Dear Mr. Campbell, Before I get started on myself, I would first like to start off b y saying that I am very delighted to be in your E nglish 1103 course. Even though it’s mad early, I feel as if your enthusiasm will truly get me “FIRED UP” and rea dy to express myself through writing the best way I know how. Due to the fact that I had the opportunity to read your letter before the first day of class, you definitely made my first day of College easy and full of comfort. Simpl y because your letter allowed me to realize what t ype of Professor I would be learning from throughout this semester. And because of that, I thank you. But okay, now the tables turn and it’s all about me now. I am Zna Lashae Le Grand, born March 30 th , 1995 in the city of Greensboro, North Carolina. However I basically grew up in High Point, North Carolina because it ’s where I lived for approximately 11 years which allowed me to attend Montlieu Elementary, Penn -Griffin the School for the Arts (middle school) and T. Wingate Andrews High School. With that being said even though, it’s fairly boring in these two cities, I am sincerely proud to be from this particular area in general. I say this because I personally feel that where you come from and or grew up, can confirm a lot about your lifestyle within itself. Whether it’s what you’ve been through or what you’ve seen to be considered the right or wrong lifestyle  to live. Regardless of where you’re from, your origination should always be claimed. But anyways, (I’ll continue ) there are a few things that I wish were obvious to know about me, by my appearance. For instance, my ethnicity is one of my main examples , because I’m looked at as an African- American which doesn’t bother me at all, but because h alf of me is Jamaican I feel as if it makes me even more unique. Or maybe even if it were my talents/abilities that were obviously seen. Like my ability to dance, which is also a major talent of mine because I’m very strong in this subject mentally and  physically. And to top that, I wish my general yet natural characteristics, such as my competitive ways and the fact that I am an achiever and a responsible person, were all seen at a quick glance. But hey then again what can I say that’ s what makes me special, and what also allows me to be as interesting as possible. Although, these characteristics and skills aren’t literally tattooed nor written on my body, they can only be discov ered through a certain period of time. Which is the same way that I developed them. As a 2 nd  grader attending Montlieu Elementary I was definitely bold and open- minded just as now, but of course maybe not as broad, I mean I was only in the 2 nd  grade. However, during this early stage of my childhood I had then begun to attempt cheerleading, dance and g ymnastics. I just had a feeling that I needed to get active with something that I had an interest in. So therefore, I took it upon myself to inform my mom about my current interests and the next thing you know I was enrolled with Cheer 2000 to take cheer and tumbling classes. It was so exciting and even though at the time every move was so new to me, it still all came natural somehow. Along with my enrollment in the classes at Cheer 2000, I had decided to join the dance ministry at my church. Which had officially led me to be a super busy 2 nd  grader. Too  bad all of these activities didn’t last as long as I thought they would have. Eventually I had stopped taking cheer and gymnastic classes after a year or so, but dance on the other hand stuck with me for some great reason.

Dear Mr. Campbell,

Before I get started on myself, I would first like to start off by saying that I am very

delighted to be in your English 1103 course. Even though it’s mad early, I feel as if your

enthusiasm will truly get me “FIRED UP” and ready to express myself through writing the best

way I know how. Due to the fact that I had the opportunity to read your letter before the first dayof class, you definitely made my first day of College easy and full of comfort. Simply because

your letter allowed me to realize what type of Professor I would be learning from throughout this

semester. And because of that, I thank you. But okay, now the tables turn and it’s all about me

now.

I am Zna Lashae Le Grand, born March 30th

, 1995 in the city of Greensboro, North

Carolina. However I basically grew up in High Point, North Carolina because it’s where I lived

for approximately 11 years which allowed me to attend Montlieu Elementary, Penn-Griffin the

School for the Arts (middle school) and T. Wingate Andrews High School. With that being said

even though, it’s fairly boring in these two cities, I am sincerely proud to be from this particular

area in general. I say this because I personally feel that where you come from and or grew up,can confirm a lot about your lifestyle within itself. Whether it’s what you’ve been through or

what you’ve seen to be considered the right or wrong lifestyle to live. Regardless of where

you’re from, your origination should always be claimed. But anyways, (I’ll continue) there are a

few things that I wish were obvious to know about me, by my appearance. For instance, my

ethnicity is one of my main examples, because I’m looked at as an African- American which

doesn’t bother me at all, but because half of me is Jamaican I feel as if it makes me even more

unique. Or maybe even if it were my talents/abilities that were obviously seen. Like my ability to

dance, which is also a major talent of mine because I’m very strong in this subject mentally and

physically. And to top that, I wish my general yet natural characteristics, such as my competitive

ways and the fact that I am an achiever and a responsible person, were all seen at a quick glance. But hey then again what can I say that’s what makes me special, and what also allows me to be

as interesting as possible.

