This course looks at encountering difference through the lens of medieval liter-

ature.

What happens when worlds collide? While it’s true that empires rose and fell

in the Middle Ages, for the most part textual and cartographic evidence reveals

a world far more intermixed and multilingual than may be imagined. People

often peacefully negotiated difference along trade routes and other sites of en-

counter; lived in intercultural and interfaith communities; and/or traveled for

political, scholarly, and geographical knowledge. Nonetheless, readers of west-

ern European literature encounter strange figures: demonized Saracens and non

-Christian others, hybrid creatures, and monstrous, supernatural women.

Our course is also intentionally hybrid! Writing projects throughout the semes-

ter focus on integrating research meaningfully into creative writing as well as

literary and historical analyses (I.e.: the course has been designed to support

projects in literary criticism and creative writing.)

Linguistics, as a discipline, is the scientific study of human language. This

course will cover the core of linguistic study: phonetics and phonology (sounds

and sound systems), morphology (word shapes), syntax (sentence structure),

semantics (the meanings of linguistic forms), and pragmatics (meaning in

context). We'll also look at a wide variety of other topics including

sociolinguistics (language and identity), language contact, change, death, and

revitalization; and writing systems. This challenging but fascinating topic area

will prove relevant not only to students of English and education but also to

those majoring in foreign languages, philosophy, psychology, or computer

science.

The English/Comm 386 course is an upper-level course in the English/

Communication Department sequence of upper-division courses at CSB/SJU.

It is also a liberal arts course. As a 300-level course, it seeks to build on

foundational skills you have encountered (such as effective critical thinking,

reading, writing, and oral communication skills in Core and Humanities) so

that you can pursue upper-division academic work (in this case, a

specific exploration of one facet of film studies) competently, efficiently, and

even in leadership roles. There are no prerequisites.

As a liberal arts course, English/Comm 386 deals with contemporary social

values in culture (personal identity, film viewing habits, gender positions, class

positions, narrative representations), and how those social values shape,

determine, regulate our individual responses to everyday life. In other words,

this liberal arts story is your story.

The course surveys the American literary approach to nature and environment,

with particular attention to questions of power and privilege. Some of this liter-

ature is about how people have depicted nature as a utilitarian space—what has

been done with vast forests, minerals, or rivers, particularly in terms of energy

creation and the ramifications of these usage decisions? How has that affected

various cultures and indigenous people, as well as natural plant and animal

communities? The styles and traditions of American environmental writing

have changed dramatically over time and we will examine the work of nature

writers from cities as well as rural spaces, and lots of writers of color. We will

read, think, discuss, and write critically about a wide range of environmental

writers from various genres. We will gain an appreciation for and become fa-

miliar with many of the most influential writers and texts in the field as well as

some of the most innovative new writers.

This course will introduce students to Indian culture and society through a study of

popular Indian cinema. The Indian film industry is the largest in the world and

wields tremendous power as an economic and cultural force in the country.

Focusing primarily on the “Bollywood” film industry based in Mumbai, we will

examine how commercial cinema has influenced cultural attitudes and social

change in India. The course will highlight how Bollywood films have addressed

contentious topics like national identity, gender injustice, and globalization in

contemporary India.

The course consists of two parts: The first part, taught over a CD Mod in fall 2019,

will introduce students to Bollywood cinema and its impact on Indian society.

Following that, students will travel to India for two weeks (Dec. 27-Jan. 9) to

experience firsthand the complex mechanisms that fuel this industry. In Mumbai,

students will have the opportunity to observe the production and marketing aspects

of Bollywood films, visit a studio, meet with people who work in the industry, and

attend lectures/workshops given by experts in the field. In Kolkata, students will

learn about the “parallel” cinema movement in India and, in collaboration with

students of St. Xavier’s College, will investigate the impact of Bollywood on the

everyday lives of people in India. The trip will wind down with a visit to one of

India’s greatest cultural treasures, the Taj Mahal of Agra.

ENGL 383: Post–Colonial Literature (HM) (IC) (4)

A study of literature, partly in translation, from African, Asian and the Caribbean countries. The course examines the specific historical and cultural contexts in which these literatures arise.

“[T]he accession to independence of the colonial countries places an important

question before the world.... The fundamental duel which seemed to be that

between colonialism and anti-colonialism, and indeed between capitalism and

socialism, is already losing some of its importance. What counts today, the

question which is looming on the horizon, is the need for a redistribution of

wealth. Humanity must reply to this question, or be shaken to pieces by it.”

