DESCRIPTION

‘Entrepreneur India’, a monthly magazine published by NPCS, is aimed at simplifying the process of choosing the suitable project for investment. It makes business decisions easier and trouble-free by providing a list of right projects for investment. Unique among project investment magazines, ‘Entrepreneur India’ is dedicated to the business of identifying sound investment projects. Every issue consists of a new list of projects which are meticulously selected by the NPCS team after being screened on various investment factors. NPCS team, before labeling a project as ‘Right investment’, studies various aspects of investment like product demand, market potential, raw material availability, suitable location, payback period, costs involved and breakeven point. The importance of project identification is known to less and many a times, entrepreneurs spend substantial time and resources on project planning, execution and control, while little attention is paid to project assessment and selection. Such times lead to disastrous business decisions and often a project is declared a ‘dead investment’. Most entrepreneurs, these days, have the capital but not the expertise to shortlist a suitable project to park their money. And ‘Entrepreneur India’ helps remove such hurdles for a businessman to ensure successful ventures and expansions. Correct project identification is a herculean task for any entrepreneur who is willing to expand or venture and he is often faced with the dilemma of identifying a suitable project that has minimum risk to his capital and has high growth potential. Through this journal we aim to educate and enlighten entrepreneurs about such projects and provide them with an updated list of profitable ventures with its project profile and project cost estimation (i.e. Plant Capacity, Plant & Machinery Cost, Working Capital, Total Capital Investment, Rate of Return and Break Event Point). Also, the magazine provides a snapshot of NPCS activities in a month. It includes brief profiles of several market research reports, project identification reports and books published by the company. The magazine has nationwide reach and a substantial readership. We at NPCS, ensure that business ventures and expansions happen but only in the right projects and at the right cost.http://www.niir.org/contact/entrepreneur.phtml?comments=We+wish+to+receive+our+free+copy+of+Entrepreneur+India

also a major early market. In time, aluminium grew indiversity of applications to the extent that virtuallyevery aspect of modern life would be directly orindirectly affected by its use.USESl Alclad : Aluminium products sometimes are

coated on one or both surfaces with ametallurgically bonded, thin layer of purealuminium or aluminium alloy. If cladding isanodic to the core, it is called Alclad. The claddingof Alclad products electrochemically protects thecore at exposed edges and at abraded or corrodedareas.

l Automotive Products : The automotive industryuses wrought aluminium for trim, bumpers, bodypanels, and various interior parts. Alloys for trimapplications are of the aluminium-magnesiumtype (2xxx series).

l Aircraft Alloys : The need for low weight inairframes has led to the development of very high-strength aluminium alloys for use as plate, sheet, and extrusions.

l Rigid Container Sheet : Aluminium rigidcontainer sheet is used mainly for container endsor container bodies. The ends for beverage cansare made of 5182 alloy and usually have tabsmade from 5042 or 5082 alloy.

l Bright Finishing Alloys : A number of alloys areproduced especially for surface finishing by brightanodizing. The common bright finishing alloysare 1100, 3002, 5252, 5657, 6463, 7016, and 7029.

Aluminium Alloy from Scrapand Virgin MetalAluminium, the second most plentiful metallic

element on earth, became an economiccompetitor in engineering applications as recentlyas the end of the 19th century. It was to become ametal for its time. The emergence of threeimportant industrial developments would, bydemanding material characteristics consistentwith the unique qualities of aluminium and itsalloys, greatly benefit growth in the productionand use of the new metal.Aluminium has been termed the versatile metal

of the 20th century since it finds application rightfrom the kitchen to the spaceship. The growingpopularity of this metal has been attributed to itsoutstanding physical and chemical properties, viz.lightness, and high strength of its alloys, high electricand thermal conductivity, good workability and themost important of all –its resistance to corrosion.Aluminium and its alloys find extensive applicationsin road transport, railways and aviation due to theirgood strength for relatively low weight. Aluminiumalso finds application in chemical and food processingplants. Owing to its good electrical conductivity, itfinds use in electrical industries. Its strength, brightness durability and capacity to take anodiccoating and colors are the most important propertiesfor its use for architectural purposes.

The first commercial applications of aluminiumwere novelty items such as mirror frames, housenumbers, and serving trays. Cooking utensils were

The key consumer industries in India are power, transportation, consumer durables, packaging andconstruction. Of this, power is the biggest consumer(about 44% of total) followed by infrastructure (17%)and transportation (about 10% to 12%). However, internationally, the pattern of consumption is in favorof transportation, primarily due to large-scalealuminium consumption by the aviation industry.White goods account for nearly 5% of aluminiumconsumption in the country. The products includeelectric fans, air conditioners, refrigerators andcoolers. The white goods industry uses both extrudedproducts and flats. In the transportation sector, aluminium is used for paneling, floors and windows. So far, it is not used for structural parts and bodies ofautomobiles. An Indian car uses only about 54 kg ofaluminium against a global average of 100 to 110 kg.This sets the high potential for growth with theincrease in the automobile sector.

Demand for aluminium is estimated to grow at 4to 6% per annum. The demand for the metal isexpected to pick up as the scenario improves for userindustries like power, infrastructure andtransportation, which are all on the move.

In the domestic market, the demand of aluminiumis expected to touch 1.5 mn ton by 2015-16. Domestic

India’s share in world aluminium market isestimated at around 3%. India ranks fifth in bauxiteproduction after Australia (62 mn tons), Guinea (17.50mn tons), Brazil (16.20 mn tons) and China (10.75 mntons). With a total output of 9.25 mn tones, thecountry contributes about 6% of the world’s totalproduction of 159 mn tones, India holds the fifthposition in reserves base and is ahead of China with2300 mn tones. India ranked seventh in aluminaproduction with a total output of 3 mn tones, a shareof nearly 5% of the global production of 61 mn tones.

