Enrichment Day 2008 Is a Smashing Success Enrichment Day 2008 Is a Smashing Success Enrichment Day 2008 Is a Smashing Success Enrichment Day 2008 Is a Smashing Success Enrichment Day 2008 Is a Smashing Success Diana Riordan and Meghan Newcombe EDT Staff Writers PLYMOUTH – More than 200 stu- dents participated in the 24th annual Enrichment Day at West Elementary School on Saturday. Enrichment Day is a day students gather in the school to get involved in many fun activities that are run by parents, coaches, and older students. Children participated in the Webkinz Tea Party, a spa treatment, football and baseball classes. Tracy Riordan, the boss of En- richment Day, provided us an exclu- sive interview while registering all children and helpers for Enrichment Day. Riordan said her favorite part of Enrichment Day was seeing all the kids coming in and walking to the gym. Her least favorite part is get- ting all the late registrations. She mentioned that the day would not be successful without the help of Mrs. Brocklesby, Mrs. Quinn, Mrs. McBride, Ms. Botto, Mrs. Mullen and Ms. Rothberg. Riordan says that the most popu- lar workshop is Webkinz Tea Party. Students said they loved the Bubble Show run by Keith Johnson. Johnson has performed his shows for 22 years since 1986. He put a student in a full body bubble and students applauded wildly. Katie Cappulicci, a fourth-grader, said “I loved the Bubble Show and I want him to come back next year.” Everybody had an awesome time at Enrichment Day and learned many new skills. Mr. Dwayne Follette ran the sessionon baseball, which was once again oneof the most popular workshops offeredduring West Elementary School’s En-richment Day. A total of 29 kids en-rolled (15 in session A and 14 in sessionB) to sharpen their skills before springbaseball season gets started. It was a coldday, but the kids were able to get outsideand play.

This is the 8th time that Mr Follettehas run the baseball workshop, and ev-ery year he hopes that the kids have funlearning to play. Mr. Follette has a lot ofexperience coaching baseball; he hasbeen the head coach at Plymouth NorthHigh School for 14 years.

Mr Follette brought KeeganGrabhorn, Corey Coleman, Joe Brigida,Evan Martinson, and Jared Canney withhim to help run the workshop. All ofthem are players on the Plymouth NorthHigh School team.

Chris Ferante signed up for baseballbecause “I love it so much and I practiceit with my dad.” Joe Buckely had a greattime and he learned to play soft toss.

Mr. Follette said he would like kidsto remember that family comes first;school comes second; and then comes

baseball.The students at West Elementary are

lucky to have people like Mr Follette,who are willing to volunteer their timeand talents so that the kids can have agreat Enrichment Day experience.

Fifth-grade student ColinO’Connor takes a breather fromthe intense action.

Coach Bill Burkhead ran the sessionon football. A total of 16 kids enrolledin session A and 11 in session B to learnplays and to play tag football.

This is the second time that coachBurkhead has run this workshop, and hehopes that the kids have fun learninggood sportsmanship and to play football.Coach Burkhead has a lot of experiencewith football: he played in high schooland college, and he has been coachingfor 16 years.

He enjoys being involved in Enrich-ment Day because it allows him to teachkids about football and he loves to workwith kids.

Nick signed up for football becausehe likes to learn new football skills. Hesaid, “It is a fun sport to play!”

It is so great that Coach Burkheadwould use his Saturday to come teachkids to play football! I could tell that thekids were all having a great time. Thankyou so much to Coach Burkhead and allthe football players from North HighSchool for coming.

Future Eagles await instruction from Coach Coffin

Mr. Coffin ran the session on bas-ketball. A total of 34 kids enrolled (17in session A and 17 in session B). Dur-ing the session Mr Coffin taught dribblingand he also had exciting shooting games.

Mr Coffin,Shawn and John hope thatthe kids have fun learning. Nick M. hasa lot of experience with basketball; healready learned a lot with basketball. Heenjoys being involved in Enrichment Daybecasue it allows him to play his favoritesport.

