LETTER

As I write this letter on one of the coldest days in recent memory I find myself counting down the days to spring. Traditionally, spring is the time of year we focus on cleaning. Cabin fever has been par-

ticularly challenging for me this winter, and so, in addition to the cleaning I am anxious to get outside and play. This is why I am excited to share with you some of the wonderful things to do around Bryn Mawr.

Recently, I have been frequenting the new Farmers’ Market located in the renovated Rosemont Square next to Gullifty’s. Featuring a great group of vendors, the market offers everything from exotic olive oils to a char-cuterie. You will also find great ethnic foods such as Chinese and Thai, as well as some great dessert options. For more information see http://rose-montfarmersmarket.com.

Of course, Bryn Mawr’s open-air Farm to City Market continues to offer fresh vegetables, breads, fruits, chocolates and more on select Saturday mornings in the lot directly across from Ludington Library. For more infor-mation about this wonderful organization and schedule please see http://www.farmtocity.org.

And speaking of open-air markets, this year Bryn Mawr welcomes the ev-er-popular Clover Market www.theclovermarket.com. Clover Market offers an eclectic array of antiques, crafts, vintage jewelry, original works of art, and more. Mark your calendars for Sundays April 26 and May 17 to experi-ence this unique market.

2015 also marks the ten year anniversary of the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. Over the past decade BMFI has accumulated a long list of well deserved ac-colades, including Best of Philly. Although BMFI now features more screens and titles than ever before, it is far more than just a theater. To see what I mean take a look at their website: www.brynmawrfilm.or .

I would like to give a special thanks to all of the local businesses for their support of this magazine along with the events and activities in town. A special thank you to Commissioner Scott Zelov and his team at Lower Mer-ion Township for their assistance in making it all happen.

So, get out there and enjoy all our town has to offer. And remember… Shop Local!

Sincerely,

Sincerely, Michelle BogosianBryn Mawr Business Association

If Lisa Willson DeNolfo had been introduced to George Bernard Shaw he might not have penned his famous maxim “He who can, does; he who cannot, teaches.” When she moved to Bryn Mawr from New York

in 2002 and founded the Willson Vocal Academy she was an internation-ally renowned soprano as well as a trained concert pianist, who had won much critical praise and numerous awards for the beauty and purity of her voice - including reaching the finals of the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition.

Her own educational qualifications are impeccable, with a Masters de-gree in vocal performance from the Manhattan School of Music, a per-forming member of the Juilliard Opera Center and further training in opera at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. She has sung leading roles in Opera Houses throughout the world and was the soloist in a PBS pro-duction of Verdi’s Requiem Mass with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra.

Her mother, Lucille Willson, noticed her connection to music when she was still in her crib “she had perfect pitch and would pick up a candlestick as a microphone and perform for us before she was in pre-school.” Lisa’s family are successful wheat farmers in Colfax, Washington and her hard work ethic and teaching philosophy stems from her upbringing. Her par-

ents survived the depression and lived their lives without waste and with a passion for their vocation that they passed on to their children. Her father, Bill Willson, was a steward of the land - Lisa remembers driving down the road in their pickup and her father would pull over and tell her to “look at the 90 over there” meaning the 90 acres in front of them. Lisa would ask him “why are you always looking at dirt?” She didn’t understand it at the time but she does now. “My 90 is my students,” she says. Although an avid gardener, she has found her true vocation in performing and teach-ing, “when you finally find your passion, it all makes sense.

Her parents, who filled their farmhouse with the great sounds of the 40’s and 50’s, nurtured and encouraged Lisa’s love of music. She started her professional career at age 22 as a lead singer with The Lionel Hampton Or-chestra and her professional repertoire includes jazz as well as opera – two genres that are the most challenging both technically and intellectually. Her wide vocal repertoire helps her to find the right fit for her students, although her primary focus for teaching young singers is vocal health and discipline as training at a young age can be precarious to immature vocal cords.

