“ I have reduced the carbon footprint in my server room, and while the size of my server room limits the amount of equipment we can have, I can now do more with the same space.” Richard Bance, IT systems coordinator, Burgmann Anglican School

“ We’ve found that students are more engaged with IT in the classroom and so we incorporate IT into our teaching methods. The projectors enable us to employ a dynamic approach to teaching and learning especially in language classes because you can visually explain many grammatical exercises.” Ben Harris, deputy head middle school, Burgmann Anglican School
When Burgmann Anglican School opened their Forde campus the school needed to ensure the IT infrastructure would allow them to connect the two campuses seamlessly and support the learning needs of the growing student population. Richard Bance, IT systems coordinator, Burgmann Anglican School, explains, “Our previous infrastructure was sized to meet the needs of the school approximately a year ago. However the school has since doubled in size and now has another campus. We needed a scalable IT solution that would support the increased size of the school and meet our demands for the next three to four years.”
Reduces server footprint while seamlessly connecting both campusesWith the role of IT within the school growing in importance, and IT provided in both classroom and lab environments, Burgmann Anglican School wanted a reliable solution with redundancy that would not expand the school’s server footprint while providing resilience for key systems. Burgmann Anglican School deployed Dell PowerEdge™ R710 servers with Intel® Xeon® Processors running VMware® vSphere™ 4 server software and a Dell EqualLogic PS 6010XV storage area network (SAN) connected by a 10GB storage fabric using PowerConnect™ 8024F switches.
The virtualized infrastructure is enabling IT management across both sites, as well as maximizing space requirements. Bance notes, “I have reduced the carbon footprint in my server room, and while the size of my server room limits the amount of equipment we can have, I can now do more with the same space.”
Scalable solution enables automation of administrative processes The school can scale resources quickly without adding more physical servers to meet demand. With the improved performance the school can expand the delivery of administrative functions such as payroll and school reports. Moreover, the SAN solution has built in features for creating snapshots for quick recovery to protect and recover data, ensuring that critical business services continue in the event of an infrastructure issue.
Burgmann Anglican School is a co-educational independent school
located in Gungahlin, Australia. The school comprises two campuses,
the Valley campus, which offers education for children in preschool
to Year 5 (aged 3-11 years) and in Years 9 to 12 (aged 14-19 years), and
the Forde campus, which offers education for children in preschool
to Year 2 (aged 3-8 years) and in Years 6-8 (aged 11-14 years). The
school employs 140 staff providing education to 1500 students.

Encourages dynamic student learning through interactive projectors in the classroomsBurgmann Anglican School has moved to standardize their IT infrastructure onto a single platform environment. All senior students make use of Dell Vostro™ 3550 laptops during class time, and at the Forde campus the middle school classrooms (Years 6 to 8) have Dell S500 Wireless Ultra Short-Throw Interactive Projectors installed.
The school wanted to implement projectors to encourage dynamic learning into the classroom. The teaching of language is one such subject that can be enhanced through the dynamic way information is presented using an interactive projector. Ben Harris, deputy head middle school, Burgmann Anglican School, explains, “We’ve found that students are more engaged with IT in the classroom and so we incorporate IT into our teaching methods. The projectors enable us to employ a dynamic approach to teaching and learning especially in language classes because you can visually explain many grammatical exercises.”
In conjunction with the school’s online learning management system, the interactive projectors are allowing staff and students to access school resources at any time and share work in the classroom, which is providing new ways of learning. Harris confirms, “Teachers can move freely around the
classroom using the stylus remote and increase student participation by allowing work to be shown from a student’s computer onto the screen. Student discussion about a subject that is displayed visually is much higher, and notes written on the screen can be printed out for the students to keep.”
Further integrates technology into students’ learning processes through reliable support Supported by Dell ProSupport™ with Next Business Day Onsite Response Service, Burgmann Anglican School can now plan for further integration of technology into the students’ learning process. The school has recently piloted and implemented a Dell Mobile Computing Station housing Dell Vostro 3550 laptops for senior students.
Due to the reliable service experienced through Dell, the school is able to extend the level of support they provide to their students in turn. “If I had a room full of spare parts, equipment and the staff, I still couldn’t provide the support level that we have now from Dell. The amount of equipment the school has may have increased, but the quality of service provided has remained the same. Dell Support Services are the best that I have experienced and through reliable onsite support I am assured that I can keep the school running,” Bance concludes.