Justin C singed up for basketball toenjoy himself. Justing has so much fun;he enjoyed having his neighbor helpingthroughout the lesson

Lillian B. also was in the basketballsession. One of the things Lillian haslearned is how to bounce a basketball.She picked it becasue she did not know

that much about the exciting sport. Shehad an aswesome time.

We thank Mr. Coffin for his timeand for being a great teacher.

Mr. John Riordan ran the seesion onfloor hockey. A total of 13 kids enrolledin session B. This was the 10th year thatMr Riordan has been running floorhockey. He joked that floor hockey isfor those not athletic enough to play bas-ketball.

Mr. Riordan gets involved with En-richment Day because he loves to helpkids. He hopes that kids walk away learn-ing the basic skills, good sportsmanship,and how to have fun. During the ses-sion, Mr. Riordan lets the kids just playinstead of teaching them the game.

Mr Riordan loves to watch kids shar-ing his love of floor hockey. Andrew says,“I signed up for floor hockecy because I

like to play.” His teammate Nick said,“I am having a fantastic time at floorhockey.” Mr. Riordan sure runs a greatworkshop!

Mr Riordan didn’t have any helpers

to run his workshop and he still took timeto talk to me. He had to Simultaneouslycoach the kids, keep the game under con-trol, and somehow took part in this in-terview. Thank you Mr. Riordan!

Lauren Hess, 18, ran the sessionon gymnastics. She is part of theNational Honor Society in school,and having it be required to run aworkshop at Enrichmnet Day,Lauren thought it would be perfect torun this workshop, for she loves work-ing with children, and is deeply in-volved with this sport. A total of 11kids enrolled in Session A, and 10 insesssion B to just have a good timewhile learning th basic skills of gym-nastics.

This is the first time that Laurenhas run, not only this work shop, butany workshop, and she hopes that thekids have fun learning. Lauren has alot of experience with gymnastics. Shehas been involved with this interstingand dangerous sport for about 13years, learning and teaching gymnas-

Jen Brown ran the workshop ses-sion on dancing at Enrichment Day,where many kids decided to learn thebasics of this cool sport. A total of 16kids enrolled (9 in session A and 7 insession B) to learn a few cool dancemoves.

Since it is dancing, rhythm is im-portant. According to Jen, it is pos-sible to teach rhythm, but it is some-times hard to do. She plans to do

Mrs. Rothberg, Mrs. Newcombe,and Mrs. Belanger ran the session onspa/lotion/lip balm. Twelve kids en-rolled in session A and 13 in sessionB to have a day to themselves andexperience real fun and and beautyfor 1 day.

This is the second time that Mrs.Newcombe has run this workshop,and she hopes that the kids have funlearning how to have a day to them-selves and relax. She got the idea forthis workshop by doing this for herdaughter’s, Michaela’s, birthday.

She enjoys being involved in En-richment Day because it allows herto spend some time with the girls.

Allison Gordon signed up for theworkshop to have a day for herself

and to hang out with her friends. Shehad fun, “I think it was a good way tohelp me relax and spend more timewith my friends, I really enjoyed thisworkshop.”

This is the fourth time thatAmanda has run this workshop, andshe hopes the kids have fun learningart, making door hangers, and mak-ing silly putty. Amanda has a lot ofexperience making door hangers; shelovers desiging her own. She has beeninvolved in Enrichment Day becauseit allows her to help children and showthem how much fun this workshopis!

Ryan Hurley signed up for Cre-ative Crafts to make silly putty anddoor hangers. She had a funny quote,“Silly putty is awesome, and I am sodoing this at home!”

From what I have heard, thisworkshop seems pretty cool!

I would like to thank Amanda andall of her friends for doing this work-shop; this children seemed like theywere having a blast. These girls arepart of the National Honors Society.Great job everyone!