The per capita consumption of aluminium inIndia continues to remain abysmally low at under 1kg as against nearly 25 to 30 kg in the US and Europe,15 kg in Japan, 10 kg in Taiwan and 3 kg in China.

Aluminium has a wide range of applications, fromaircraft building to packaging, a major consumer beingthe electrical industry. The two sectors, electricityand transportation, account for more than half ofthe total off take.

Ferro AlloysFerroalloys have been developed to improve

the properties of steels and alloys byintroducing specific alloying elements in desirablequantities in the most feasible technical andeconomic way.Ferroalloys are usually classified in two groups:

bulk (major) ferroalloys (produced in large quantities)and minor ferroalloys (produced in smaller quantities, but of a high importance). Bulk ferroalloys are used

in steelmaking and steel or iron foundries exclusively, whereas the use of special ferroalloys is far morevaried. About 85% to 90% of all ferroalloys are usedin steelmaking; the remaining ferroalloys are usedfor nonferrous alloys (e.g., those that are nickel ortitanium based) and by the chemicals industry.

Today, almost all ferroalloys are produced insubmerged arc furnaces where raw materials (ores),reductants (coke, silicon-based ferroalloys, aluminum),iron additions (iron ore or steel scrap), and fluxes(lime, magnesia, dolomite, limestone, fluorspar, etc.)are loaded and smelted, followed by the tapping ofslag and metal.

Ferroalloys Plays major role in Steel Productionand industrial development. These are iron basedalloys with varied elements introduced in steel makingto cater to the specific needs. These are specifiedadditions to the production of steel for variousapplications.USESl As deoxidizer, desulphurizer improves fluidity of

Ferro manganese are alloys composed of iron andone or two more metals like Mn, Si, Ti, W etc. Theferro alloys have usually lower melting points thantheir respective alloying metals in pure stable formand thus, can be readily incorporated to obtain themetals as ferro alloys than in their pure terms startingfrom their ores. Ferro manganese is a principle alloyingagent used in steel production steel/iron casting etc, where it also acts as a strengthener and deoxidizer. It imparts corrosion resistance to the products.

Ferro manganese along with Fe-Si, Fe-Cr, is a

Pharmaceutical Unit(Automatic Plant of Tablet and Capsule)

The Indian pharmaceutical sector has come along way, being almost non-existent before

1970 to a prominent provider of healthcare products,

meeting almost 95 per cent of the country’spharmaceuticals needs. The Industry today is in thefront rank of India’s science-based industries withwide ranging capabilities in the complex field of drugmanufacture and technology. It ranks very high inthe third world, in terms of technology, quality andrange of medicines manufactured. From simpleheadache pills to sophisticated antibiotics andcomplex cardiac compounds, almost every type ofmedicine is now made indigenously.

Indian Pharma Industry is playing a key role inpromoting and sustaining development in the vitalfield of medicines, besides this it boasts of qualityproducers and many units approved by regulatoryauthorities in USA and UK. International companiesassociated with this sector have stimulated, assistedand spearheaded this dynamic development in thepast 53 years and helped to put India on thepharmaceutical map of the world.

The Indian Pharmaceutical sector is highlyfragmented with more than 20,000 registered units.

It has expanded drastically in the last two decades. The leading 250 pharmaceutical companies control70% of the market, with market leader holding nearly7% of the market share. It is an extremely fragmentedmarket with severe price competition and governmentprice control. The pharmaceutical industry in Indiameets around 70% of the country’s demand for bulkdrugs, drug intermediates, pharmaceuticalformulations, chemicals, tablets, capsules, orals andinjectables. There are about 250 large units and about8000 Small Scale Units, which form the core of thepharmaceutical industry in India (including 5 CentralPublic Sector Units).

These units produce the complete range ofpharmaceutical formulations, i.e., medicines readyfor consumption by patients and about 350 bulk drugs,i.e., chemicals having therapeutic value and used forproduction of pharmaceutical formulations.

Technologically strong and totally self-reliant, thepharmaceutical industry in India has low costs ofproduction, low R&D costs, innovative scientificmanpower, strength of national laboratories and anincreasing balance of trade. The PharmaceuticalIndustry, with its rich scientific talents and researchcapabilities, supported by Intellectual PropertyProtection regime is well set to take on theinternational market.MARKET SURVEY

The Indian pharmaceutical industry is the fourthlargest in the world in terms of volume of output andthirteenth in domestic demand. However, the Indianindustry, valued at USD 17 bn in represented justover 1% of the global pharmaceutical industry in valueterms. The domestic market is estimated at Rs 680bn.

According to a study by McKinsey, Vision 2010,the domestic pharmaceutical industry could attain asize of USD 25 bn (Rs 1200 bn) by 2010 by focusing ontwo areas: first, innovation-led research, developmentand new drug discoveries; and second, informationtechnology-led remote sales and marketing.Incidentally, according to another report by AssociatedChamber of Commerce (ASSOCHAM) in India, the

market is estimated to grow to more modest level ofUSD 9.5 bn in 2010).

India has the world’s third largest activepharmaceutical ingredients (API) for the industryvalued at a little less than USD 2 bn. Top 5 APIproducers account for approximately 6.5 %. Theleading APIs are anti-infective, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and respiratory drugs.

However, India’s pharmaceutical industry mightwitness some decline in the number of smallercompanies that either leave the market or areacquired by larger Indian or foreign companies. Since2000, a number of smaller Indian pharmaceuticalcompanies have, in fact, been acquired by largercompanies. These cases include, among the morenotable ones, Wockhardt’s acquisition of Merind andTata Pharma; Ranbaxy’s purchase of Crosland;Nicholas Piramal’s acquisition of Roche etc.

