President’s Message Welcome to our 93rd annual Melfort Music Festival! Well, we sure have had quite the year! I’m so encouraged to see that when other extra-curricular activities are limited, music has been able to continue during this time. I am thankful that my parents motivated me to take lessons when I was younger so that today, I can sit at my piano and play for enjoyment, comfort and escape. My 12 years of lessons have resulted in a lifetime of reward. May you also feel the reward of your efforts this festival. “Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.” - Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) I hope each one of you will persevere with your music and find enjoyment in the journey. Piano Olivia Adams

Olivia Adams is a writer, presenter, and performer and her research has taken her all over the country and abroad. She is a frequent solo musician in her home communities, and has performed recitals in Portugal, Winnipeg, Owen Sound, London and Saskatoon. Olivia also plays in the Adams and Busch Piano Duo and they have performed recitals in London and Owen Sound, ON. Olivia holds an HBMus in Piano Performance form the University of Western Ontario, and is continuing on in an MA in Piano Pedagogy and Women’s Studies at the

University of Ottawa. She is a ORMTA and CFMTA certified teacher, as well as an Elementary Specialist with a certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Olivia has 7 years of teaching experience and enjoys sharing her love of music with her piano students. She has experience teaching beginners to ARCT level pianists and thrives to create a supportive and welcoming environment for her students to learn and grow as musicians. Olivia encourages her students at recitals, RCM exams, Festivals, and community performances.

Strings Anna Marie Bekolay

(BMusEd, ARCT)

Anna Marie Bekolay is a soprano, violinist, teacher and adjudicator. She performs with many ensembles in and around Saskatoon and runs Anna Bekolay’s Studio teaching Voice, Violin, Recorder, and Fiddle. In 2006, she received a gold medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music for the highest mark in the country on her Associate Diploma exam in Voice Performance. Currently, Anna is working on several projects which include a classical vocal album in collaboration with Deborah Buck, and uses the stage name, Anna Maria Soparlo. Some of these works include Songs in Loving Memory of My Father (2017), Back of the Bus (Celtic), The Stephanies (Pop/Folk), The Whiskey Jerks (Klezmer/Folk/Jazz), Mac Talla Quartet (Classical/Pop/Folk), and Troubadours du Bois (Renaissance).

Speech Arts, Vocal & Musical Theatre Ron de Jager

A native of Nova Scotia, Ron de Jager is Professor of Music and Voice at Briercrest and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance degree from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. Additionally, he serves as a sessional voice instructor for the University of Regina. Recent research and recitals have focused on nationalistic Canadian vocal music. In May of 2013 he started Briercrest Summer Stage where he serves as Artistic Director. In

2012, Dr. de Jager had the honor of singing for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall at the Legislative Assembly in Saskatchewan commemorating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The ceremony was broadcast nationally on CBC and CTV. At the request of the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, he was the guest soloist at the inauguration of Pier 21 on Canada Day 2000. Ron has enjoyed performing opera, oratorio, solo recitals, musical theatre, film and ballet. Recent performances include Bob in Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief, an all-German recital with Dr. Laura Loewen (University of Manitoba), Matthew in Anne of Green Gables and the role of Cosme McMoon in Souvenir. Ron has performed as a recital soloist in Canada, the United States and the Netherlands and enjoys collaborating and performing with his talented wife, pianist Elena de Jager. He also enjoys serving as a masterclass clinician and vocal adjudicator and has adjudicated festivals and competitions in

Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Virginia. The primary accomplishment of great voice teachers is to teach singers to realize their potential, thus creating outstanding, thoughtful and convincing performers. Dr. de Jager is committed to helping singers reach their potential by tailoring the holistic process (technically and musically) to each individual, recognizing that each instrument is unique.
