SarabandePerformance Notes
This is a three part composition, playable by any combination of instruments. Each individual page includes all three parts.
The first line can be played by a soloist or the entire group. At measure 5, the three part harmony begins.
It works well to have students learn all three parts together in unison before breaking up into parts.
Some students may be playing in the key of Concert A flat for the first time, so the “extra” flat has been included (in parentheses) whenever it occurs.
After the class can play through the three parts, it is recommended that the class be split up into small groups of three to six students, and asked to prepare a performance for the class. All musical instructions, phrasing, dynamics, etc. have been deliberately omitted, to allow each group to make their own musical decisions. These include: 1) which instruments will be playing the melody, harmony and bass line 2) dynamics 3) articulations (tonguing and slurring) 4) tempo 5) style 6) music effects such as crescendos, decrescendos, and ritards. 7) phrasing and breathing spots 8) use of percussion instruments and anything else that you feel would make a better performance. Experiment and be creative.
From the give and take within each group should come many different idea about how this music can be played. All of these are correct, and each performance should be unique.
A word about the “sarabande” - the traditional sarabande is a slow, stately dance in triple meter (any meter or time signature in which there are three basic beats per measure, such as 3/4 or 3/8). Technically, then, this is not a true sarabande, however the 6/8 time signature keeps the feeling of a division of 3 in the pulse. The origin of the sarabande is not known, but is thought to have come from Spain.
