Awards 2016

Awards Criteria

Any civil engineering project, stand-alone element of a project, team activity or education/training initiative may be entered for an Award, provided that:

■ In the case of a project, it is located in the geographical area covered by ICE West Midlands - Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire (except in the case of the Team Achievement Award, see below)

■ For the Team Achievement Award or Education Award, the teams are located in the ICE West Midlands area.

■ Projects must have been substantially completed during the 2015 calendar year.

■ Projects conform to the rules of entry set out in this pack.

The project may be promoted by any sector of the profession, and it may cover studies, research, development, design, project management, financial management, construction, maintenance or operation of schemes or any combination of the above.

The cost of all projects entered is not important.

Please clearly state on the application form the category(ies) into which you wish to enter your project. Projects may be submitted in more than one category.

Project Awards Categories

Submissions may be made in any of the following categories:

Sustainability AwardFor projects which can demonstrate outstanding environmental sustainability.

Innovation AwardFor projects which can demonstrate innovative techniques.

Heritage AwardFor projects which help contribute to the preservation of our heritage.

Partnership AwardFor projects which can demonstrate excellence in partnership or collaborative working.

Construction AwardFor projects which can demonstrate excellent construction techniques.

Communication AwardFor projects which demonstrate excellent communication of key themes and messages to their relevant audience.

Team Achievement AwardNominations are invited from teams of ‘in-house’ engineers with / or from other related professions involved in the delivery of civil engineering related practice which has demonstrated a significant contribution to society.

The team will have been / must be located in the geographical area of the West Midlands region as described above, however the subject / content of the nomination may be located anywhere in the world.

Geotechnical AwardThis will be awarded to projects or innovative geotechnical solutions delivered in the ICE West Midlands area.

Education AwardThis will be awarded to an individual or organisation for substantial contribution to civil engineering related training or education in the West Midlands region.

Young Achiever AwardThis award will recognise the outstanding achievement of a person, aged 30 years or under, who is employed within the civil engineering industry and lives or works in the West Midlands.

Presentation of Awards The winner(s) will be announced during the ICE West Midlands Annual Dinner, a black-tie evening event at the Birmingham ICC, on Thursday 26 May 2016.

ICE does not produce a shortlist of projects. All project entries receive coverage in the Awards Brochure/ Birmingham Post Supplement which is given out at the Awards Dinner.

Tables or places at the dinner can be booked on line at a cost £70 per place or £700 per table of 10. Details are given in the attached booking form.

Awards Judging

The Judges

The judging panel, chaired by a senior member of the profession, will comprise civil engineers and other professionals.

Judging

The judges will expect to see evidence that each project demonstrates excellence in some aspect and will take note of the quality of the project, value for money, and client satisfaction.

Other factors will be considered where appropriate, such as:

fitness for purpose; innovation;creativity, benefit to the community and environment; economy of materials and labour;aesthetics;time and productivity;value engineering and client care; management and teamwork;workmanship;health and safety; application of research findings;programming and performance.

Rules of Entry

Project Awards

1. The submission must include electronic versions of items 1-5 below:

■ Completed entry form. There is an entry fee of £50 + vat.

■ A summary, not exceeding 500 words, comprising a 150-word introduction which describes the project and continues with an explanation of why the project should be deemed to be one of excellence and precise reasons why it has been entered for a specific category. Any special features should be highlighted and attention drawn to aspects considered relevant for assessment.

2. The 150-word introduction will be reproduced in pre-event press releases, Birmingham Post coverage and the Awards brochure.

3. A maximum of six images of the project. The images should be in high resolution .jpg or .eps format (no less than 300dpi) and must not be embedded, nor contain any text or dates. One of the images will be used in the Awards Brochure and media publicity.

4. A project location plan.

5. Additionally, entries may be augmented by up to two drawings to illustrate important features of the project.

7. Each participating company/organisation associated with any successful entry and listed on the entry form will receive a certificate, while the lead company / organisation will also receive the award.

8. The judges have absolute discretion to reject any entry which does not comply with the requirements of the rules, or withhold any award from any entry - there can be no recourse against them or the sponsor. The judges’ decision shall be absolute, final and binding on all entries.

10. All computer generated and written material, drawings, plans and photographs submitted as part of an entry shall be the property of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

11. There is an opportunity for entrants to display one promotional pull-up banner in the pre-dinner drinks reception area.

12. Entries must be e mailed together with the completed entry fee form by 5.00 pm on Friday 25 March 2016.

13. Award winners will be entitled to use the ICE Award Winner logo to publicise their success.
