John Haycraft designed the original CELTA course in 1962 and IH teachers and trainers around the world have followed in John’s footsteps as innovators in course book and teacher training design.

At IH Galway, we are proud to be part of this world famous organisation of quality language and teacher training and our aim is to help our students and trainee teachers realise their aim to be proficient and confident in their practice.

Galway has been named the friendliest city in the world and our students would agree with this! Situated on the spectacular Atlantic coast of Ireland, this small university city has 75,000 people, of which 20% are students, so there is a lively atmosphere in the city all year round.

Galway has been nominated European Capital of Culture 2020, and it’s not difficult to see why: The International Arts Festival and the Film Festival are just two of the arts offerings our students enjoy and take part in during the summer. Traditional Irish music can be heard all over the city every evening and our students love listening to the sounds and taking part in the Irish dancing sessions too! With the world famous Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands, Connemara and the Wild Atlantic Way on our doorstep, there are many beautiful sights to visit – come see for yourself!

This programme combines an interactive English language learning experience with sports, activities and visits. General English 20 lessons We help you to practise the key communication skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, with a focus on vocabulary development. Some grammar is included but the main focus is helping our students to become confident using English. We follow a course book, combined with motivating authentic materials, such as newspapers, videos, and radio.

Personalised Study Programme: PSPIn the afternoons, we can direct you to practice materials for specific areas such as vocabulary, grammar, writing, reading, listening, and speaking. This extra service is offered free to our students.

Social ProgrammeVisit the most popular places in Galway with us after class and practise your English some more! Some of these visits are free and for others you will pay an entrance fee. We organise full day visits to beautiful places such as the Aran Islands and the world famous Cliffs of Moher, and some evening visits to traditional pubs to listen to Irish music and meet the locals!

English for all the familyCombine a holiday in Galway with some English lessons. We offer programmes for children and teens as well as for the parents. Lessons are combined with afternoon sports and activities for the children and parents can attend morning and afternoon lessons.

Accommodation

Homestay All our homestays are based in Galway city and within walking distance of the centre. Homestays are all types: a couple with young children, teenagers or older children who have left home, single parent families, single people… there is no standard type. Accommodation in a home stay is:

• Single bedroom with shared bathroom (en suite is also available)

• Breakfast and dinner during the week and lunch is included at the weekend

We visit each new home stay to ensure that they meet IH Quality Standards and we follow up with regular inspection visits to ensure that these Quality Standards are met.
