The Green, Red, and Blue teams will compete.
I do need a score-keeper/judge.
Remember you must raise your hand first in order to be called on, and you must be called
on to give an answer. Your team will lose their turn if you raise your hand but do not
have the answer ready immediately.
Remember that once a person from your team has answered, your team has used its turn.
This presentation will be on my website available for your review before the actual
exam.
Utilize it, please.
Compose the best summary for the passage below.About 1,000 tornadoes are reported each year
in the United States, but only a small percentage of those touch the ground and damage buildings. Most deaths occur to occupants of mobile homes and cars. Tornadoes are most frequent in the spring and early summer, as they are usually associated with thunderstorms.
In the United States, the area with the highest frequency of tornadoes overall is dubbed "Tornado Alley." It includes north Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Pet Emergency by Stephanie Porter Setting: A pet emergency hospital. Midnight. Sterile. Chairs placed in rows around
the waiting area. Two receptionists are busy working at computers. Kim, Stephanie, Michelle are seated side by side. Kim, small and weak, holds a lethargic, pained dog on her lap. It is wrapped in a beach towel and it whines occasionally. Stephanie leaves the trio and approaches the counter
STEPHANIE: How much longer do we have to wait?RECEPTIONIST: You're nextSTEPHANIE: Next? (she turns and sweeps the room with her outstretched arm)
After whom? we've been the only ones here for an hourRECEPTIONIST: (starts to speak but stops then rises from her seat at the computer)
I'll check with the doctor.STEPHANIE: (Walking back to her seat, mumbling) Yeah. Do that.(The dog whines
when Stephanie sits down)KIM: I can't do this (she rocks the dog)STEPHANIE: Yes You can. (she rubs the dogs head)KIM: I mean alone.STEPHANIE: You aren't alone. We'll stay here with you.
KIM: (a heavy sigh that gradually turns to tears) I mean I can't face it. Alone. This sickness. Without Belle. You'll go back to New York. Shelley will avoid me because of Doug. Karlie will be in school all day. And I'll be at the house watching soap operas trying to forget that I'm dying. Alone. All alone because I've killed my dog. Because of a lousy 5 thousand dollars I will eliminate my chances for companionship. (she becomes gradually more emotional)She lays at my feet while I sleep. She lays at my side when I cry. She runs to the door when I pick up my keys. She barks when anyone comes near me. And I'm going to hear Doug's argument "She's just a dog" as I tell the doctor "I can't afford this surgery." I will buckle under habit. Years of scrimping and saving will trump my one selfish need for companionship. When the doctor comes in, I know I will say "no" to the surgery because I will feel guilty leaving Doug with the bill for the surgery and a dog he doesn't want.
STEPHANIE: Who cares what Doug wants at this point? Who cares what bills he has? Do what you need for once.
SHELLEY: Are there any options to this surgery? I mean, maybe the dog could make it without surgery.
RECEPTIONIST:(almost yelling) NEXT!!!! (Stephanie and Michelle help Kim to her feet. Kim is still holding the dog. And they both follow her out)
RECEPTIONIST: Nice dog. I hope it can make it. But I really don't see what the rush is.
