JT English Department Mission and VisionDRAFT:

Mission: The mission of the Jefferson Township School District English Language Arts Department is to foster the development of literate individuals who critically read and purposefully write for a variety of inter- & intra- personal purposes, so as to fulfill their need to connect with texts and the world.

Vision: When students engage in meaningful literacy instruction, by being exposed to diverse texts and a variety of literary perspectives, they become self-motivated in their learning. The Jefferson Township English Department encourages students to examine the how and why of human passions, hopes, dreams, achievements, anxieties, downfalls, transgressions, and failures of the past, present, and future through literature.

Why we teach . . .Don’t ever forget . . .

If we believe that we are who we are . . . that our individual voices are a product of all of our experiences including everything we have read, then knowing and harnessing what we are curious about is important. Being a critical, thoughtful, and reflective reader and writer is crucial to this human process.

What we teach . . .Skills, Strategies, Content - Texts

But more importantly literature helps us teach things like compassion, empathy, social justice, and metacognition.

Instruction Non-Negotiables The emphasis of this curriculum is releasing the responsibility to the students, so they learn to do this work on their own.

So . . .

We only read aloud to our students for 10-15 minutes at a time, if at all.

We only watch clips of movies.

Differentiate by meeting with students in small groups or one on one.

This will promote growth for all students, as well as help students work to their potential.

Get Involved!Parents,

Please take some time to review the English curriculum on the District website. The curriculum has been developed to include a variety of genres and themes. For every unit, your child will be choosing a title and engaging in a socratic circle/book club. This choice and ownership will be very exciting and truly cultivate their love for reading. We want you to be a part of celebrating this reading, so you are invited to preview the books as your child makes their selections; this will give you the opportunity to stay involved and discuss the subject matter and content with your child as they read. Please keep in mind, some of text choices for the socratic circles/book clubs may contain more sensitive content than others.