This is the first time that Mrs.Brocklesby has run this workshop,and they hope that the kids have funlearning. Mrs. Brocklesby and Mrs.McBride have a lot of experience withWebkinz and she got the idea becausetheir own kids liked it and theythought others would too.

Mr. Riordan ran the session onpinewood derby (racing). A total of34 kids enrolled (14 in session A and20 in session B) to race their creations.

This is the third time that Mr.Riordan has run the workshop, andhe hopes that the kids fave fun learn-ing .how to build cars. Most of thekids had a lot of experience with pin-ewood derby cars.

Mr Riordan enjoys being involvedin Enrichemnt Day because it allowshim to make his son P.J. happy.

Matthew Irving, 10, signed up forpinewood derby because he enjoyedit last year. Matt had fun making and

racing his car.Andrew, 9, signed up for pin-

ewood derby because he has an in-terest in cars. He claims he is havinga great time.

Tyler, 7, signed up for pinewoodderby because he thought it would befun. He said he had a great time

builing and constructing his own car.Suprisingly he wants to go just me-dium not fast.

This is the first time that KellyMontolio has run this workship andshe hopes that the kids had fun learn-ing! Mrs. Montolio said, “I’m glad tohave a daughter now so I can do thesefun things with her! Denise ran the session on garden-ing. A total of 14 kids enrolled in ses-sion B to paint and decorate pots,make silk flowers, and plant plants.

This is the second time thatDenise has run this workshop, andshe hopes that the kids have fun learn-ing. Denise has a lot of experienecewith gardening. Her secret to ahealthy garden is “You have to payattention to it, and make sure it hasenough water and sunlight. Her fa-vorite things to grow are tomatoes andcucumbers.

Flip-Flops and Beading, and so didAllison Vario and Jessie Hodgson.Alex Brunstrom, a volunteer says youmake the flip-flops by taking ribbonsand tying them to the top of the flip-flops. Jessie Hodgson says, “I signedup for this workshop last year and thisyear because it was so much fun.” Ialso heard that everyone had a greattime and will definitely be wearing

their flip-flops and accessories thissummer on the beach.

Thank you so much to Kellymontolio, Alex Brunstrom and Shan-non Lloyd for helping out with thisworkshop; the kids had a wonderfultime beading and making flip-flops fora wonderful time on the beach thissummer.

This is the first time that Ms. Silviahas run this workshop, and she hopesthat the kids have fun learning.

Nick has a lot of experience withsensational science and enjoys beinginvolved in Enrichment Day becauseit allows him to have fun with hisfriends and instructor.

Jeffrey signed up for sensationalscience to have fun with his friends.Nick had fun; their favorite experi-ment wsa crushing a potato. Thankyou Ms. Silvia for helping the stu-dents.

Sarah Riordan ran the session onvolcano erupting. A total of 12 kidsenrolled in Session A.This is the firsttime that Sarah has run this workshop,and she hopes that the kids have funlearning. Sarah got involved becauseher mother is running EnrichmentDay.

Sarah is going to help the kidsbuild the volcanoes and make themerupt.

Dennis signed up for volcanoeserupting to do something exciting.Aaron had fun “doing science.” Stu-dents said “I wish I were the volca-noes.” Many of the kids have said thatvolcanoes were their life.

Jack Colbert is making a 3-Dpyramid. He learned that 15 metalblocks weighed about 5 tons. ChrisMcGloin likes to Travel To Egyptbecause he can learn about Egypt.

Peter McCrae ran the session onkarate. A total of 28 kids (16 in ses-sion A and 12 in session B) enrolledto learn karate.

Mr. McCrae stressed that karateis not about fighting; it is about self-control. Mr. McCrae has a lot of ex-perience with karate; he has beenteaching it for 35 years.

In this workshop, the kids willstart with a warmup then learn kataand some of the history.

Kleo Silvia signed up for karatebecause she thought it would be cool,and she had a fun time. I had funtalking to Mr McCrae.
