English Year 4 Summer Exam Guides PAPER 1: READING (45 minutes) Boys will be asked to read a passage of fiction and then answer a series of questions designed to test comprehension and offer personal response to the text. PAPER 2: WRITING (50 minutes) Boys will be given a selection of titles and asked to choose ONE to respond to. Boys should spend a few moments planning their response before starting to write. Tips for story writing Spend time on your mind map or plan to get as many ideas down as possible. The Plot Introduction-set the scene and introduce characters. Main/ middle paragraph-build up the action, describe character feelings, describe climax Resolution/conclusion-what happened after the main action, is there a happy ending? One gloomy day….. 3) Begin with direct speech 4) Start with a question 5) Use a flashback e.g. As I wandered the lonely cliff my mind went back twenty years ago…… Concluding your story 1) Cliff hanger ending e.g. I heard a cackle behind me. Would I ever be able to survive the night? 2) Circle back to the beginning e.g. I would never again wonder what was hidden behind the secret door! 3) Moral ending where a lesson has been learnt e.g. That was the last time I would ever lie to my friend! English Comprehension Tips

1) Read the text twice through

2) Answer the questions using full sentences

3) Make sure these sentences have Capital letters and punctuation

4) Look at how many marks each question is worth- this will give you an idea of how much detail to include
