Chairman’s report 2007-08

Another year of change at the top

- Reda Ibn-Tahaikt as Internationals Coordinator- David Hubbard as Finance Office for 6 months- Lack of PR & marketing, sub-committee continues- Consolidation of split from BKA to EKA

Good news from Areas, for example

- Kent youth development - Milton Keynes winning EYC 2010 bid- Rise of Clubs like Manchester Warriors- Cambridge City gaining Clubmark (and grants)- Clubs like Highbury recruiting & retaining players

Do not forget…

… that Korfball in England supported by a large group of volunteers giving time and energy … to thank the people working hard so that everyone can play and enjoy this sport… without them, Korfball cannot run

EKA National League: top places

- Premier Division Winners: Trojans (London)- Premier Division Runners-up: Mitcham (London)- First Division Winners: Norwich Knights (Norfolk)- First Division Runners-up: Kingfisher (Kent)- Reserve Division Winners: Mitcham (London)- Reserve Division Runners-up: Trojans (London)

EKA National League: changes- Invicta Sharks (Kent) in last place & out of Premiership- Kingfisher (Kent) beat Nomads (London) in Premiership play-off- New applicants Highbury (London) beat Tornadoes (Kent) in play-off- Supernova (London) beat Highbury (London) to retain place in league - North Downs (London) withdrew from South East Regional League 2008-9, to be replaced by Highbury

EKA Cup competition

- 36 teams entered in 2007-8 (down 2) - From round 2 live, unseeded draw for next round- Semi-finals and finals played on one day- Cup Winners: Trojans (London)- Cup Runners-up: Mitcham (London)

EKA Youth Championships

- U9 Winners: Scorpions (London)- U11 Winners: Scorpions (London)- U13 Winners: Kingfisher (Kent)- U16 Winners: Bearsted (Kent)- U19 Championships did not run

EKA Inter-area

- Senior Winners: British Student Korfball Squad- Senior Runners-up: Cambridgeshire- Youth Inter-area events regionalised

EKA County Championships

- Will be hosted by West Midlands in 2008- Entries restricted this season as playing on artificial turf for the first time

EKA Competitions: thanks to…… all Area and Clubs that hosted events… all competitors who took part… all coaches and managers of teams… all referees (without whom matches could not take place)… the EKA Competitions sub-committee… the EKA Referees sub-committee… Graham Crafter for drawing up fixtures

EKA Competitions: the future- EKA National League Premier Division in same format- Norwich Knights welcomed to the Premiership- EKA First Division expanded and regionalised; will contain both current First Division (named South East Regional Korfball League) and Central England Korfball League- More regions to be included in future years- Modifications to other competitions such as the EKA Cup and inter-area covered in Dom McDonald’s development review- New EKA Competitions Officer; Anna is standing down

Disciplinary report 2007-08

Disciplinary comments…… fewer yellow cards… level of dissent seems to have gone down… increase in cards in Area leagues – possibly due to reporting… principles on admission of video evidence proposed… proposed amendment to procedures

Anti-doping report 2007-08

Anti-doping comments…… during 2007-08 there were no doping cases… no tests arranged by the BKA… changes to WADA code from 1 January 2009

Development report 2007-08

Year dominated by Development Review - published in January to a mixed response

- ADPs well-received- Competitions Calendar well-received- Competitions structure much more contentious

All 11 ADPs received on time and have been sent out for review.

Key quantitative findings from ADPs:

Areas report approx 2,750 active players

But...

EKA Registrations database has details of 2,374

Is this...over-reporting in ADPs? under-reporting to BKA

database? both?

Therefore…

Any regional competition wishing to be considered for entry to the 2010 Champions Trophy requires…

the combined membership of the Areas involved (according to the Areas own ADPs) to be more than 15% of 2,750, ie, 413.

But here’s the good news…

Most Areas (9/11) feel positive about their current state of health, and that of their clubs.

Most Areas (10/11) feel they and their clubs are doing better in 2007-8 than they were in 2006-7.

Most Areas (8/11) broke even or made a surplus last time around.

But here’s the good news…

Review of coaching qualifications, which will enable us to tackle the enormous shortfalls that the ADPs have identified

Referee’s report 2007-08

Referees Sub-committee officers:

David Bond (Chair), Peter Allan, Mike Coen, Graham Crafter, Lol More, Nigel Townsend – plus one more to recruit!

Referees Sub-committee tasks:David – ChairMike – secretarial and other supportGraham – appoints NL and Cup referees, sets theory exams, takes theory courses, up-to-date with rule changesLol – manages registrations database, referee qualificationsPeter – development of higher level referees – more needed!Nigel – area liaison

Theory courses run:

Avon Tyrell, Birmingham, Cardiff, Scotland, Highbury KC, Manchester, Nottingham, Castle/Staffs/Crewe

Practical training:

- 5 assessors at NYD 2007- 2 assessors at Counties 2007- supported Inter-area event- supported BUSA Nationals

Future focus:

- many more (young) NL referees needed- work with Areas to increase numbers- improve referee feedback from NL clubs- another committee member to coordinate Lead Referees at events- working towards more female referees