--Frantz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth

Fanon's comment serves as a point of entry for this course. Gesturing towards

a “postcolonial” world, Fanon identifies the need for a global, not national,

resolution for the problem of unequal distribution of wealth which European

imperialism had created. It’s an urgent matter for all humanity, he warns.

Today, when we confront the devastating consequences of global inequalities,

Fanon’s warning rings as true as it did in the 1950s when formal or territorial

colonization was coming to an end and the “Third World” was emerging.

Fanon’s way of seeing the world—not as discrete units of nations and cultures,

but as people and communities located unequally in the global networks of

commerce and power—is a foundational concept in postcolonial studies.

Postcolonial studies is a dynamic and multidisciplinary field that has given rise

to some of today’s most innovative and influential theories of cultural

production. This class is intended to serve as a general introduction to

postcolonial literature and theory. Toward that end, we will read some great

novels by postcolonial authors, grapple with some thought-provoking theory,

and watch some stirring films. We will pay special attention to the imperatives

of globalization and how they are shaping the future of postcolonial studies.

plays? This course explores comparative modern women's literatures from the

Americas and Europe. In imaginative (and often nearly autobiographical)

With literary publishing in rapid flux, book publishers knit their brows and try

to forecast demand for printed books and e-books. Every prediction prompts a

new round of hand-wringing about the future of the book. The shift from print

to electronic formats has had—and continues to have—enormous

consequences for the publishing industry. Claims that this shift spells the death

of books, however, demand careful examination. In English 315, we’ll explore

the rapidly changing book-publishing industry, looking closely at the ways in

which industry developments and new technologies affect writers, readers, and

publishing companies. We’ll begin by studying the traditional book-publishing

model, and then we’ll study the effects of digital technologies on the

transmission of writers’ works to audiences of readers. By the end of the

semester, we may not arrive at certain answers about the future of literary

publishing, but we’ll understand many of the forces that will shape that future.

Heroes are easy to find in REALLY good books, right? However, have you

ever wondered what makes those heroes “heroic”? What makes heroic

characters relatable and unreachable at the same time? Can villains be heroic?

Can heroes be bad? Throughout your semester-long literary expedition, we’ll

look at MANY types of heroic characters—some characters you might like

and some you won’t; some you can relate to and some you can’t.

We’ll begin our expedition by creating a literary guide and a literary roadmap

in order to figure out how to effectively identify heroic characters. As we

navigate through myriad literary worlds, the following is a list of “heroes”

we’ll likely bump into (not in any particular order): Gilgamesh, Lisbeth

Salander, Guinevere, Esther, Aragorn, Odysseus, Aeneas, Laura Ingalls,

Beowulf, Harry Potter, Natty Bumppo/Hawkeye, Wife of Bath, Dracula,

Sherlock Holmes, Lucy Pevensie, Achilles, Katniss Everdeen. Who knows,

you might even encounter an Ironman or a Black Widow or a Rick Grimes or

an Aladdin or a Xena along the way. Join us as we travel vast literary worlds

in search of the sometimes elusive but always interesting literary hero.

Imagine asking your smart-device to continue reading Isaac Asimov's book

"I, Robot." Imagine attending a history lecture on the Black Death of

medieval Europe. Imagine listening to a speaker on catastrophic climate

change and its impact on humans in North America. Imagine having a

discussion with a psychology professor or colleague about changing gender

roles and expectations. Imagine watching an anti-gravity football game with

your teammates. The common link between these “imaginings” is this:

Fiction helps discuss science AND science helps inform fiction. In this

introduction to reading fiction course, students will have the opportunity to

explore intersections between worlds of fiction and worlds of science by

reading and discussing works by authors, thinkers, and scholars such as

Leonardo DaVinci, Charles Darwin, George Orwell, HG Wells, Stephen

Hawking, Sun Tzu, Sigmund Freud, Marie Curie, Margaret Atwood, Philip

K. Dick, Isaac Asimov (and others). Students will have opportunities to seek

out places where new life might emerge, to explore strange new (and old)

worlds, and to go boldly where they may not have gone before in their

reading and collegiate experience.

Welcome to Film Heaven: An Introduction to Active Spectatorship. In film

heaven, we will go beyond the level of ―two thumbs up and will work toward

a more theoretical and historical understanding of Hollywood film and film

history. Students will gain an understanding of the history of film in the U.S.

and abroad, and we will look at aesthetic and technical aspects of filmmaking.