Lisa’s pupils are a testament to the success of her teaching philosophy. Willson Vocal Academy students are cast not just in the lead roles in pro-ductions at our local high schools (currently at Academy of Notre Dame De Namur, Agnes Irwin, The Baldwin School, Conestoga High School, Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Devon Prep, Episcopal Academy, Friends Central, Great Valley, Harriton High School, The Haverford School, Malvern Prep, Merion Mercy Academy, Radnor High School and Middle School, Rosemont School of the Holy Child, St Joe’s Prep, The Shipley School and Welsh Valley Middle School) they have also won lead roles in regional pro-fessional theaters such as the Walnut Street Theater, the Media Theater and Wolf Performing Arts and have toured with national Broadway pro-ductions as well as appearing on national television and winning in the col-lege admittance stakes. Her recent graduates are studying and performing at Barnard, Berklee College of Music, Boston Conservatory, Brown, Colum-bia, Drexel, Harvard, Manhattan School of Music, MIT, NYU, University of Pennsylvania, Temple, University and Wellesley College.

“I build trust with my students, I try to attend all their performances as I think the teenage years are a formidable time for self esteem. It is a crucial

period, a bridge between childhood and adulthood, and one of my goals is to keep my students centered. I look at their holistic health as well as their vocal health; they are learning how to define their identity and if they can communicate their thoughts and opinions through their voice and gain self confidence and public performing skills at this vulnerable time it serves them well in life.”

The performance opportunities and community outreach programs Lisa creates for her students helps foster this confidence, and also helps her students to learn the value of giving back to their community. She organizes concerts at local retirement centers, Bryn Mawr Day, the Bryn Mawr Twilight Concert Series, and at the New Leaf Club. Her husband, Ian DeNolfo, who has performed as a leading tenor soloist throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, assists her with the sound and lighting from his company Lion Media Creations. Ian also teaches at the Academy and at their summer Vocal Boot Camp. “We make a good team,” Lisa said.

BEHIND AND BEYOND THE OSCARS: A CONVERSATION WITH CHERYL BOONE ISAACS – Friday, March 20, at 7:00 pmThe Academy comes to BMFI with a visit from Cheryl Boone Isaacs, current president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The firstAfrican-American to hold the office and only the third wom-an, Boone Isaacs entered the film industry in 1977 as a staff publicist at Columbia Pictures working on Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Quickly ris-ing through the ranks, she be-came a top-level marketing ex-ecutive for Paramount Pictures and orchestrated campaigns for films like Forrest Gump and Braveheart. In 1997, she became the first black woman to head a major studio’s mar-keting operation when she joined New Line Cinema. After leaving New Line, she has con-sulted on critically acclaimed

LIVINGfilms and blockbusters alike, such as Spider-Man 2, The Artist, and The King’s Speech. Boone Isaacs will discuss what goes on behind the scenes of the Oscar process and the Academy, as well as her fascinating career. This intimate conversation will be moderated by former Paramount Pic-tures Executive Vice President and Movie Tavern CEO John Hersker. The audience will also have a chance to pose questions to the Hollywood trail-blazer at the end of the evening. BMFI has been host to many luminaries in its ten year history, and is hon-ored to add Cheryl Boone Isaacs to the roster, which includes Sir Ben Kings-ley and director David Lynch, in its 10th anniversary year. Behind and Beyond the Oscars: A Conversation with Cheryl Boone Isaacs will be held on Friday, March 20, at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $25.00 for general admission, and $20.00 for BMFI members.

DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB – Thursday, March 26, at 7:00 pmWhen a deranged Air Force general gives an unauthorized order to attack the Soviet Union, the laughs are on high alert in this jet-black satire. Just as sharp today as when it was first released, Stanley Kubrick’s black comedy was the first repertory film ever shown at BMFI. Commemorate the inau-gural event with a screening projected from a beautiful 35 mm print. Dr. Strangelove will show on Thursday, March 25, at 7:00 pm.

OPEN SCREEN MONDAY: ANNIVERSARY EDITION – Monday, April 6, 8:00 pmFree event! Bryn Mawr Film Institute invites area filmmakers to screen their films at our theater—just bring your film in DVD format, and we’ll run it on the BIG SCREEN. Admission and praise (or criticism) from your peers will all be offered free of charge. This is an exciting forum for Philadelphia-area filmmakers and an enjoyable event for non-filmmakers who are interested in seeing local work. Since the very beginning, Bryn Mawr Film Institute has welcomed local filmmakers for the monthly Open Screen Monday events, screening hun-dreds of completed shorts and works-in-progress for an avid audience. In honor of BMFI’s 10th Anniversary, this special edition of Open Screen Monday will take place at 8pm and feature professional feedback from producer Andrew M. Karasik, instructor of BMFI’s From Pitch to Premiere: The Movie Business course. Make sure to bring your best work!

