Read the story and answer the questions that follows. Sometimes it would be better if we check first before we take any action hastily. That was what Reuben and Zainal learnt last week. They were on their way home from school last week. As they passed Mak Indah’s guava orchard, they saw two men behind the bushes. They became suspicious as the two men looked like strangers to them. Knowing that Mak Indah was alone because her husband, a teacher, was still in school, they decided to frighten the two men. They went behind the two men quietly and swung their bags at their heads. At the same time, Zainal shouted, “Police! What are you doing there?” The two men fell to the ground, shouting for help. Mak Indah, hearing the commotion, came running out of the house. She laughed when Reuben told her about the two men. She went and helped them up to their feet. Apparently, they were her two workers whom she had just employed to help out with the plucking of the guava’s that morning. They were looking for some fruits in the bushes. Reuben and Zainal apologized to them and in return, promised to help the pluck the guava fruits. That was their first visit to the village. That was why the boys had not seen them before. Soon they were happily plucking and packing the fruits together.

Performance Standard

B5 Demonstrate the ability to use language in a variety of situation using largely appropriate language convention.

Descriptor B5DB1 Reading and summarizing text.

Evidence B5DB1E1 Able to extract relevant points and reorganize them into a paragraph using suitable connectors.

STUDENT’S COPY

Read the passage and complete the following task.

Reading is a very good habit. Parents should encourage their children to start reading

from a very early age. Children who start reading from young learn to develop a love for

reading and for books in general.

Young readers also learn to be able to sit down quietly for the time it takes them to

complete the books. This gives them the ability to focus on what they are doing which will

help them later on in their schooling years.

When children learn to read, they are introduced to a new world, where they learn

new vocabulary and more often than not, have very good general knowledge.

In schools, it has also been found that those who are happy to read and able to read

well are very confident young children compared to their friends who have not picked up

the reading habit.

A Folk Tale About a Mother and Her Daughter Little Varya went with her mother to the field. It was a hot day, so Varya went and lay down under a shady tree. Soon she was fast asleep. When she woke up, everyone was gone. She was afraid. Then she walked and walked until she came to a village. There were many people in this village, but her mother was not there. Varya began to cry loudly. An old man came to her and asked, “Why you are crying, little one?” Varya told him, “I am looking for my mother. I don’t know where she is.” The old man felt very sorry for Varya. He asked, “What does your mother look like, little one?” Varya did not know how to describe her mother. She could only say, “She is the most beautiful woman in the world.” The old man called all the beautiful women in the village. Varya looked at each one of them. Then she said, “None of them is my mother. My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world.” A lot of people came to look at the poor lost girl. Suddenly, a woman ran towards Varya and hugged her. She was fat and her face was big and broad. She had very few teeth in her mouth. Her eyes were very small and her nose was really large and broad. “This is my mother! I told you my mother is the most beautiful woman in the world!” Varya shouted happily. The people who were crowding around Varya began to laugh. The old man said to them, “Don’t laugh. This little child has just shown us something. We don’t love people because they are beautiful. People look beautiful to us because we love them.”
