Innovative microscope technology from ATMOS for intuitive, reliable viewing

One exhibit which attracted a great deal of attention at the 13th International Conference on CochlearImplants and Other Implantable Auditory Technologies in Munich this year, was the ‘ATMOS i View 31 Pro’, aspecial microscope for use in cochlear surgery from the company Atmos Medizintechnik. Participants in theconference ‘Temporal Bone Lab’ also worked with i View Microscopes and gained a practical impression oftheir excellent visual and operating qualities. Dr John Martin Hempel, Chief Consultant at Munich University’sGroßhadern Clinic, sums up his impressions: “The depth of focus and the marvellous light provided by thismicroscope are definitely outstanding. With other – considerably more expensive – microscopes, surgeonsalways have to be aware of the danger of overheating and damaging tissues when using the full lightingcapacity. With the Atmos microscope, this restriction simply no longer applies.”

Professor Dr Susan Arndt, Consultant at the ENT University Clinic,Freiburg (Head of the Outpatient Operating Center, Deputy Head, CochlearImplant Section), is impressed by the Atmos i View’s 3-dimensionality andpraises the microscope’s simplified design and its ease of handling.

Atmos CEO Peter Greiser says: “The i View stands for a new generation ofmicroscopes. Many specialists have told us that it exactly fulfils their needs.”

ATMOS i View PRO uses state-of-the-art LED technology. Thanksto the high light intensity, the operation field is much more brightlyilluminated, without any warming of the tissues.

The microscope enables the adaption of digital cameras and canalso be equipped with an integrated video camera and can beconnected up to endoscopy cameras.

Atmos has designed every aspect of the i View PRO with anoptimum user workflow in mind. As well as its optical qualities, users praised the beautifully smooth movement of the mechanics.

Easily gain confidence during cochlear implant surgery

Intraoperative recordings during cochlear implant surgery create confidence that the implant is stimulating theauditory nerve. So far, such intraoperative recordings required long cables, a PC and complex software tooperate.

With the Cochlear™ Nucleus® CR220 Intraoperative Remote Assistant users can now gain the confidence atthe press of a button. The handheld device which wirelessly connectsto the sound processor is very easy to operate.

Within minutes the Nucleus CR220 measures electrode imped-ances, captures a full T-NRT profile and allows users to observe thestapedius reflex. The recorded data can easily be exported to CustomSound® to support sound processor fitting. For further information contact: Cochlear AG, EMEA Headquarters, Tel: +41 61 205 04 04, Email: [email protected]: www.cochlear.com

Oticon platinum sponsors at BAA 2014

Oticon will once again welcome back Douglas L Beck to deliverthree exciting new presentations at BAA 2014. Dr Beck will inspireaudiences with clinical useful insights from the latest peer-reviewedliterature, on two themes.

Dr Beck will present in Parallel Session 4 on Paediatric Fittings in2014. Reflecting on how many paediatric audiologists tend to fitamplification based on textbooks written decades ago, he will thendiscuss the dramatic changes to date. Based on independentauthors, he will explore what the contemporary literature (2010 to2014) says about noise reduction, adaptive directionality, extended bandwidths, adaptivecompression, FM, cochlear implants and more.

In the Sponsors Track, Dr Beck will present in two parts on Issues in Invisible HearingLoss. In Part One: ‘Invisibility and Audiograms’, he will explore the real acoustic world inrelation to the audiogram and address the spectral differences between speech and music.Revealing why an audiogram (in isolation) doesn’t tell us all we need to know to addresshearing and listening needs / demands related to invisible hearing loss, he will also reviewand address the usefulness of ‘Familiar/Common Sound Audiograms’. Exploring issuesrelated to invisible hearing loss in children, he will also reveal the role of reflex testing in allchildren and those suspected of ANSD.

In Part Two, Dr Beck will present on ‘Managing Invisible Hearing Loss’. Although theterm ‘invisible hearing loss’ may be relatively new, the hearing difficulties associated withinvisible hearing loss are well known to audiologists. He will address the technologies asso-ciated with improved ease of listening and address the importance of integrating the audi-tory and visual systems, maximising the signal to noise ratio and the importance of audi-bility, FM systems and remote microphone systems. S-Tones found to be more effective thanbroadband noise in reducing tinnitus

SoundCure has announced results of arandomised, multi-centre clinical studythat found S-Tones® to be effective atquiet volumes, and to be more effectivethan broadband noise in the reductionof tinnitus.

