The natural settings of Appalachia were prominent in Jesse Stuart’s writing. Before his death he

donated seven hundred and four acres of woodlands in W. Hollow to the Kentucky State Nature preserves

Commission. This way, natural settings will be kept undamaged for the future generations.

The farmers in Kentucky in the 1930’s were less modern that the people in bigger cities in America. These farmers were uneducated. This is because it took a few generations get schools in Kentucky. When the children of these farmers grew up and became adults, they had three choices about where to live: they could stay in the farm, they could move away or they could move to the city and come back again (which is what Jesse Stuart did). 1. Dave knew his father would bring a gun to school and was afraid his father may shoot the Professor. It is hard for him to know what his father would do, since he is still a kid. He thought his father wouldn’t understand how school had changed over the years and take revenge on the Professor Herbert. Maybe he was also afraid he may not be able to go to school if something terrible happens. (10 points)

2. Professor Herbert wants to teach Dave to be responsible about his actions. He also wants to teach Dave to be respectful of others and their property. He wants Dave to know that even if you do not have money, you are still responsible to find a way to do the right thing.

3. Pa’ is very upset at what he thinks is going on at school. He just wants Dave to get a good education and wants to make sure he is doing the right thing by his son.

Mom and Pa’ have been married for a long time and have many children together. He knows Mom well. He knows he will receive support from Mom. He knows she can help him keep his head clear, so he won’t do anything crazy. He wants her support and opinion.

(10 points)

Extended HOTS Questions

1. (15 points)a. In the beginning, Pa wanted to go into the school and show the professor how strong and tough he could be. He even thought of using a gun to settle the problem.

When Professor Herbert showed the school and went into the classrooms with Pa’, he was able to see how much learning was going on. Through being allowed to be in class, while the students were learning, Pa’ was able to experience a new way of learning. Little by little, Pa’ calmed down. He understood that Professor Herbert was not a threat to him or Dave; that he cared for Dave’s education and they were both on the same side. At the end of the story, when he talks to Mom, Pa’ tells her that one day he will take her to see a germ. He tells her how nice Professor Herbert is and how the strange school is different from school in their time. His opinion has definitely changed.

b. The HOTS I used is Cause and Effect because it helped me notice how each of Professor Herbert’s actions had an effect on Pa’s attitude. Professor Herbert’s actions caused Pa’ to change. His action had a big effect on Pa’s views.

a. Professor Herbert is educated; he wears a suit to school. He doesn’t believe in corporal punishment for a kid of Dave’s age. He talks in order to settle disputes and exchanges ideas with his students. He believes that students can learn from reading, writing and also from discovering and going on outings.

Pa’ didn’t get a formal education. He has spent all his life working in the farm to provide for his many children. Pa’s clothes are worn out and out of fashion. He wears overalls, his boots are old and his shirt collar shows. His hands are rough. He believes his children need to listen to him until they are 21 years old. He believes in corporal punishment. He thinks that in a good school, children sit, read and write; outings are just for fun.

Even though Pa’ and Professor Herbert are very different, they are similar when it comes to Dave. Both Pa’ and Professor Herbert are interested in Dave’s education. They care about him and want him to be responsible and respectful. They both expect Dave to be honest, respect others and pay his debts. They want Dave to have a better future and be a good person.

b. I used the Compare and Contrast to check what things were different and which things were similar. Pa’ and Professor Herbert act and react differently. Both Pa’ and Professor Herbert want Dave to have a good life.

Part C: Bridging Text and Context (20 points)

The farmers in Kentucky in the 1930’s were less modern that the people in bigger cities in America. These farmers were uneducated. This is because it took a few generations get schools in Kentucky. When the children of these farmers grew up and became adults, they had three choices about where to live: they could stay in the farm, they could move away or they could move to the city and come back again (which is what Jesse Stuart did). Adapted from http://library.thinkquest.org/TQ0310443/Appalachian%20Culture.htm

1. Explain what the new information means

2. How does it connect to the story?

3. Bring in an example from the story to support the connection

4. Write a concluding sentence

Some places in the United States became cities and others stayed as rural areas. The farmers

were poor and their children worked in the farm from an early age. In the beginning, there were no

schools in the Appalachian Mountains. After many years, schools were built. By then children of the

farmers had more choices. They could stay in the mountains, go to the city or study in the city and

come back to the mountains later on.

This information connects to our story because the characters are examples of people who had

different paths in their lives. In the story we meet Mr. Sexton, a farmer who wasn’t able to continue his

education past the elementary level. He worked the farm and raised a family. He wants his son Dave to

go to High School so he can have a better future. Professor Herbert is from the city (or went to the city

and came back) and is teaching the students in the High School. He teaches every day but does not

have to work the land day and night. For many, he represents a better future.