Students will also become familiar with film terminology. 2G2BT.

We will watch many cinema masterworks in the course of the semester, and

there will be a lab scheduled for this purpose. We will also read film theory,

reviews, and other texts to broaden our understanding of the medium and its

genres. Attendance at film lab is mandatory.

Students will do presentations, writing, and will be expected to participate

actively in our discussions. They will also be expected to keep up with

readings and screenings. There may be a nominal cost for photocopied

materials.

Prerequisites: Completion of FYS and junior standing

Simply stated, the goal in Writing Essays is to write well, to place one word

after another in a unique and careful way so that not only will the reader

understand the message conveyed in a given essay, but they might understand

something of the messenger as well. How is this done?

It is not an easy task or one that is undertaken lightly. There are many aspects a

writer must consider and some of these will be explored during the semester.

Word choice will be discussed and examined since, like fingerprints, each

word leaves an individual imprint along an essay’s path. Style, the

unmistakable scent of a writer, will be developed too since it is often the case

that how an essayist writes is every bit as important as what an essayist writes.

Focus, consistency, authority and self-discovery all must be factored into the

equation, too. Indeed, it is the process of self-discovery or self-exploration that

can be at once the most maddening and most rewarding aspect of the essay

writing experience.

The class format will be a blend of reading and discussion of our texts, brief

writing exercises, peer workshops, in class readings and conferences with the

instructor. Our readings will provide examples of some of the finer essayists of

our time and will serve as guides for what a truly great essay can do. But the

primary concern of the class will be on the creation and refinement of our own

work so that, by the semester’s end, each student will be able to trace back,

word by word, their own unique and carefully crafted written landscape.

One definition of the word provoke is "to stir up intentionally." In this class,

we will examine literature that provokes readers. The literature we will

encounter will provoke us in a variety of ways: from asking us to examine race

and gender roles, to asking us to question some firmly and commonly held

beliefs; from asking us to enter into a poem that we might not understand, to

demanding that we jump into a narrative that will not let us go. The purpose of

this class is to get stirred up by literature, to find ourselves breathless, angry,

thrilled, confused, all within the confines of a page, so that we may, as Rumi

suggests, begin to grow.

ENGL 122E: Atlas of a Difficult World

I borrowed the title of this literature course from a long poem by Adrienne

Rich, in which she asks whether poetry can help us find our way through

the dangers that mark the world of the twenty-first century. Rich and many

other writers have asked what value imaginative literature has in "a difficult

world." Does it create a bridge to cross the abyss between the personal and

the public, the aesthetic and the political, the I and the we? Should

literature be such a bridge, or is this a misunderstanding and misuse of art?

To address these questions, we will read the works of poets, fiction writers,

memoirists, and theorists. You will add your voices to this conversation by

doing many kinds of writing-a poetry anthology, a personal essay, and a

critical/analytical essay. I will also give frequent short written assignments

which will become the spring—boards into each day's discussion. I hope we

will often find ourselves out beyond the known world, needing an atlas or at

least a GPS. There will be a written mid- term exam and an oral final exam.

I will ask you to present some of your work to the class, memorize and

recite a poem, raise questions, bring your experience of the world to bear on

what we read, help each other improve as writers, and actively engaged in

all course activities.

English 206 is a year-long, creative-writing course for pre-health science

majors, which offers a sustained, clinical experience. Students learn to guide

patients through creative-writing exercises, at local clinics, while developing

their own writing lives. This course helps future clinicians learn to

communicate with precise imagery and metaphors, while revealing

connections between the practice of medicine and the arts of poetry and

In this course, instead of reading literature, we will read about literature. In a

well-developed philosophical tradition stretching back at least to Plato,

scholars have asked, “What is literature, and what does it do?” This semester,

we will join them.

The working definition of theory in this course is a set of generalizations or

questions, usually rather abstract, about the nature or value of a particular

practice or set of practices. Literary theory, then, refers to the process of

understanding the nature of literature, the function of literature in society, and

the relation between the text and the author, the reader, language, culture, and

history. Some questions we will explore in this course: What is literature and

I borrowed the title of this literature course from a long poem by Adrienne

Rich, in which she asks whether poetry can help us find our way through

the dangers that mark the world of the twenty-first century. Rich and many

other writers have asked what value imaginative literature has in "a difficult

world." Does it create a bridge to cross the abyss between the personal and

the public, the aesthetic and the political, the I and the we? Should

literature be such a bridge, or is this a misunderstanding and misuse of art?