The Indian firms produce nearly 60,000 genericbrands in 60 therapeutic categories and between350 and 400 bulk drugs. India’s drug market consistsmainly of second and third generation drugs no longersubject to patent protection in the developed world.Although India is the world’s leading producer ofgeneric drugs, its annual per capita consumption ofpharmaceuticals has been among the lowest placedapproximately at USD 4.50 per person as comparedto USD 820 in the United States and USD 13 in China.

The bulk drugs segment continues to be thehighest revenue generating segment for the Indianpharma industry. It accounts for production worthRs 120 bn and contributes about 36% of the totalpharma exports. India produces 400 bulk drugsthrough its 1,300 licensed bulk drug units that caterto most of the domestic bulk drug requirements.

The key categories driving growth are thetraditionally largest segment - anti-infective andgastro-intestinal, drugs, which expanded by 22% and19% respectively. Fast sales growth is also visible incategories like respiratory (18%), cardiac (14%),neurology (20%) and anti-diabetic (19%). Anti-TB isthe only category that has seen a decline in valueand volume terms.

The number of product launches exceeds 2,000annually. Both MNC and Indian companies areimplementing strategies which will help them tobenefit from and cope with the developing patentregime. Global pharma companies are increasinglyexploring low cost option to outsource research andmanufacturing, because of emerging slow-down inpatented drug sales and high cost of R&D.

Indian pharmaceutical companies are in variousstages of new drug discoveries. They have beenscouting for global partners to help them in theirgoal. However, companies like Dr Reddy’s

Zeolite 4a(Detergent Grade)

The term zeolite is used to denote crystallinealuminium silicates of natural or synthetic

origin. Chemists have classified approximately 50natural and more than 200 synthetic zeolites. Acommon property of all zeolites is their ionexchange capability. On the basis of this characteristic, zeolites were

first put to industrial use in the sugar industry in1896. In the 1920s, the adsorptive capacity of zeolitesin separation processes led to the name “molecularsieve” being used as a synonym for industriallyproduced zeolites.

In the 60s, the catalytic properties of zeolites forpetrochemical processes, especially the fluid catalyticcracking (FCC) process, were discovered. Today, around 300,000 t of synthetic zeolites are being usedannually in catalytic and adsorptive applications. Inaddition, a further 300,000 t of natural zeolites perannum are being used in the construction materialsand paper industries, in waste water treatment, insoil improvement, as an animal feed additive and ascat litter. A systematic quest for phosphate substitutesled to research into zeolites as builders for detergents.

In principle, sodium aluminium silicates with thefollowing general formula are suitable:Nax[(AlO2)x(SiO2)y].zH2O

The zeolites available for detergents today (ZeoliteA, Zeolite P, Zeolite X) have significantly differentcrystalline structures. The basic unit of the zeoliteused in detergents since 1976, Zeolite A (x = y = 12, z= 27), often also referred to as Zeolite NaA or Zeolite4A, comprises 8 cubo-octahedrons linked via 12cuboids to a cavity which is referred to as the á-cage.

A further new development on the market is aco-crystallite comprised of 80% Zeolite X and 20%Zeolite A. This grade, referred to as Zeolite AX, displayscalcium and magnesium exchange properties whichare superior to those of a blend of the pure zeolites asystematic quest for phosphate substitutes led toresearch into zeolites as builders for detergents. Inprinciple, sodium aluminium silicates with thefollowing general formula are suitable:

Zeolites - safe for humans and the environmentlaws and ordinances on detergents and cleansersfollowed in Europe some other countries whichaffected both surfactants and other detergent

ingredients. Attention was focused in particular onphosphates, due to the eutrophication of bodies ofwater.USES

Synthetic detergent zeolites, are the principlealternative to phosphate type builders, used inhousehold detergents and softening the washingwater by calcium ion exchange. The major part ofphosphate-free household detergents is based onthe use of Zeolite A as builder.

They prove inert when exposed to elevatedtemperatures, mechanical influences or alkalinity. The high flexibility of zeolites with respect toformulation and ease of processing together with theeconomic advantage of the raw material have led toit becoming an extremely attractive builder.MARKET SURVEY

Zeolite is said to be the most environmentalfriendly input for detergent and has replaced STAPP(sodium Tri Polyphosphate) as the softening agent. At present, there are only a few manufacturers inIndia, meeting partly export and domestic markets.Keeping the increasing demand for detergent powderswhich was at 15.50 lakh tonnes in last few years andenvironmental consciousness among consumers, thescope for non-polluting detergent building productsis very good in future.

Detergents, as a constituent of the overall FMCGindustry, accounts for a near 12% of the total demandfor all FMCG products estimated at over Rs 530 bn.Detergents, chemically known as alfa olefinsulphonates (AOS) are used as fabric brighteningagent, anti-deposition agent, stain remover and as ableacher. A major input for the production ofdetergents is a petrochemical, Linear Alkyl Benzene(LAB), while soaps rely more on an inorganic chemical, caustic soda, as a major input.

The detergent market in India is dominated byHUL, Nirma is the second largest player with an overallmarket share of 19%. Nirma is more dominant in thestates of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, that is Northwest India. Nirma has the highest marketshare of around 40% in Gujarat. It has the highestmarket share in the mass segment, like toilet soaps.

The top four industry participants – Procter &Gamble, Nice Group, Liby Group and Unilever – jointlycontribute 47.5% of total industry revenue, suggesting a moderate level of concentration. TheUS soap and detergent manufacturing industryincludes about 650 companies with combined annual

revenue of nearly $30 billion. The industry is forecastto grow at a moderate rate in the next two years.Growth drivers include expansion opportunities inemerging markets and rising demand for moreenvironmentally friendly products.

