields, Foralithhas become synonymous with deep-level drilling projects of all kinds, pro-viding a full range of services fromconsulting and planning through toexecution.

Foralith is able to provide top-classreferences, including large-scaleprojects carried out on behalf ofNAGRA and in connection with theNEAT, as well as deep-level tunnelprojects such as the Alpine tunnel, the Gotthard tunnel, the Brennerbase tunnel and the Koralm tunnel. The range of services extends fromcable core bores to rotary drilling, and from special bores to directionaldrilling. The wide range of methodsavailable and the state-of-the-artequipment portfolio ensures that the right technology is deployed on every job. Deep-level drilling iscost-intensive.

Projects become even more expensiveif they have to be stopped with nooutcome or restarted. Consequently, engineers and geologists, site man-agers and developers need a partnercapable of documenting the rock intop core quality. Foralith's drillingtechnology is tailored specially to thecomplex Alpine geology, and has been

tried and tested in thousands of metres of drilling operations.

Current Foralith projects include deepcable-tool exploration drilling to 1,000metres for shale gas exploration inSweden and surveying of the tunnelaxis for the construction of the Bren-ner base tunnel.

smaller crew. These drilling rigs are developed and constructed by theBAUER Maschinen Group.

High temperatures, gaseous contentsand organic impurities from the drillingsuspension require the treatment ofany water produced during pump test-ing and the monitoring of the specifieddischarge limits. This work is per-formed by BAUER Umwelt GmbH, an-other subsidiary of BAUER ResourcesGmbH.

BAUER Resources GmbH offersdeep-level drilling services for oil

and gas exploration that embrace bothvertical and extended-reach drilling solutions. The regional companies aresupported by BAUER Drilling ServicesGmbH in Schrobenhausen. The aim isto offer the customer complete solu-tions; anchor drilling, stand pipe drillingand drilling site construction are there-fore also offered in addition to deep-level drilling.

The Jordanian subsidiary Site Groupuses its own deep-level drilling rigs toconduct exploration drilling for petro-leum and natural gas, as well as to sinkextremely deep wells. Foralith pos-sesses the competence for directionaldrilling.

New markets, such as the explorationof unconventional hydrocarbon de-posits, offer immense opportunities for Bauer Resources. The company recently drilled several oil shale explo-ration wells in the Middle East. Shalegas, also an abundant resource inGermany, is likewise gaining impor-tance in light of rising energy costs.

As an engineering company, FORALITHDrilling Support AG provides servicesworldwide, including consultancy, planning and monitoring of explorationand production wells. Detailed andprofessional planning gives the cus-

tomer the greatest possible assuranceof a cost-optimized and successfuldrilling project. Particularly with deep-level drilling, it is essential for experience of deep-level drilling to be incorporated during the feasibilityand pre-project phase so that initialbudget planning can also be consid-ered carefully.

Bauer Drilling Services has recentlyconstructed drilling sites including thestand pipe well as a turn-key serviceextremely cost-effectively. Specificdeep-level drilling aspects, such ascompliance with drilling site construc-tion guidelines, going through the mining approval process and construc-tion considerations such as machinefoundations or cableways, were han-dled optimally thanks to the company'swealth of experience of deep-leveldrilling engineering.

Sinking the several hundred metresdeep anchor casing string with asmaller drilling rig offers both technicaland cost advantages. The former aredue to the possibility of controlled pen-etration despite any flushing losses asa result of airlift drilling and on the lat-ter due to significantly lower daily rateswhen using smaller drilling rigs with a

The Exploration & Mining ServicesDivision of Bauer Resources has

its origins in the wide-ranging busi-ness operations of BAUER MaschinenGmbH. The machinery originally de-signed for specialist foundation engi-neering applications has, since thelate 1980s, also been deployed onspecial applications in the open-castmining field.

Starting in the year 2000, BAUERMaschinen GmbH has supplied largequantities of equipment for the Diavik I and II open-cast diamond miningprojects in northern Canada. The dia-mond-rich kimberlites lay below thewaters of the Lac de Gras and theirextraction first necessitated the con-struction of a dike and cut-off wall en-closure. Open-cast mining could onlycommence after the water had beenpumped away.

