You should know them because they are very popular holidays. Do you want to learn about Chuseok and Thanksgiving Day? Chuseok and Thanksgiving Day are popular holidays. There is a lot of delicious and traditional food to eat on these holidays. People meet together with their relatives, and both of them celebrate for the harvest, too. Chuseok and Thanksgiving Day are lovely holidays that people celebrate with the whole family. Chuseok is an important holiday in Korea. We wear traditional clothes, Han-Bok. We visit our ancestor’s graveyard and have a memorial service to honor them. There is delicious food like Songpyon, and we drink special rice liquor. There is also a traditional dance called Ganggangsullae. It is a Korean traditional circle dance. We have Korean wrestling matches, Ssireum in Chuseok. I love Chuseok! Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival. It is a holiday celebrated primarily in the U.S. and Canada. On Thanksgiving Day, people eat turkey and other delicious food. It was started to celebrate the holiday with Indians who helped the Pilgrims with farming. Thanksgiving Day is the last Thursday of November. It is a great holiday. Don’t you think so? August 15th in lunar calendar is Chuseok. The last Thursday in November is Thanksgiving Day. There are many differences and similarities between Thanksgiving Day and Chuseok. First, Chuseok is Korean festival, and Thanksgiving Day is American festival. People eat a lot of food during both holidays. On Chuseok, Koreans eat Songpyon, which is rice cake steamed on a layer of pine needles. Also, we eat various pan-fried dishes and newly harvested fruits and rice. Thanksgiving Day originated from Plymouth festival. On Thanksgiving Day, Americans eat turkey, mashed potato, pumpkin pie, and many other dishes. On Chuseok, Koreans gather, and do marry-go-round circling together with the friends and family. On Thanksgiving Day in New York, there is a big parade with beautiful wagons and famous people. Common thing about Chuseok and Thanksgiving Day is that we both thank God for giving well harvested food. If farmers didn’t work hard, we wouldn’t have much food. On Chuseok, I make a visit to my ancestor’s grave and gather some chestnuts with my family. My uncle gets them for me, so I am thankful that he gets them hurting himself cracking chestnuts. My family and the relatives always meet on Chuseok. I’m really happy when I see them. On next Chuseok, I want to meet them again. In Korea, we have Chuseok. However, there is a different kind of Chuseok in the U.S. Americans call their Chuseok, ‘Thanksgiving Day.’ Nevertheless, Thanksgiving Day and Chuseok are different.