Zeolite 4a’s greatest use is in the field of laundryas, it can exchange calcium ions to producedeminrealised water, then removes dirt and preventsdirt redeposit. Housing detergents include thecomplete range of detergents used for everydayhousehold cleaning needs. On the other hand, industrial detergents have a wide variety and usesdepending on their formulated type. The householdand industrial detergent market has huge growthpotential based on its variety of applications inhousehold uses and industrial uses. The shift in thelifestyle of people and global modernization are thekey features of the drivers for household detergents.

Also Zeolite detergent grade is also used in Wastewater treatment that contains water from the sewagedischarge from agricultural and industrial, civil andaquatic animal husbandry containing ammonianitrogen, not only harm fish survival, pollution inbreeding environment, but also promote the growthof algae, block lakes and rivers. Zeolite particles aregood carriers of bacteria, which adsorb on the zeolitesurface resulting in increased sludge activity. Thereis a significant drawback to the application of thezeolite additive. Formation of the bacteria layer onthe zeolite surface is a slow process and becomeseffective only after approximately a week.

Functional Food BasedBakery Products(Bread, Cookies and Biscuits)

BISCUITS

Sweet biscuits are commonly eaten as a snackfood, and are, in general, made with wheat

flour or oats, and sweetened with sugar or honey.Varieties may contain chocolate, fruit, jam, nuts,or even be used to sandwich other fillings. Savorybiscuits or crackers (such as cream crackers, waterbiscuits, oatcakes, or crisp breads) are usuallyplainer and commonly eaten with cheesefollowing a meal. Other savory biscuits includethe Jewish biscuits known as matzos. Many

savory biscuits also contain additional ingredientsfor flavor or texture, such as poppy seeds, onionor onion seeds, cheese (such as cheese melts),and olives.

COOKIESThe term cookies generally refer to a baked

product containing a percentage of sugar and fatrelative to the flour and a small quantity of water. This general statement on composition separatescookies from bread that contain relatively low level ofsugar and fat and intermediate level of water. Thetype of cookies is defined not only by their compositionbut also by their method of production. Cookiescontaining high amount of fats and sugar can beprocessed by three procedures, like Rotary mold, wirecut, or bar press process.

BREADBread is a staple food prepared by baking dough

of flour and water. It is popular around the world andis one of the world’s oldest foods. Combinations ofdifferent flours, differing proportions of ingredientsand varying preparations have resulted in a widevariety of bread types, shapes, sizes, and textures. Itmay be leavened (aerated) by a number of differentprocesses ranging from the use of naturally occurringmicrobes to high-pressure artificial aeration duringpreparation and/or baking. Breads may also be leftunleavened. Ingredients from fruits and nuts tovarious fats, to chemical additives designed to improveflavor, texture, color, and/or shelf life can be used.

Bread is served in different forms at the variousmeals of the day, eaten as a snack, and used as aningredient in other culinary preparations. As a basicfood worldwide, bread has come to take on significancebeyond mere nutrition, evolving into a fixture inreligious rituals, secular cultural life, cuisine andlanguage.USES

Bread can be served at many temperatures; oncebaked, it can subsequently be toasted. Bread can bedipped into liquids such as gravy, olive oil, or soup; itcan be topped with various sweet and savory spreads,or used to make sandwiches containing myriadvarieties of meats, cheeses, vegetables, andcondiments. Bread may also be used as an ingredientin other culinary preparations, such as the use ofbreadcrumbs to provide crunchy crusts or thickensauces, sweet or savory bread puddings, or as abinding agent in sausages and other ground meatproducts.

Biscuits are frequently eaten with tea or coffee. The biscuit is dunked into the tea and eaten quicklydue to the biscuit’s tendency to disintegrate whenwet. Biscuit is also used as a cracker with cheeses,

The Indian biscuit market is estimated at around2 mn tonnes per annum of which the unorganizedsector accounts for over 50% of the market share. The unorganized sector is composed of some 30,000small and tiny bakeries across the country. Theorganized industry includes two large units, about50 medium scale and approximately 2,500 small scaleindustry (SSI) units manufacturing biscuits and otherbakery products.

The two major bakery products, biscuits andbread, account for 82% of all bakery production. Theunorganized sector accounts for about half of thetotal biscuit production. It accounts for 85% of thetotal bread production and around 90% of the otherbakery products estimated at 750,000 tonnes. Thelast includes pastries, cakes, buns, rusks and others.

Biscuits are estimated to enjoy around 37% shareby volume and 75% by value of the bakery industry. The organized sector caters to the medium andpremium segments, which are relatively less price-sensitive. The organized sector is unable to competeat the lower price range due to the excise advantageenjoyed by the informal sector.

In India, the per capita consumption of biscuits isaround 2 kgs; compared to more than 10 kgs in theUS, UK and the West European countries and over4.25 kg in South East Asian countries like Singapore,Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia. China has a percapita consumption of 1.9 kg, while in the case ofJapan it is reported at 7.5 kg.

Britannia, claiming a 38% share of the market invalue terms, is investing Rs 1.30 bn to increase itscapacity of biscuits of 433,000 tonnes, a year. Thecompany had registered a growth of 8.6% a year during2001-06 period. At a turnover of Rs 19.8 bn frombiscuits in 2006-07, the company registered a year-on-year growth of 24%. Currently, biscuits contribute90% of Britannia’s annual revenue of Rs 22 bn.Britannia’s seven brands - Tiger, Good Day, Marie,Treat, 50:50, Milk Bikis and Nutrichoice - have alreadybecome household names across the country.

Modern Foods, the first public sector undertakingto be privatized by the government in a strategic saleto Hindustan Lever (now Hindustan Unilever India)is now being merged with its buyer as a wholly-ownedsubsidiary. Apart from paying nearly, Rs 1.50 bn to

acquire Modern Foods, HUL had incurred nearly Rs300 mn on VRS to the employees of the Modern Foods, apart from investing on upgrading the productioncapabilities at certain units. This was its first forayinto baking business. Modern Foods had nearly halfof the organized market to itself.