To address these questions, we will read the works of poets, fiction writers,

memoirists, and theorists. You will add your voices to this conversation by

doing many kinds of writing-a poetry anthology, a personal essay, and a

critical/analytical essay. I will also give frequent short written assignments

which will become the spring—boards into each day's discussion. I hope we

will often find ourselves out beyond the known world, needing an atlas or at

least a GPS. There will be a written mid- term exam and an oral final exam.

I will ask you to present some of your work to the class, memorize and

recite a poem, raise questions, bring your experience of the world to bear on

what we read, help each other improve as writers, and actively engaged in

all course activities.

Simply stated, the goal in Writing Essays is to write well, to place one word

after another in a unique and careful way so that not only will the reader

understand the message conveyed in a given essay, but they might understand

something of the messenger as well. How is this done?

It is not an easy task or one that is undertaken lightly. There are many aspects a

writer must consider and some of these will be explored during the semester.

Word choice will be discussed and examined since, like fingerprints, each

word leaves an individual imprint along an essay’s path. Style, the

unmistakable scent of a writer, will be developed too since it is often the case

that how an essayist writes is every bit as important as what an essayist writes.

Focus, consistency, authority and self-discovery all must be factored into the

equation, too. Indeed, it is the process of self-discovery or self-exploration that

can be at once the most maddening and most rewarding aspect of the essay

writing experience.

The class format will be a blend of reading and discussion of our texts, brief

writing exercises, peer workshops, in class readings and conferences with the

instructor. Our readings will provide examples of some of the finer essayists of

our time and will serve as guides for what a truly great essay can do. But the

primary concern of the class will be on the creation and refinement of our own

work so that, by the semester’s end, each student will be able to trace back,

word by word, their own unique and carefully crafted written landscape.

roles and expectations. Imagine watching an anti-gravity football game with

Fiction helps discuss science AND science helps inform fiction. In this

Welcome to Film Heaven: An Introduction to Active Spectatorship. In film

heaven, we will go beyond the level of ―two thumbs up and will work toward

a more theoretical and historical understanding of Hollywood film and film

and abroad, and we will look at aesthetic and technical aspects of filmmaking.

With literary publishing in rapid flux, book publishers knit their brows and try

to forecast demand for printed books and e-books. Every prediction prompts a

new round of hand-wringing about the future of the book. The shift from print

to electronic formats has had—and continues to have—enormous

consequences for the publishing industry. Claims that this shift spells the death

of books, however, demand careful examination. In English 315, we’ll explore

the rapidly changing book-publishing industry, looking closely at the ways in

which industry developments and new technologies affect writers, readers, and

publishing companies. We’ll begin by studying the traditional book-publishing

model, and then we’ll study the effects of digital technologies on the

transmission of writers’ works to audiences of readers. By the end of the

ever wondered what makes those heroes “heroic”? What makes heroic

We’ll begin our expedition by creating a literary guide and a literary roadmap

A study of literature, partly in translation, from African, Asian and the Caribbean countries. The course examines the specific historical and cultural contexts in which these literatures arise.

“[T]he accession to independence of the colonial countries places an important

question before the world.... The fundamental duel which seemed to be that

between colonialism and anti-colonialism, and indeed between capitalism and

socialism, is already losing some of its importance. What counts today, the

question which is looming on the horizon, is the need for a redistribution of

wealth. Humanity must reply to this question, or be shaken to pieces by it.”

Fanon's comment serves as a point of entry for this course. Gesturing towards

a “postcolonial” world, Fanon identifies the need for a global, not national,

resolution for the problem of unequal distribution of wealth which European

imperialism had created. It’s an urgent matter for all humanity, he warns.

Today, when we confront the devastating consequences of global inequalities,

Fanon’s warning rings as true as it did in the 1950s when formal or territorial

colonization was coming to an end and the “Third World” was emerging.

Fanon’s way of seeing the world—not as discrete units of nations and cultures,

but as people and communities located unequally in the global networks of

commerce and power—is a foundational concept in postcolonial studies.

Postcolonial studies is a dynamic and multidisciplinary field that has given rise

to some of today’s most innovative and influential theories of cultural

production. This class is intended to serve as a general introduction to

postcolonial literature and theory. Toward that end, we will read some great

novels by postcolonial authors, grapple with some thought-provoking theory,

and watch some stirring films. We will pay special attention to the imperatives

of globalization and how they are shaping the future of postcolonial studies.