Just like Professor Herbert, the author is someone who was born in Appalachia. The author

went to the city, received a higher education and chose to come back to give to others the gift of a

better education. He came back to be a positive example for his people and teach the children in the

school. He became a great teacher, writer and role model for future generations.

Part B: Analysis and Interpretation Questions (60 points)1. Pa’ was angry about the way Professor Herbert had handled the situation with the cherry tree. He felt that it was unfair to punish Dave for not having money. He was also upset because the whole thing happened while the students were outdoors. In his opinion, they should have been in school learning how to read and write. He also though that he was sacrificing a lot to send Dave to school and that was not OK for the Professor to insult him.He wanted to take his gun to intimidate the professor and show him that even though he does not have a high education, he too has ways to deal with insults. He needed to show that he was not going to put up with nonsense, and that he wanted an explanation or else, he could even shoot him if necessary. (10 points)

2. Pa’ (and everyone else in the family) has a very hard life. There are many chores to be done and the day was long and difficult for all the farmers. Pa’ is doing his best to send Dave to school. He needs Dave to be considerate of his family and pitch in, do his share of the work. Not only that, he doesn’t want Dave to become a snub. He needs Dave to be grateful and helpful. (10 points)

3. (Positive opinion) I think Mom is calm and practical. She cares for Pa’ and Dave. She is strong and is not afraid to give her opinion. She has a different perspective on things: she thinks it is not worth for Pa’ to bring the gun to school and then be in trouble with the law. In my opinion, she keeps the family going because she is strong but also knows how to listen to Pa’s concerns and look out for him and her children.

(Negative opinion)Mom is raising many children and is scared of what will be. She knows that she can’t convince Pa’ not to go to school. She must be very worried about Pa’ being arrested for bringing a gun to school. The only thing she can do is tell him that he may get in trouble with the law and hope for the best. She must be really tired. Pa’ didn’t go to High School and I am pretty sure she didn’t either. So, she does not have a lot of choices. If something happens to Pa’, the whole family would have a really hard time. (10 points)

Extended HOTS Questions Question #1: (15 points)

Page 37: englishteachingwithcreativity.files.wordpress.com · Web viewMatch each word to its meaning in English. Use the word bank for your answers. bare dissect casual scum mighty frost overalls

a. I think Mom and Pa’ have a very nice relationship. They both work hard to provide and help

their children. In the little time they have in the evenings, they sit and She gives him advice not to get

in trouble but does not scream or tell him not talk. In the story, we see that Pa’ goes to talk to Mom

about what he intends to do in the school. to do it. So, I think there is respect between them. At the

end of the story, after Pa’ comes home from his visit to the school, he tells Mom all about the new

things he learnt. He tells that one day he will take her to the school and show her the germs, how

Professor Herbert is nice and that school is very different from how it was when they were kids. Pa’ is

not afraid of showing his tender side to Mom. He shares with her when he is upset and when he is

happy.

b. The HOTS I used to answer is Inferring. There are ways think of the whole idea behind what the words of the story say. For example, when Pa’ tells Professor Herbert not to kill the snake, you can see he has a very tender side to him. And when he tells Mom that he is going to bring the gun to school, maybe he is not sure about it and that’s why he tells her. I can read between the lines and understand more than what the text says.

Questions #2: (15 points)

a. I think that they have very different views of the world because they have different levels of education and live very differently.

Professor Herbert is an educated man; he knows how children learn and what works best to make them learn. He knows that physical punishment may not work as well as other methods. He has enough money to buy a suit and feels comfortable in his environment. He gets respect and people look up to him because he is a teacher. From where he is standing, life is moving at a fast pace and you can make choices that will get you to where you want to be. You can better your lot if you so choose.

Page 38: englishteachingwithcreativity.files.wordpress.com · Web viewMatch each word to its meaning in English. Use the word bank for your answers. bare dissect casual scum mighty frost overalls

Pa’ works in the farm, day in, day out. He still believes that things are as they were when he was a student. His lack of education keeps him back in time. From where he stands, you have to do all your chores, study hard and not waste any time.

Even though they are different, both men appreciate hard work, respect and honesty. And this, I think, is also about education because we learn how to behave from our parents. .

b. The HOTS I used for this question is Distinguishing Different Perspectives. This skill helps you see a situation from different points of view. You can put yourself in another person’s shoes and understand others better.