The size of the bread market is estimated at closeto Rs 17 bn. A limited number of producers in theorganized industry is supplemented by a large numberof units in the unorganized sector. According toindustry sources, companies, such as Blue Foods,Sweet Chariot, Nilgiris and others are brushing uptheir strategies to be present in the fast growingpremium bakery segment. Britannia has since beenjoined by other bread manufacturers like Candico(India), Elite Breads and a host of others with smallmarket presence. From a low priced commodity, breadhas graduated into a branded product withdiscriminating prices. Barring Premium Bake, theothers are priced high - almost double the standardbread brands.

Potato StarchPotato is widely consumed as food all over the

world. It contains the starch as a majorcarbohydrate. Surplus and cull potatoes are usedas feed for livestock and also as raw material forthe manufacture of starch, ethyl alcohol and afew other industrial products like, dextrose, liquidGlucose etc. The potato contains approximately18-21% of carbohydrates. The major carbohydrateis starch. This starch comprises 65-80% of thedry weight of the tuber, is calorifically the mostimportant nutritional component.Potato starch is starch extracted from potatoes.

The cells of the root tubers of the potato plantcontain starch grains (leucoplasts). To extract thestarch, the potatoes are crushed; the starch grainsare released from the destroyed cells. The starch isthen washed out and dried to powder.

Potato starch is a very refined starch, containing

availability of cheaper sources of starch such as maizeand tapioca. The pattern of world potato utilizationindicates that over 2.8 per cent potato is used forstarch extraction. The enormous amount for wastepotatoes available, if used for starch production wouldnot only result in value added products, but will alsogenerate employment and save foreign exchange, itwill also reduce cost of starch production frompotatoes.

The global starch consumption is expected togrow from 13.6 million tons in 2012 to 16.28 milliontons by 2017, at an estimated CAGR of 3.5% from2012 to 2017. The North America region is expectedto continue its dominance on the global modifiedstarch consumption, however, due to the increasingimpact for demand of convenience health food, functional food, and the need to focus on alternatesources of starch, the Asian sub-continent is expectedto drive the growth of the industry for the next fewyears. China and India are the leaders in the APACmarket, driving the demand for modified starchbecause of the changing lifestyles and growingeconomies, boosting the need for convenience foodsector.

A second large consumer of starch hydrolysisproducts is the fermentation industry. Manyfermentation processes run on starch hydrolysate. This is partly for cost reasons and partly because theorganisms in use have been trained to prefer glucoseto saccharose. The only exception is yeast, whichtraditionally grows best in molasses. Markets forvirtually all fermentation-derived products, whetherthey are penicillin based, citric acids or amino acids, expand at high rates and add to the demand for starchhydrolysis products.

Minor applications of starch syrups include theiruse in the manufacturing of sugar alcohols, particularly of Sorbitol; low calorie content and highdegree of sweetness make sorbitol ideal for a numberof different foods.

Overall, the markets for starches and derivativesare expected to expand on a global scale at asubstantial rate.

minimal protein or fat. This gives the powder a clearwhite color, and the cooked starch typicalcharacteristics of neutral taste, good clarity, highbinding strength, long texture and a minimal tendencyto foaming or yellowing of the solution.

Potato starch contains approximately 800ppm phosphate bound to the starch; this increasesthe viscosity and gives the solution a slightly anioniccharacter, a low gelatinization temperature(approximately 140 °F (60 °C)) and high swellingpower. Starch is a tasteless, odorless, whiteamorphous powder, insoluble in water. All greenplants store starch as nourishment for the future.Starch is one of the fundamental substances in thevegetable kingdom and is in existence abundantly inthe natural world.USES

Starch is mainly used as material both in themanufacture of food and non-food products. In foodprocessing a lot of starch is converted to starchhydrolysate. It is also used as a thickener in soupsand gravies. Pre-gelatinized potato starch is used inconsiderable quantities in instant puddings, in whichits properties are preferable to those of cerealstarches. It is used in confectionery industry as amedium for molding cast candies such as jelly beansand gum drops, as a thickening agent in syntheticjellies, for sauces, soups, and stews.

Potato starch tolerates higher temperatures thancornstarch when used as a thickener. It’s a naturalway to add moistness to many baked goods and as adusting agent mixed with powdered sugar, for candygums, chewing gums etc. It is also used in producingadhesives and dextrin’s, as a fermentation rawmaterial, binder for tablets, and binder and extenderfor sausages.

Starch derivatives are used in many recipes, forexample in noodles, wine gums, cocktail nuts, potatochips, hot dog sausages, bakery and instantsoups and sauces, in gluten-freerecipes in kosher foods for Passover and in Asiancuisine. In pastry, e.g. sponge cake, it is used to keepthe cake moist and give a soft texture. It is alsooccasionally used in the preparation of pre-packed grated cheese, to reduce sweating and binding.MARKET SURVEY

Fruit Processing(Mango, Pineapple & Passion FruitsConcentrates)

Tropical fruits are harvested from woody plants(avocado, mango, orange) but also from

herbaceous plants (banana, papaya) and vines(passion fruit). Tropical fruits, in most cases, aresold fresh, and off-grade fruit is processed. Mosttropical fruits are highly perishable, andsignificant development has taken place toprocess selected fruits into dried products, juicesand purees. Bananas such as plantains are alsooften used as a starch staple in Africa, Asia andLatin America and not as a dessert fruit. The fruit juice industry is a comparative young

sector. While markets in China, India and EasternEurope are still growing today, the Western marketsof Europe and North America are now experiencingcutthroat competition. In these saturated markets, niche products such as those made from tropical fruitsor so-called superfruits, premium juices (NFC- notfrom concentrate), puree, organic juices or productsfocusing on important. If you look around thebeverage section of a supermarket these days, youwill discover a fascinating variety of fruit and vegetablejuices. The aseptic fruit concentrates are preparedafter evaporation of water from fruit juices. Thesemaintain quality, prolonged shelf life and optimizethe transport and storage cost.

