English Exam #1 – Oesterle
Gun Control
How it is recently? Gun Control is one real special thing in America . The NRA has a real big
influence in this country, especially on voters. If you want to be voted for
president you have to get anyhow “friendly” with the NRA – cause else the NRA
says to all his members (which are a real big part of American citizens who can
change the result of an election easily) simply that this candidate is against the
2nd amendment and cause of this against his own constitution – and who would
vote such a president.
Barack Obama avoided this topic till now in the white house cause of the NRA and cause he had to
fight against the NRA and that is actually a fight you cannot win!
Arguments
Pro Contra
High rate of murders, suicides, etc. The 2nd amendment allows (interpretet this way) the American citizens to keep a gun
High rate of rampage (e.g. a six year old first grader shot another six year old first grader with a gun of his uncle!)
“Your home is your castle”-image You should be able to self-defend against people who want you anything bad – cause you may not have the time to wait for police
There are always people who are e.g. mentally ill and are still allowed to keep a gun – so they can easily kill anyone
During US-history guns and weapons had always a big thing to gain freedom – e.g. in the colonial wars they got success with this
No security for police or military – they do often get shot and generally innocent people get often shot cause the Americans aren’t all trained that well
For the Americans a gun is as well a symbol for them, that they can do something against their government cause they can ACT not only TALK!
Tabelle 1 - Arguments pro and contra gun control
Americans against Germans opinion about gun control The Americans handle the gun control debate in a very different way, than
we Germans would do. In America you say, if you see the high rates of
murders or suicides, that the citizens need more guns and weapons to fight
against such people. In Germany they probably would say, that you have to
have stricter restrictions, so that no one can have a gun, to kill anyone else.
Another example is that after a rampage in the USA the president of the NRA
came to this town and talked about why every American should be allowed
to keep a gun. So, even though that day many school-aged pupils died
through such a gun, the president of the NRA makes commercial for guns. In
Germany there would be a silence and grief a few days long.

Speaker qualities Barack Obama is a very good speaker – it seems as if he
learned his whole speech completely by heard and as if
he hasn’t to read from a teleprompter or anything
similar. On top of that Obama knows how to get the
attention and the support of the audience, so he always
says sentences that directly concern the group in front
of which he’s recently speaking.
As well Barack Obama seems to be very friendly and near to the society and not that far away that
politicians usually seem to be. So he seems to know the problems of the usual citizens, cause he
seems to have experienced the things himself.

Health Care – RAM
American Health Care System Before Obama there were a lot of problems concerning the U.S. health
care system. There was made a difference between public and private
health insurance. There was a clear dominance of the private element
over the public.
The Private health insurance was divided into two parts: Medicare and
Medicaid – but there are always Problems concerning both parts –
here they’re listed.
1. Private – Medicare
a. Problems
i. Gaps in preventive care coverage
ii. No coverage of dental, hearing or vision care
iii. No covering of skilled nursing facilities (=Pflegeeinrichtungen)
iv. High premiums (22% of the income of a senior)
2. Private – Medicaid
a. Problems
i. Childless adults aren’t covered
ii. Many poor people still gain too much money
iii. Too less coverage
3. Public
a. Problems
i. Companies can say, that they don’t pay the insurance if they would have to pay too much
money as they want to
ii. Pre-existing conditions aren’t covered by a insurance
iii. You have to pay your premium with your money high prices
iv. You have to pay higher premiums if you get ill – so you try to go seeing the doctor as
seldom as possible, cause you have to pay higher premiums if you do go
The red marked problems wants Obama to solve in his “Obama Plan” concerning health care.
RAM (Remote Area Medical) As well there’s another sign for the bad conditions concerning
health care – the RAM. RAM is an organization like “MSF”
(=Ärzte ohne Grenzen), which cares for people who can’t pay a
doctor in any way. In the RAM are lots of voluntary doctors,
dentists,… Who do the jobs for free. The things which are
needed to build such a health care system are financed by
donations and that makes it possible to build up this system.
The RAM usually travels in a truck in which they can transport all their stuff. So they drive e.g. in large
stadiums and build up their medical tools. To this stadiums the people come to from cities kilometers
away to reach the only possibility to get a good health coverage.
