    CURRENT CHALLENGES OF A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER.

    As an English teacher, I am still learning and try to absorb the changes and

    challenges being an English teacher. Below are the common challenges that I faced

    after years being and English teacher in different schools:

    1.Teacher and Pupils.

    Pupils are our core, where we meet them everyday. A teacher in 21st century

    are totally different than the previous era. I discovered that nowadays pupils are

    advance in something that beyond the curriculum. Pupils in the classroom, pupils in co-

    curriculum and pupils in the society changed after several years in the education scene

    in Malaysia. In classroom, the rules and regulations (discipline) are no longer being

    focused by them and the teacher himself. Here I am not blaming to the teacher but it

    happened because of many factors. Teacher influenced by the new working

    environment where they had no time to give more attention in classroom

    management. Teacher enter the classroom and teach, sometimes they did not realize

    that several amount of pupils were not ready to learn. I am focusing on the pupils

    preparation (staionaries,books,motivation) where these pupils who broke the rules were

    increased. The other criteria is a big jumpof language proficiency between the slow

    learner and the advance learner. A teaching profession request us to teach as well as to

    enhance and to do the remedial activities in the classroom. It is some kind of burden for

    the teachers where they have to trace, record, take action and of course to teach the

    pupils. To do those items are really a tough challenge as a teacher. Pupils in rural area

    have a different story. They are still leave behind. They even do not know how to write

    their name. English for them is useless. They dont want to learn English, this is where

    a teacher must show their talent to attract the pupils attention and motivation to learn

    English. The question is, how am I going to encourage them to learn English? This

    question is always on my attention in my teaching profession. Especially for those

    teachers who teach in rural school where we have aborigine pupils in the school.

    English become a third language for them. As well as pupils who live in villages

    including estate, FELDA and other reconstructed land belongs to government and non-

    government sectors (new neighbourhood). Pupils and ICT tranformation is another

    challenge for me. Now, they have facility to access information. Sometimes, the know

    English better than the teacher who teach them. This happened among the advance

    pupils who come from a wealth family. They can afford those appliance such as a smart

    phone, I-book, notebook even mobile dictionary (BESTA dictionary). So, teacher has to

    improve and should be never leave behind as these pupils keep on enhancing their

    English proficiency.

    2.Teacher and Administration

    A teacher and administration is a normal thing in a teaching profession. The

    challenges are the documentations and how the management do their duties. We

    commonly hear about HEM, Ko KU and administration. A teacher can not run from

    this responsibility. Teacher and the pupils cater has a transformation where a school

    has their own application to keep the pupils information. The previous era, we used the

    KAD 001 and school registration book (commonly known as Buku Besar among

    teachers). Today we have SMM and other applications that we have to fill and

    complete the pupils details using those applications. They were provided by the

    Ministry of Education and supervised by the KPM. After that a teacher also has to

    manage the pupils charity where sometimes they give the money, guide their parents

    and manage all the pupils need in school.

    3. Teacher as a human.

    As a teacher, I also have weaknesses. I sometimes forgot the teaching

    contents in the classroom. It will affect my teaching in the classroom. Sometimes I

    cannot focus on my teaching as I am also a father, husband and a son. Being a Muslim

    English teacher is not that easy as being a child. The responsibility of a man English

    teacher is different in Malaysia. During P&P, I sometimes failed to control emotion

    when the pupils do something that disturbed my lesson. As a teacher I am not going to

    ruin the lesson but I have to run the lesson nicely. A balance and healthy emotion is

    important to an English teacher as I have to encounter many challenges to teach a

    different language where there is no native speaker in my pupils neighbourhood.

    4. Teacher and community.

    Basically we can divide this relationship into two. First, teacher and the school

    community like PIBG and the second one is teacher and their neighbourhood.

    Teacher and school community is a relationship between me as a teacher and the

    parents. Here I have to communicate and sometimes I joined a social programme

    organised by the school with cooperation among the parents. Teacher and their

    neighbourhood is a different thing where I build a relationship as neighbours in my

    living area. In this situation, normally I will talk about something out of the working

    environment and issue. A social development in the community is important where I as

    human who work and live in the community need a good and calm relationship. It is not

    that easy to take part in each community either in school community or in the neighbour

    hood. I have to do the extra classes, sports event and other programme organised by the

    school. It is compulsory to the teacher to get involve. Here, once again I have to spend

    the time correctly so that I can participate and develop a relationship between both

    communities.

    5. Teacher and the methodology.

    Talking about methodology is something familiar to me as a teacher. The

    challenges are to change the method and to absorb the new ideas of methodology

    and also to implement it in the classroom. In the beginning of my carrier in teaching,

    the uses ofIT is something unfamiliar in teaching. After a few years ICT is something

    common and me as a teacher has to improve my ICT skills. The teaching activities to

    the pupils with the ICT is also has to be improve. In a classroom where we have more

    than 30 pupils in a class, I have to organise the classroom management and change the

    method to be fair to all pupils who learn in different ways. Some pupils like to learn

    individually and some pupils like to learn in groups. To teach IT with varieties method

    (group/individual) take a high competence of a teacher.

    6. Enhancing the teaching profession.

    Our employer, organized and sent me to many courses in order to enhance my

    skills and sometimes to revise the curriculum. Participate the courses is a big challenge

    to me after I back to work. To implement the contents in the courses has their own

    challenge. In school the facilities are not as good as we have in the courses centres. I

    attended a few courses such as English Enhancing Programme for rural school,

    Troubleshoot courses and curriculum revise courses. There were many things that I had

    learnt. The challenge is how I am going to improve my proficiency if I am not

    motivated to do that I have to do somethingto make sure that I will back on track. To

    overcome these weaknesses once again I have to motivate myself to enhance my level

    of competence and proficiency in teaching.

    7. Teacher and transformation to ICT based.

    This challenge is all about the uses of IT application to my workas a teacher.

    Today, I have to uses many IT applications in my work. I can give an example, those

    applications are SMM, BMM, SISTEKS, SSDM, Sekolah Malaysia appilication, SAPS

    on others. Most people said that technology is to help. Based on my experience, yes IT

    is help but to make it complete and useful is not an easy work. As a teacherwho has to

    teach, check the pupils work, do remedial and extra classes it is a challenge to use all

    the applications and fill in the information in school . I sometimes did the same work

    twice. Those applications are for records and administration (pupils cater). In teaching

    I have to use other ICT application such as ICTL for year 4 and 5, zoom A and the

    Niexus. The challenge is I have to spend a lot of time to ensure the pupils skilful and

    eager to use this ICT base learning. Lately I use facebook application to teach my

    pupils. It is just another method that I took to teach my pupils using the ICT based.

    Based on those 7 challenges that I faced, I have to do something so that I will be

    a good teacher. I also discover that nowadays teachers are completely different than the

    previous era. I hope that our employees and administration know how to manage those

    things smoothly because to me if there are to many responsibilities in work it will affect

    my teaching competence. It is like a burden to me to do all those things infact I have to

    put my priority is teaching in the classroom. Teacher happiness is number one pupils

    come number two because if the teacher happy go to work they will be more efficient

    and produce a good working environment.