The plant facility offers a wider range of final juiceproducts for distribution such as fruit juiceconcentrates either packed in bulk or for consumeruse, blended juices, both concentrated and ready forconsumption, along with single strength fruit juicespackaged in a wide variety of commercial containers. There has been a remarkable growth in the demandfor the juice concentrates due to the increasingpopularity of new non-alcoholic and alcoholic fruitdrink products, ice cream, yoghurt and baby food etc.The fruit & vegetable syrups or concentrates are used

as flavors in these products. The soft drink market is also creating huge

demand for the concentrates. The move away fromalcoholic drinks and the relative inconvenience ofhot drinks has resulted in a major shift to packagedsoft drinks of all flavors.MARKET SURVEY

FRUIT BEVERAGESIn volume terms, the total Indian market for fruit

juices and related products, such as nectars squashes, concentrates and fruit drinks, is estimated atequivalent of 500 mn cases. Of this, only 10% isaccounted for by packaged products and the rest issold loose. Of the packaged products, 85% is madeup of juices and nectars. The market for brandedfruit-based drinks (Maaza, Frooti, Slice and others),nectar drinks (Real and Tropicana) and others isplaced at Rs 8 bn. Of this Rs 6 bn is the market forfruit-based drinks and nearly Rs 2 bn is for fruitnectars. Besides, there is a large segment of kioskvendors, especially in the urban areas, whose size isestimated at between Rs 8 and Rs 10 bn. The overallmarket for fruit juices of all types would thus bearound Rs 18 bn.

People, are now increasingly going in for freshfruit juices vending from kiosk fountains whichproduce instant juices from fresh fruits in thepresence of the consumer as well as bottled juices. Itcould be due to the non-availability of hygienicallyproduced and well-preserved products or due tochange in lifestyle of the consumer segment.

The canned juice segment covered brands likeNAFED, Noga, Midland, Gold Coin and Druk. Thesewere fruit juices or nectars - not drinks. These didnot make a mark in the market for whatever reasons:high price, unattractive packaging, lack of rightpromotion program.

There is no general acceptance of the productforms in the fruit drinks market. The consumer isbasically concerned that it is a real fruit juice and nota synthetically constituted product. Among the fruit

juices are Pepsi’s Tropicana nectar, Dabur’s Real andfruit drinks Frooti and Slice. All these are real, reconstituted drinks from fruit pulps or concentrates. The fruit drinks differ in pulp content: the juices haveover 85%, nectars 20% to 85% and fruit drinks lessthan 20% pulp. The leading fruit juice brands, besidesReal and Tropicana, are Frooti, Onjus and Jumpin. The fruit drinks are based on oranges, mangoes, pineapples, grapes, apples, guava and tomato.

Enkay Texofood Industries entered the marketwith what is claimed as 100% natural orange juice inIndia with Onjus brand. Enkay happens to be thelargest Indian exporter of fruit juices, pulp andconcentrates to Europe and North America, withclients such as Unilever, Coke, Pepsi and Nestle. Thecompany’s plants near Vapi in Gujarat have beenproducing daily 80,000 packs of 250 ml and 70,000packs of one litre of Onjus.

The emerging concept of juice bars and the recenttrend of health awareness among the population havetogether contributed towards making theconsumption of juices much more popular than beforein India. A number of companies are trying to capturethe untapped segment of the market aimed atchildren. The rural market in India has huge growthpotential in this regard.

With the availability of a wide range of options,Indian consumers have become much more brandconscious these days. Consequently, the domesticjuice market has also witnessed the emergence of anumber of branded players. Current trends suggestthat the domestic players are competing well withthe multinational companies. Entry of smaller brandsis also a very good sign for the overall juice market inIndia :

l The juices category was valued at INR 18,949.2m($459.2m) in 2008, representing a CAGR of 20%since 2003.

l By the end of 2013, the juices category will beworth INR 29,217.6m ($708m), with an expectedCAGR of 9% between 2008 and 2013.

M.S. & H.T. Nuts & BoltsFasteners have played a major role in the

advancement of the human race since prehistoricdays when the caveman used thongs to hold a rockinto the split end of a stick to make the first axe.Since that day, the progress of fastening methodsand devices includes: wooden pegs; wedges; the firstiron nails; glue; rivets; welding; and today, a multitudeof highly specialized fasteners that range from simplewooden clothespins to cap screws made fromspecialized materials for our space programs.

Few of us realize the importance that fastenersplay in our way of life. Less than $100 worth offasteners represents the difference between a uselesspile of parts and a finished automobile. A $75,000crawler tractor would be nothing but scrap ironwithout a few hundred dollars worth of nuts andbolts. Without the variety of fastening devicesavailable to industry, we would have to do withoutelectricity, city water, natural gas, telephone, radios, television, refrigeration, transportation, canned andfrozen foods, clothing, shelter, and in fact, almostevery necessity and convenience we take for granted. Each year, the fastener industry uses over two milliontons of steel to produce more than 200 billionfasteners in over two million different shapes andsizes. To keep pace with the rapidly expanding marketand increasing demands for absolute reliability aswell as availability, the fastener industry mustcontinually develop new materials, improve itsmanufacturing and distribution techniques, inventingenious new parts and gain prestige in theindustrial world. All of these factors compile to makethis one of the most complex industries that exist inthe world today.MARKET SURVEY

FASTENERSFasteners mainly cover nuts, bolts, screws, studs

and rivets and are segmented between MS (mild steel)and HT (high tensile) fasteners. These fasteners areused in engineering systems. All types of fasteners, except high tensile and special type fasteners, arereserved for the SSI sector. MS fasteners are thusproduced mostly in the unorganized sector, while HTfasteners are produced by the organized sector, asthese require superior technology which SSIunorganized sector can ill afford. HT fasteners areeither standard fasteners or specialized fasteners, the latter being made to meet specific customerrequirements. The industry has been opened for FDIthrough direct route, if the products to be producedare not reserved for the SSI sector.