This course will introduce students to Indian culture and society through a study of

popular Indian cinema. The Indian film industry is the largest in the world and

wields tremendous power as an economic and cultural force in the country.

Focusing primarily on the “Bollywood” film industry based in Mumbai, we will

examine how commercial cinema has influenced cultural attitudes and social

change in India. The course will highlight how Bollywood films have addressed

contentious topics like national identity, gender injustice, and globalization in

contemporary India.

The course consists of two parts: The first part, taught over a CD Mod in fall 2019,

will introduce students to Bollywood cinema and its impact on Indian society.

Following that, students will travel to India for two weeks (Dec. 27-Jan. 9) to

experience firsthand the complex mechanisms that fuel this industry. In Mumbai,

students will have the opportunity to observe the production and marketing aspects

of Bollywood films, visit a studio, meet with people who work in the industry, and

attend lectures/workshops given by experts in the field. In Kolkata, students will

learn about the “parallel” cinema movement in India and, in collaboration with

students of St. Xavier’s College, will investigate the impact of Bollywood on the

everyday lives of people in India. The trip will wind down with a visit to one of

India’s greatest cultural treasures, the Taj Mahal of Agra.

The course surveys the American literary approach to nature and environment,

with particular attention to questions of power and privilege. Some of this liter-

ature is about how people have depicted nature as a utilitarian space—what has

been done with vast forests, minerals, or rivers, particularly in terms of energy

creation and the ramifications of these usage decisions? How has that affected

various cultures and indigenous people, as well as natural plant and animal

communities? The styles and traditions of American environmental writing

have changed dramatically over time and we will examine the work of nature

writers from cities as well as rural spaces, and lots of writers of color. We will

read, think, discuss, and write critically about a wide range of environmental

writers from various genres. We will gain an appreciation for and become fa-

miliar with many of the most influential writers and texts in the field as well as

some of the most innovative new writers.

The English/Comm 386 course is an upper-level course in the English/

Communication Department sequence of upper-division courses at CSB/SJU.

It is also a liberal arts course. As a 300-level course, it seeks to build on

foundational skills you have encountered (such as effective critical thinking,

reading, writing, and oral communication skills in Core and Humanities) so

that you can pursue upper-division academic work (in this case, a

specific exploration of one facet of film studies) competently, efficiently, and

even in leadership roles. There are no prerequisites.

As a liberal arts course, English/Comm 386 deals with contemporary social

values in culture (personal identity, film viewing habits, gender positions, class

positions, narrative representations), and how those social values shape,

determine, regulate our individual responses to everyday life. In other words,

this liberal arts story is your story.

Linguistics, as a discipline, is the scientific study of human language. This

course will cover the core of linguistic study: phonetics and phonology (sounds

and sound systems), morphology (word shapes), syntax (sentence structure),

semantics (the meanings of linguistic forms), and pragmatics (meaning in

context). We'll also look at a wide variety of other topics including

sociolinguistics (language and identity), language contact, change, death, and

revitalization; and writing systems. This challenging but fascinating topic area

will prove relevant not only to students of English and education but also to

those majoring in foreign languages, philosophy, psychology, or computer

science.

Readers of Medieval European literature often encounter strange figures:

demonized Saracens and non-Christian others, hybrid creatures, and

monstrous, supernatural women. Who or what is being Othered in these

representations? On whose authority are African people represented as

half-animal? Or Muslims as demonic? Our course examines the creation of

‘outsiders’ in the Middle Ages and how medieval writers constructed

difference. Topics of inquiry include: Othering of Saracens and

non-Christians; Muslim-Christian Dialogues, Estranging the Feminine,

Labyrinths, and Hybrid Creatures: Myth, Monsters, and the Imagination.

As part of this highly active course, our group visits HMML to learn about

interfaith dialogue and co-existence in Middle Eastern manuscripts; we

examine the Othering of women in scientific as well as literary treatises, as

well as important responses to this Othering in the works of female Christian

mystics and secular writers such as Christine de Pizan; and, we

uncover hybridity as an image of difference: mythical creatures abound in

medieval texts, romances in particular but also in epic poems and in

sea-monster laden cartography. Writing projects throughout the semester focus

on integrating research meaningfully into creative writing as well as literary

and historical analyses.
