Running from September to June, thiscourse has two levels and variousstart dates. Students will take aplacement test on arrival and will beplaced in the appropriate class.

Academic English PreparatoryCourse (AEPC)The course provides a solidfoundation in the language skillsnecessary for:• successful academic study• professional development • general English proficiency

In addition, the course introducesstudents to the British culture andway of life, and the methods of studycommonly found in universities in Britain.

The course comprises the following:core language skills, core academicskills, and a range of afternoonoptions classes (subject to availabilityand demand) including:• IELTS Preparation and Practice• Social English • British Life and Culture• English for Science and Technology • English for Social Science• Pronunciation and Speaking• Teacher Training / Development• Lecture Programme

Pathway to Academic English (PAE)PAE caters for students at all levelsexcept Beginners. This course helps todevelop students’ overall EnglishLanguage skills for a variety ofeducational, personal and professionalreasons. PAE is an integrated skillscourse which focuses on accuracy andfluency in Speaking and Writing,improving Reading and Listening skills,and confidence in using the language ineveryday situations.

Morning classes focus on LanguageDevelopment and in the afternoonsthere are a range of options to choosefrom including ExaminationPreparation and Practice, Speakingand Pronunciation, Social English andBusiness English etc.

For both courses we provide a weeklylecture on a range of topics, andregular educational visits. There arealso weekly social activities, forexample; conversation club, football,and film club.

Closed GroupsWe can arrange special courses forclosed groups at different times ofthe year. The programme of Englishstudy will be tailored to the specificneeds of the group. The ELTC offers modules in 4 areas ofEnglish language study to ERASMUSand Study Abroad students, inparticular those with English as amajor subject in their homeinstitution.

1) English as a Foreign Language*These general English modules focuson the 4 skills of reading, writing,listening and speaking, as well asvocabulary, pronunciation andgrammar. The module is available atdifferent levels (e.g. Upper-intermediate, Advanced andProficiency), so that you are taughtand assessed at the right languagelevel. Classes aim to improvelanguage through a range of topicscovering aspects of British society.

2) English Language and Culture*These more focussed Englishlanguage modules consider a specificarea of English-speaking culture andthe literary genres associated with it.Language skills and accuracy arefacilitated through the close study ofa range of texts (mainly British) in theareas of Literature, News Media, Filmor Technology for example. Theclasses encourage discussion andreflection of the cultural and linguisticissues raised in the texts.

3) English for Academic Purposes*These academic modules focus onthe use of the English language inacademic and professional situations.

Areas such as 'Reading and Writing'and 'Speaking and Listening' arecovered in two individual modules, sothat the specific text types andassociated language can be studied insufficient depth. The modules will notonly complement your currentuniversity study in the UK, but willalso provide you with transferableprofessional language skills.

English Language Teaching These modules aim to increaseconfidence and enhance skills inteaching English as a ForeignLanguage. They give participants astrong foundation in the core areas ofteaching knowledge and techniquesneeded in the English languageclassroom. The modules areparticularly suited to those studentswho are already training to beteachers in their home institution andhave a high level of English.

ClassesThere are beginners, intermediateand advanced classes for women andone mixed ability class for men. Theclasses are friendly and relaxed, withan emphasis on improving spokenEnglish and are taught by qualifiedteachers, assisted by studentvolunteers. The one and a half hourclasses are held on Monday andFriday mornings throughout bothsemesters.

CrècheA free crèche for children agedbetween 1 year and 5 years is alsoprovided and run by qualified staff(subject to availability). We regretthat children under 1 year cannot beaccommodated, in accordance with

national legislation. Please note thatthe creche is usually full, with awaiting list, very early in semester 1.

Students can register for the classesthroughout both semesters at 11.15amon Monday mornings in the OctagonCentre Council Chamber. Pleasebring a completed application formand your partner's blue Ucard.Application forms are available fromthe ELTC Reception at 78 Hoyle Streetand the Student Advice Centre in theStudents' Union.