The study, commissioned bySoundCure and conducted by leadingtinnitus researchers at three top audi-ology centres, compared tinnitusperception reduction betweenSerenade’s S-Tones and broadband noisesound, delivered at low volumes.Subjects listened to each treatment fortwo minutes. In those reporting a reduction in their tinnitus, 2.7 times(270%) more patients reported a greater tinnitus reduction with S-Tonesthan with white noise. In addition, the average tinnitus reduction was 1.9times (190%) greater for S-Tones compared to noise within two minutesof hearing the tones. Results were compared with previous data andconfirmed that even when played at what the patient perceives to be verysoft levels, therapeutic S-Tones offer greater tinnitus reduction than noise. Results were statistically significant (p<0.01).

Accordingly, the study concluded that S-Tones “are effective in morepatients than broadband noise maskers at reducing tinnitus loudness, andtherefore have the potential to be beneficial to a large segment of thetinnitus population.”

‘Amplitude Modulated “S-Tones” Can Be Superior to Noise for TinnitusReduction’ appears in September’s American Journal of Audiology(23(3):303-8).For further information contact: Soundcure,Web: www.soundcure.com

NHS Hearing Aid framework agreement: new products, technology and savings

NHS Supply Chain’s renewed Hearing Aid and Accessories framework agreement offers trusts high quality products and even better value. With approximately 3,600 product lines and eight suppliers on contract, NHS Supply Chain has an extensive range of hearing aid productscombining quality, choice and value.

The specification and process for the renewal tender were developed with input from the British Academy of Audiology (BAA).Will Brassington, President of the British Academy of Audiology (BAA) and part of the Audiology Advisory Group, said of the renewal:

“NHS Supply Chain was keen to ensure wide involvement in the process, to get the specification right, so we can continue to have highquality hearing aids at a low cost and to gain the benefits of innovation for our patients. A key part of this was the Audiology SuppliesGroup (ASG), now hosted by the BAA, which evaluated all of the technology tendered.”

As highly experienced and trained audiologists, the ASG independently reviewed, tested and approved all the products available on theframework.

“This huge undertaking, which took over 18 months of planning, resulted in a strong portfolio of technology being available at the bestglobal price, ensuring the best options for the hearing impaired community,“ explains Dawn Bramham, Chair of the ASG.

Tom Mason, Trading Manager for NHS Supply Chain, added: “Once again the clinical evaluation we had from the ASG, which includedvigilant testing of each hearing aid family and actual fit to patient trials, and the enhanced range will provide our customers with productsthey can trust.

“In addition, as a result of our investment and on-going efforts to secure savings and support the £150msavings challenge set by the Department of Health and the Cabinet Office, earlier this year we lowered the cata-logue price of hearing aid products, resulting in a £1.69m national saving.”For further information contact: NHS Supply Chain,Web: www.supplychain.nhs.uk/accountmanagers

New project encourages deaf children to take up swimming

Deaf children will have more opportunities to take up swimming, after a leadingdeaf children’s charity received £160,000 of funding from Sport England’s InclusiveSport Fund.

The National Deaf Children’s Society’s Deaf-Friendly Swimming Project is athree year programme that will work with swimming clubs, swim schools, leisurecentres and local authorities to deliver swimming programmes, specifically aimedat deaf children and young people.

Swimming is one of the sports deaf children say they most want to take partin, however hearing assistive technology such as hearing aids, must be removed. This combined with a noisy swimming pool environment and the need to under-stand coaches from a distance, can make swimming extremely difficult for deafchildren and young people.

Thomas Lyons, Sports Projects Manager at the National Deaf Children’sSociety, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have received funding from SportEngland. Too many deaf young people are being denied the opportunity to swimbecause many swimming providers don’t know how to meet their needs. Notonly is swimming a life-saving skill, great fun and fantastic for building confidence, the ability to swim opens up a whole world of water-based activities, such asscuba diving, rowing, surfing and sailing.

“Our resources and workshops will show swimming providers that by makingsmall and simple changes to swimming activities, such as using visual aids, swim-ming teachers and coaches can ensure that deaf young people have the same access to swimming as their hearing peers.”

The Deaf-Friendly Swimming Project is one of 44 schemes across England benefitting from Sport England funding. It is hoped the fundingwill create more opportunities for disabled people to play sport. For further information contact: Sarah Hemsted, Media Relations Officer, National Deaf Children’s Society,Tel: +44 (0)20 7014 1178, Email: [email protected] Web: www.ndcs.org.uk/me2
