Emerging Heirlooms

In August of 2014, Kathleen Tellish celebrated

the opening of Emerging Heirlooms, a retail

store dedicated to selling Eco-Friendly paints

and accessories and joined the growing number

of women entrepreneurs starting businesses at

record rates, states the 2014 State of Women-

Owned Businesses Report. The report notes

that women now start 1,288 (net) new busi-

nesses per day in the U.S., which is double the

rate from only three years ago. There are now

more than 9.1 million women-owned businesses

in the U.S., up from 8.6 million in 2013, and

these businesses generate more than $1.4 trillion

in revenues, employ 7.9 million people, and

account for 30 percent of all enterprises, accord-

ing the report.

Emerging Heirlooms, located in Robinson

Township will also offer furniture painting

classes, resale of prefinished furniture, home

accents and handmade quilts.

Kathleen graduated from JTBC’s Entrepreneur-

ship Training Program in March of 2014. She

started the class with the hopes of refining her

business concept. By the end of the class, she had

defined her business concept and polished her

presentation. Her fellow classmates and the

instructor were all too willing to engage her in

this exciting retail development.

Kathleen is no stranger to design or small busi-

ness, as she has interior design training and in-

volved herself with several other business ven-

tures.

Kathleen plans to capture the growing market of

the DIY homeowners who like to preserve and

repurpose furniture or who have a need to use

non-toxic paints.

Her advice to new business owners: “Don’t try

to rush things, expect delays that can sometimes

take months. Expect to spend more money than

you originally planned and expect to spend a lot

of time.”

Kathleen made herself available to give back to

the program by taking part in our first “Guppy

Tank” event. She, along with Community De-

velop Program of Beaver County’s Suzanne

Modrak and Washington County Council on

Economic Development’s April Cacia, judged

and critiqued our August 2014 class on their

final business model presentations. She offered

valuable ideas, information and leads to help

these entrepreneurs start a viable business. Her

generosity of her time, knowledge and experi-

ence was appreciated by the students and staff.

Kathleen Tellish, a recent graduate of the Entrepreneurship Training Program and owner of Emerging Heirlooms inside her new store which is located in Robinson Township.

————————————————————————— In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help businesses with their most pressing need — getting more cus-tomers. The day encourages people to shop at small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The single day has grown into a powerful movement, and more people are taking part than ever before.

This year, the big day is Saturday, Nov 29th !

JTBC Entrepreneurship Training Program is proud to be a participant this year.