The overall fasteners market is estimated at aboutRs 28 bn. While the organized sector (HT fasteners)has a share of 65%, the balance of 35% is shared byunorganized sector and imports. The imports in 2006-07 were Rs 8 bn, leaving Rs 2 bn or 7% as the marketfor the unorganized sector in value terms. The marketis heavily dependent on imports which have beengrowing at close to 28.5% in recent period.

General application fasteners are catered to bythe unorganized sector where brand and quality havelittle meaning and price is the main criteria forselection of the supplier. On the other hand, hightensile fasteners are used in engineering applications, such as in the automobile, industrial and othersectors. The varied applications include construction, railways and the domestic sectors. The market ismade up of OEM or bulk market; and the replacementmarket (the retail market).

Inspired by the phenomenal growth in the recentyears, the leading companies in the organized markethave regularly been expanding their capacities. Theboom has been due mainly to the upswing witnessedby the automobile sector, the main end-user industry, accounting for almost half of the demand for fasteners. The four major companies in the industry areSundaram Fasteners (turnover Rs 12 bn), the leader;Lakshmi Precision Screws (Rs 1.9 bn), MahindraFasteners (Rs 408.5 mn) and Sterling Tools (Rs. 1.4bn). Other units, among the major players, are GuestKeen Williams (GKW) (Rs 1.1 bn), and PrecisionFasteners (Rs 770 mn).

Sundaram Fasteners (SFL) is a highly ratedcompany and receives orders from overseas marketsincluding those from the US (General Motors, inparticular). The preferred products are radiator capsand powder metal parts. Sundaram also supplies coldextruded parts to Delphi Automotive Systems. Dueto better product-mix in exports and increased salesvolume, TVS group’s blue chip, SFL has emerged as astrong player in the high-tensile fasteners market.

Sundaram Fasteners invested Rs 250 mn forsetting up of a greenfield manufacturing facility inChina. The company’s revenues from the Chineseoperations account for 25% of its total exports. Themanufacturing unit has an installed capacity of 6,000tpa. Precision Fasteners leads in the industrial fastenersegment. The company started manufacturing a widerange of Unbrako high-tensile fasteners’ forgedcomponents in collaboration with SPS TechnologiesInc of the US. Precision Fasteners had plans to enterthe automotive fasteners market and was to targetmainly the replacement segment. Its Silvasa plantcapacity was being increased two-fold.

Laxmi Precision Screws manufactures industrialas well as automotive fasteners. The company isreported to be developing indigenously cold-headingquality alloy steel wire which will improve the marginsenabling it to compete globally. The company’turnover has progressively gone up from Rs 826 mnin 2000-01 to over Rs 1.90 bn in 2006-07 and to Rs2.0 bn in the following year. The latter represents agrowth of over 13.5% in 2006-07 and 5.8% in thefollowing year.

Paper Manufacturing PlantWith Pulp from Bamboo, Wood and Grass

Paper is made of pulped cellulose fibers likewood, bamboo, cotton or flax. Papyrus is a

thick, paper-like material produced from the pithof the Cyperus papyrus plant which was used inancient Egypt and other Mediterranean culturesfor writing long before the making of paper inChina. The use of paper for various purposes is an

essential feature of the modern society. Thereforepulp and paper manufacturing is very important partof modern industry. Pulp and paper production isbased on the use of bamboo, wood or grass as rawmaterial, but also on the consumption of large-scalechemicals, like chlorine, sodium hydroxide, etc.Approximately 25,000 plants with a woody stem areregistered under the term wood. However, thedifferent varieties clearly differ in terms of usabilityfor the production of paper. Wood comes from treesand its types are Soft Wood, Hard wood, Abnoramalwood. Wood is made up of cellulose fibres that arebound together by a material called lignin. In a pulpmill, the fibres are separated from one another into amass of individual fibres. This is called woodpulp.

Woodpulp currently represents 33% of the fibreused to make paper and board in the India. 6% ofthat is home produced and is used by the 2 integratedmills (that is a mill that carries out the entirepapermaking process from tree to end product). Noneof these mills use fully mature grown trees, but rathersmall dimension timber (which is of no use to othercommercial users such as furniture makers andbuilders), saw mill waste and forest thinnings.

Bamboo is one of rapidly growing and high yieldingwoody plants. It produces a large biomass per unitarea as compared to many other plants. Bamboo isclassified as a grass, although it attains a considerablesize and the stems or culms are quite hard andresistant to mechanical and chemical action. Bamboofibre is considerably longer than most of the perennialgrasses and annual plants and therefore, iscomparable to coniferous wood pulp. The fibre isextraordinarily fine, 0.015 mm. Since the fibres arelong and flexible, all kinds of paper area manufacturedfrom it. Grasses, or more technically graminoids, aremonocotyledonous, usually herbaceous plants withnarrow leaves growing from the base. They includethe “true grasses”, of the family Poaceae (also calledGramineae), as well as the sedges (Cyperaceae) and

the rushes (Juncaceae). The true grasses includecereals, bamboo and the grasses of lawns (turf) andgrassland. Sedges include many wild marsh andgrassland plants, and some cultivated ones such aswater chestnut (Eleocharis dulcis) and papyrus sedge(Cyperus papyrus). Some of the various grasses usedfor producing paper are: Esparto Grass, Switchgrass,Cogon Grass etc.