LIVING

Tweak of Nature, the 11th annual Betsy Meyer Memorial Ex-hibition, features the 2015 winners of the Meyer Family Award for Contemporary Art: Seunghwui Koo (New York), Tasha Lewis (New York), and Kate Stewart (Philadelphia). The exhibition hosts photo-based con-structions, whimsical sculpture, large scale paintings, and site-specific installation. Manipulating and tweaking our perception of nature and its creatures, these artists create new beings and realities that surprise, challenge, and delight. Visit www.mainlineart.org for info about accompanying workshops for families and adults.

AN EVENING WITH LEE GRANT – Wednesday, April 22, 5:30 pmActress, activist, wife, mother, director, author: Lee Grant has played many roles during her storied life. Born Lyova Haskell Rosenthal in New York City, she enjoyed early success on stage and screen following her education at the famed Neighborhood Playhouse, earning an Academy Award nomi-nation by age 24 for her role in Detective Story. But everything came to a sudden halt after she landed on the Hollywood blacklist and her job pros-pects all but dried up, leaving her professionally stymied for 12 years. Mi-raculously, Grant eventually overcame the odds and rebuilt her career with a starring role on TV’s Peyton Place, followed by memorable performances in films like Valley of the Dolls, The Landlord, In the Heat of the Night, and Shampoo. Unafraid of any challenge, Lee Grant also made waves in the typically male-dominated field of film directing, ultimately earning an Academy Award (her second!) for her 1986 documentary Down and Out in America. Learn more about this fearless, fascinating woman during an intimate conversation and audience Q&A moderated by BMFI board member and former Paramount Executive Vice President John Hersker.

DINING

Cerise features contemporary European cuisine inspired by Chef Ben & his wife Elena Thomas’ time abroad and love of open-air markets. The dishes highlight the lighter, modern, side of European cuisine, and the diversity of flavors found across the region’s varied landscapes, from fresh made pastas to seasonal game. The name ‘Cerise’ is inspired by cherry season, marking the most abundant time of year for Europe’s farms. Cerise is a BYOB and offers seasonal prix fixe menus, with several options for each course. The Thomas’ goal is to bring the European social ritual of dining to the Main Line, inviting friends and family to make time to enjoy each other’s com-

pany over a lovingly prepared meal and their favorite bottle of wine.

Our pasta course, always a high-light for our guests, and the current campanelle with brussels sprouts is hands down our most popular menu item. People used to shy away from brussels sprouts, but when paired with the tartness of dried cherries and the salty richness of guanciale, the bitterness in the brussels sprouts is mellowed and all the flavors really meld togeth-er. And of course it helps that we make all our own pastas in house!

Restaurant Cerise

Campanelle with Brussels Sprouts, Guanciale, Dried Cherries and Truffle Serves 4

12oz campanelle pasta

20 pieces brussels sprouts

4oz guanciale or pancetta

2 oz tart dried cherries

2 cloves garlic, minced

4 egg yolks

1/4 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon white truffle oi

some fresh chopped herbs - parsley,

chives, chervil

1. Dice the guanciale and render the

fat in a saute pan over a medium low

flame. Drain and keep the fat.

2. Cut the base off each brussels sprout

and quarter them. Toss in a little olive

oil and salt and roast in a 450 oven for

10 minutes until mostly cooked through

and the outer leaves are nicely colored.

3. Whisk together the egg yolks, cream,

and truffle oil.

4. Bring a large pot of salted water to

the boil. Cook the pasta until al dente

(this will vary depending on the type of

pasta you use).

5. In a large saute pan, heat 1 tablespoon

of the rendered guanciale fat. Add the

garlic and cook for 1 minute. Increase

the heat to high and add the quartered

brussels sprouts, guanciale pieces, and

dried cherries.

6. Add the pasta directly from the

boiling water into the saute pan. Add

1/2 cup of the pasta water as well.

While swirling the pan, Add the egg

yolk mixture. Constantly moving the

pan and stirring the ingredients will

ensure the eggs don’t scramble. Once

the sauce has thickened slightly (about

1 minute), taste for seasoning and add

the chopped herbs. I like a fresh ground

black pepper to finish o f the plate.
