HOW IT ACTUALLY HELPED AMERICA
Caused our Military to rethink how they fought
wars.
Provided or Military with the motivation to create
new equipment ex. M16 Rifle and Helicopters used
as War Machines.
OPERATION DESERT STORM
Removal of Iraq Forces from Kuwait
US presents in Middle East
Pressure between Middle East and US goes out of
control
Leads up to more wars in later years
DESERT STORM HELPS AMERICA
Showed that an all volunteer military force was
extremely affective.
Showed that the training our soldiers were going
through was appropriate and worth it
AFGHANISTAN
Soldiers returning home suffering
Taliban less of a threat
high level of drug addiction amongst troops
Suicide out of control amongst Soldiers
Cost of War high
Afghanistan country destroyed (rebuilding)
FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM IS WORTH IT
Showed that America will not put up with terrorist
attacks.
Helped establish Democracy in a country
terrorized by a Dictator.
WHAT ALL THIS HAS TO DO WITH THE MAIN B OOK
we chose 3 stories from the book and each are
parts of history for America
One who is against war and talks straight peace
One who is fully for the strategies of war
One who likes war and thinks it accomplishes a lot if
done correctly
SUN TZU-ART OF WAR
Sun Tzu was a Chinese general
Art of War = most influential military treatises of
all time
400-320 BCE is when it was wrote
this time known as the Warring States
His tactics are in a lot of US Military planning
today
THE ART OF WAR CONT.
Talks often about deep ways on the essential structure of
human conflict.
Capture and enemy’s army is better than to destroy it
To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill
Worst policy is to attack cities
Those skilled in war subdue the enemy’s army without
battle
This guy talks about using skill rather than muscle
M A R G R E T M E A D - W A R F A R E : A N I N V E N T I O N - - N O T A B I O L O G I C A L N E C E S S I T Y Anthropologist
Believes that people can change by learning from others
cultures
War is inevitable unless we change the social system and
outlaw classes
Believes war is an invention thought up to permit young
boys to accumulate prestige or avenge their honor or
acquire loot or wives
MARGRET MEAD CONT.
Old methods need to be replaced by social
methods
People must recognize the defect of the old
inventions and someone must make a new one
This woman is against the act of war and thinks
peace is something that can be accomplished by just
talking it over basically
J E A N B E T H K E E L S TA I N - -W H AT I S A J U S T WA R ?
Argues that 9/11 attacks were perpetuated by a radical
element whose stated objective was to destroy civic peace
in the United States.
Discuses the appropriate responses to terrorism
Peace should not be universally lauded even as war is
universally condemned, each must be evaluated critically
There are worse things than wars i.e. genocides, gulags
WHAT IS A JUST WAR CONT.
World would have been better off if the violence of
particular regimes had been confronted on the battlefield
earliar; fewer lives would have been lost in the long run
Force deployed in the name of justice has examples that
show that it lead to less violent world
Peace is a good, and so is justice, but neither is an
absolute good
WHAT IS A JUST WAR CONT. AGAIN
All violence is tragic
But more tragic is letting injustice and crime go
unpunished
Organized force fighting under rules of
engagement in order to minimize civilian casualties
can help create safe areas
FAVORITE READOut of the two stories that are against each other I agree more with Jean
Elstain because:
People are stupid and cause others to get mad so yes vengeance happens
War also has good outcomes example:
Revolutionary war (if it didn’t happen we would still be under British
rule)
War leads to a less violent world : just look not a lot of people fight us
because we appear very scary and we play strictly to win
She gets that peace is just not a given it is earned and she agrees that
you shouldn’t enter a war just because or agree to something to avoid a
conflict