In Canada, South Africa and Namibia, operating companies have been es-tablished together with local partners. As a result, Bauer has become a full-service provider in the mining industry. This form of operation is also beingpractised in Namibia through the sub-sidiary MBS-Namibia. On the Atlanticcoast, a cut-off wall is being con-structed to enable the diamonds to be open-cast mined.

Raw materials are becoming lessplentiful; extraction costs are

rising. The mining industry has rec-ognized that specialist foundation engineering techniques open up thepossibility to carry out explorationsand to exploit even small depositscost-effectively. All the various tech-niques can be deployed, including rotary drilling rigs, grabs and cutters.

It was back in the mid-1990s thatlarge-calibre diamond explorationdrilling was carried out for the firsttime using specialist foundation engi-neering equipment. Since then, Bauerrotary drilling rigs have been deployedto execute exploration drilling down todepths of 100 metres, in 2.50 metrediameter, based on the standard kellymethod. This technique is applicablenot only in southern Africa and inNamibia, but also in exploring iron oredeposits in Australia. The sound expe-rience gathered has resulted in this

technology being developed furtherfor diamond exploration in Canada. Here, two Bauer BG 36 rigs havebeen used to sink 1.20-metre-diame-ter exploration boreholes in the kim-berlite down to a depth of 360 metres.

The deployment of specialist founda-tion engineering techniques in miningenables even small yet high-yield coaldeposits to be mined in a cost-effec-tive way. Based on Bauer's extensiveexperience in machinery manufactureand in the deployment of specialistfoundation engineering techniques,

specifically tailored mining methodscan be developed.

HGC Hydro-Geo-Consult

In HGC Hydro-Geo-Consult GmbH,based in the mining town of Freiberg

in Saxony, Bauer Resources has at itsdisposal a consulting engineers' officecapable of handling any matters relat-ing to applied geology. Having beenconcerned back in the early 1990swith damage assessment and environ-mental impact studies relating to con-taminated industrial sites, today themain area of activity is in remediationprojects and in the area of environ-mental monitoring.

HGC's work is based on three pillars:the "Geology, Hydrogeology, InheritedPollution, Planning" section focuseson studies, expert opinions and plan-ning services. It tests groundwaterquality for local authorities, public-sector inter-authority project consortiaand mining companies, or analysesmineral springs. HGC carries out im-portant preliminary work to safeguardsites blighted by past industrial use, to revitalise unused land or to effectrenaturing.

The "Environmental Information Sys-tems" section (UIS) encompasses geographical information systems(GIS), databases, 2D and 3D model-ling, land and land use registers, digitalmapping and software development.

Finally, HGC carries out basic prelimi-nary work for close-to-the-surface geothermal energy projects, the suc-cess of which depends heavily on precise knowledge of the geological/hydrogeological subgrade and on

determining energy output rates fromwhich the efficiency of the plant instal-lations can be derived. Alongside fea-sibility studies, approval procedures,

planning services and modelling forlong-term validation and quality assur-ance purposes, HGC also offers theThermal Response Test.

Pollution remediation activitiesbegan in the late 80s, with the ac-

tive clearing of industrial residues at former industrial sites. Operationsfocused primarily on soil, soil vapourand groundwater remediation. Withtime the importance of land recyclingbecame increasingly clear. BauerUmwelt works here with customers todevelop tailored complete solutions, with everything managed by a singlesource.

Since its founding in 1990, BauerUmwelt has remediated numeroussites, clearing inherited pollution by avariety of different methods. The busi-ness was gradually expanded, basedon innovations in the field of in situtechnologies and the ongoing devel-opment of specialist foundation engi-neering techniques for environmentalapplications. The field has sincegrown including not just "classic" re-mediation projects, but also land recy-cling, in which contaminated sites areconverted for new usage.

The broad range of advanced re-mediation and securing techniques, such as replacement bores, selectivedemolition, construction of landfillsites, encapsulation, reactive walls, funnel and gate systems, in situ injections, immobilization and mixed-in-place provide a solid foundation for finding the optimum remediationmethod for each site.

An experienced interdisciplinary teamof engineers, scientists and techni-cians, in collaboration with the on-siteteam, employing the company's ownequipment, ensures a high degree offlexibility, outstanding quality of adviceand reliable execution even on large-scale projects.