Pulp technology deals with the liberation of fibresfixed in the wood or plant matrix. Pulp can beconverted to a number of different products with avariety of applications and there-by with a variety ofproduct demands. Paper tech-nology is the knowledgeof how to unify the fibres to form the paper web.

Paper is made by pulping wood, bleaching thispulp and then spreading it out into sheets to make itinto paper. At various stages of the process, chemicalsare used to give the paper particular properties, suchas the bleaching chemicals that make paper white(and which also enable it to subsequently be coloured).USES

PULPPulp is used for Paper and board production. The

furnishing of pulps used depends on the quality onthe finished paper. Chemical pulps are used formaking nanocellulose. Dissolving pulp is used inmaking regenerated cellulose that is used textile andcellophane production. Fluff pulp is used in diapers, feminine hygiene products and nonwovens.

PAPERPaper may be impregnated, enameled, metalized,

made to look like parchment, creped, water-proofed,waxed, glazed, sensitized, bent, turned, folded, twisted, crumpled, cut, torn, dissolved, macerated, molded, and embossed. It may be colored, coated, printed or even written on! It can be laminated withfabric, plastic and metal. It can be opaque, translucentor transparent. It is naturally combustible, or can bemade “ re-retardant. It may be a carrier or a barrier. It may be made tough enough to withstand acid, orsoft enough for a baby’s skin. It can be read and wornas a garment. It can be re-used and recycled and it ismade from a renewable, sustainable source.MARKET SURVEY

It isconstituted broadly of 30% of cultural papers (writingand printing), 14% of newsprint, and the balance ofkraft and packaging paper including paperboards. TheIndian production is about 2 to 3% of the global total. The Indian market is today growing at three timesthe rate of the global average. India’s paper industryplans to invest USD 2.5 bn in the next two threeyears to add 2 mn tpa of paper and paper productsproduction capacity. It will also help in improving cost-competitiveness.

The Indian paper industry is one of the traditionalindustries of India consisting of over 500 units withan installed capacity (excluding newsprint) of over7.5 mn tonne per annum.

India has become self-sufficient in paper exceptfor special varieties such as high quality bond paperand newsprint. The industry has progressed in thesense that dependence on wood-based raw materialhas come down to approximately 40%. Bagasse(about 33%) and waste paper (over 27%) nowconstitute more than 60% of the raw material base. The consumption of paper products is growing at afast pace of around 6.5% and is expected to furthergo up in future. The industry now uses three sourcesof raw materials - recycled paper, wood and agrobased, and waste. The recycled paper, comparativelycheaper, comprises almost 40% of the total rawmaterial requirements at present.

Major players from the paper industry had linedup close to $2.5 bn worth of investment. For instance,AP Paper planned for a capacity of 22,000 tpa at acost of Rs 12.6 bn. Century Textiles is putting up70,000 tpa at a cost of Rs 3.85 bn. The largestinvestment is coming from ITC with a 200,000 tpapulp and paper capacity at a cost of Rs 25 bn. JKPaper, Seshasayee Paper, TN Newsprint and WestCoast Paper are also ramping up capacities. In themeantime the industry had witnessed somesignificant takeovers: Triveni Tissues by ITC, SewaPaper by Ballarpur, Central Pulp Mills by JK Corp.

India is the 15th largest paper manufacturer inthe world, accounting for ~2.5% of the world’s output.India is the world’s fastest growing paper market, growing at a CAGR of 7.3% over FY 06-11. Domesticpaper & paperboard demand is closely linked toeconomic activity as demand has grown at an average0.9x multiple of GDP in the past 5 years.

Over the next five years, paper demand isprojected to grow from 10.8 Million Tons in FY 11 to14.7 Million Tons in FY 16, representing a CAGR of6.4% and GDP multiple of 0.8x. Over the long-term,the country’s paper demand is looking structurallypositive as India’s per capita paper consumption of8.8 kg is well behind the global per capitaconsumption of 58 kg.

The Indian Paper Industry is a booming industryand is expected to grow in the years to come. Theusage of paper cannot be ignored and this awarenessis bound to bring about changes in the paper industryfor the better. It is a well known fact that the use ofplastic is being objected to these days. The reasonbeing, there are few plastics which do not possessthe property of being degradable, as such, use ofplastic is being discouraged.

Wood timber forms the major raw material in theIndian paper industry. Therefore, forests determinethe extent to which the Indian paper industry canflourish.

The Paper industry is a priority sector for foreign

Fly Ash BeneficiationFly ash, also known as flue-ash, is one of the

residues generated in combustion, andcomprises the fine particles that rise with theflue gases. Ash which does not rise is termedbottom ash. In an industrial context, fly ash usuallyrefers to ash produced during combustion of coal.Fly ash is generally captured by electrostaticprecipitators or other particle filtration equipmentbefore the flue gases reach the chimneys of coal-fired power plants, and together with bottom ash

removed from the bottom of the furnace is in thiscase jointly known as coal ash. Depending uponthe source and makeup of the coal being burned, the components of fly ash vary considerably, butall fly ash includes substantial amounts of silicondioxide (SiO2) (both amorphous and crystalline)and calcium oxide (CaO) but may include toxicconstituents in quantities from trace amounts toseveral percent such as: arsenic, beryllium, boron, cadmium, chromium, hexavalent chromium, cobalt, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, selenium, strontium, thallium, and vanadium, along with dioxins and PAH compounds. In the past, fly ash was generally released into

the atmosphere, but pollution control equipmentmandated in recent decades now requires that it becaptured prior to release. In the US, fly ash is generallystored at coal power plants or placed in landfills. About43% is recycled, often used to supplement Portlandcement in concrete production.MARKET SURVEY

It is estimated that the total mineral wealth offlyash is approx. of the order of Rs.30,000 crore/yearwhich is expected to grow 2.5 times by the end of thecentury. Significance of this area could well be