Although, these characteristics and skills aren’t literally tattooed nor written on my body,

they can only be discovered through a certain period of time. Which is the same way that I

developed them. As a 2nd

grader attending Montlieu Elementary I was definitely bold and open-

minded just as now, but of course maybe not as broad, I mean I was only in the 2nd

 grade.

However, during this early stage of my childhood I had then begun to attempt cheerleading,

dance and gymnastics. I just had a feeling that I needed to get active with something that I had an

interest in. So therefore, I took it upon myself to inform my mom about my current interests and

the next thing you know I was enrolled with Cheer 2000 to take cheer and tumbling classes. Itwas so exciting and even though at the time every move was so new to me, it still all came

natural somehow. Along with my enrollment in the classes at Cheer 2000, I had decided to join

the dance ministry at my church. Which had officially led me to be a super busy 2nd

 grader. Too

bad all of these activities didn’t last as long as I thought they would have. Eventually I had

stopped taking cheer and gymnastic classes after a year or so, but dance on the other hand stuck

with me for some great reason.

I had then been dancing with the dance ministry for about four years, which included 2nd

 –  5th

grade and I had even continued as I went into my first year of middle school. Attending

Penn Griffin the School for the Arts, a place that, at first I didn’t even want to be, because I just

knew it wasn’t going to be fun for me. Especially since all of my f riends besides a few were

going to what I thought was the best middle school in the city, A. Laurin Welborn Middle.

Luckily those few friends ended up going to Griffin right along with me and luckily I hadquickly learned that Griffin was the right school for me. The school of the ARTS, arts pertaining

to literal art, music, and dance; it was clear that I belonged at that place. That place, had sent me

directly to a growth spurt and passion for dance. As a 6th

grader I only had the chance to take the

dance course as an elective, and not yet as a major. So with my patience and satisfaction I took

the elective, flew through it with success and the ability to learn some technique, and by my 7th

grade year I was fortunate enough to become a dance major. This was one of the best

opportunities given, because then that I was a major I had the chance to perform for a variety of

events and dance shows. This which had left a huge impact on my life, because eventually dance

had literally grew as a part of me. After two years of being a dance major, I felt as if dance was

my life, because I had then fully discovered that dance made me feel like a well-known celebrity.Let alone, the feelings that dance was/is able to take away from me.

As I learned my general education along with the education of dance, I was suddenly

approaching high school. And due to the fact that I always had the urge to dance, I was

determined to attend Southwest Guilford High School because of their widely known dance team

and their remarkable performances; let alone their academic performances. However this

transition from middle to high school, had seemed to be a repeat of my transition from

elementary to middle school, and I ended up attending T. Wingate Andrews High School

instead. Which I thought would be a true downfall on behalf of my love for dance, because there

wasn’t a dance team for me to join. Apparently the thought of a “true downfall” was just another

way for me to learn of other ways to pursue my passion. With that being said, I had joined the band, since it was the closes thing to my desires. No instruments were handed my way, luckily,

but the flag pole was and with ease I became a flag/dance girl. Soon grassy football fields and

stadium stands had become my new dance/performance stage. Being in the band as an auxiliary

member, brought me to love my school more, dance more and competition. This which, gave me

more opportunities not just to do what I love but to show others how much I love do it. Along

with these opportunities it also gave me other long-run advantages, which were the advantages of

being able to compete and challenge myself as a dancer.

After two years of being a member of the auxiliary team/band (sophomore year and

junior year) and one year of varsity cheerleading (sophomore year). I was finally able to join an

actual dance company, by the name of Vinmark International Dance Academy. Something that I

wish I could’ve been a part of and experienced back in my younger days, specifically during my

elementary years. To think of it as a blessing, and as grateful as I was, I could do no complaining

because it was all at the ball of my toes (literally). With greater opportunities of competing

against different types of competitive dancers and more time to develop needed technique and

 proper dance materials.

Dance is also the reason for my sureness of my major, which is pre-kinesiology (the

study of the body) with thoughts of minoring in dance. Dance helped me with this decision

because if there were any reason that I were to get injured from dancing I would be capable of

properly healing myself. Because even though dance is nothing but beauty, it can easily cause

damage to the body. However dance has and always will have a huge impact on my life, so

therefore my passion for dance continues, and so will this dance journey. Now that I am afreshman here at UNC Charlotte, even if I choose not to minor in dance, I hope to possibly

become a Gold Duster. Bringing the opportunities of dancing and showing just as much pride

here that I had then/have for my high school. And as stated before, Dance has and always will

be a major part of me as a person, so just to give you a heads up, if you ever give us free writes

throughout the course 9 times out of 10, my writing will most likely relate to dance in some type

of way. This is me, Zna Lashae Le Grand, a young woman full of passion, desires and interests.