Remediation work generally re-quires contaminated material

to be removed, particularly if the aimis to use the site again immediately.Construction waste from industrialdemolitions, drilling muds and riversediments are often con-taminatedwith pollutants and require disposal.

These diversely contaminated materi-als have been repeatedly posing newchallenges to environmental engineer-ing for years. Bauer Umwelt helps tosolve such problems in a wide varietyof ways – providing advice, conceptdesign, logistics, treatment, disposaland recycling as part of its everydaytasks. Bauer Umwelt has its own soilremediation centres, waste treatmentplants and approved intermediatestorage sites in Bavaria, Thuringia,Saxony and Hamburg, in which ma-

T he remediation of contaminatedgroundwater, construction and

tunnel water as well as leachate gen-erally involves long-term projectsusing advanced methods.

Groundwater remediation plants suchas pump & treat systems often beginwith the extraction of the groundwaterand use in situ phase separation fol-lowed by multistage plants comprisingdesorption, precipitation/flocculationand adsorption units depending onthe type and concentration of the pol-lutants. Following expert consultationand tailor-made design, the plants aredelivered, erected and commissionedby Bauer Umwelt.

An extensive fleet of rental equip-mentguarantees the flexible, fast and cost-effective supply of standard compo-nents. Automatic operations monitor-ing systems increase plant safety, reli-ability and availability.

Plants are designed either as modularor tailored solutions as desired by thecustomer. Container modules, whichare quick and easy to transport andinstall, are ideal as flexible short-termsolutions.

Bauer Umwelt offers primarily completesolutions and in situ methods usingconstruction measures, including funneland gate systems, reactive walls andspecial injections.

P rocess water needed for the oper-ation of industrial plants and for

the production of products must meetquality criteria that vary as a functionof the industry and use. Low electricalconductivity, zero oxygen content andsoftness are some characteristics ofprocess water. As the process wateris usually obtained from groundwateror public water sources, it must betreated appropriately before being fedinto boilers, used for cooling or turnedinto ultra-pure water used in the man-ufacture of products.

The wide variety of processes em-ployed in the various industrial fieldsmeans that different types of wastewater, with specific pollutant contents, are produced. Usually this water hasto be pre-treated before being allowedto enter public sewage treatmentplants, or it is definitively treated be-fore being routed into an outfall. Ide-ally, waste water can be recycled andreturned to the production operation. The recovery of raw materials from the

waste water is also possible in specificcases.

Bauer Water can rely on a broadrange of chemico-physical, biologicalmembrane and sterilisation methodsto accommodate customer wisheswith individual and tailored solutions.

Bauer Water offers its industrial cus-tomers a package which encom-passes consulting, engineering and

in-house plant engineering to opera-tion, service and financing. The com-pany is active internationally and canutilise the parent company's world-wide network for support. With majorefforts and financial resources com-mitted to research and development, the company is continually coming upwith new innovations.

Produced water refers to waterproduced in the oil and gas indus-

try in the course of extraction opera-tions. It contains impurities from hy-drocarbons and mineral substances,as well as heavy metals in somecases, which occur in oil and gasreservoirs. Produced water is both anindustrial waste and a raw materialthat must be treated and purified priorto disposal or re-use. Bauer Water hasset itself the goal of becoming a lead-ing vendor in this market of treatmentand purification solutions which areadvanced in design, fit for the future, sustainable and economical. Filtration, centrifugation, flotation and biologicalprocesses are the technologies it isemploying for this purpose. As a part-ner to the oil and gas industry, thecompany offers a range of packagesincluding complete DBOOT (Design,Build, Operate, Own and Transfer) so-lutions. The construction and opera-tion of the world's largest biologicalproduced water treatment plant in theSultanate of Oman underscores thecompetence in this field.

Produced water

The Nimr Water Treatment Plant treats a volumetric flow of 95,000 m3/d producedwater per day.

A production well extracts up to nineunits of water per unit of oil.

The sophisticated deployment of allavailable technologies enables sub-stantial oil content to be extractedfrom the produced water and recov-ered on behalf of our customers. Moreover, the overall process is de-signed to further conserve valuable resources by saving energy.
