GUIDE TO SIXTH FORM AND SIXTH FORM SCHOLARSHIPS ACADEMIC YEAR OF ENTRY 2021
2
We are delighted that you are interested in joining
Eastbourne College for your A-level studies.
Competition for entry to our sixth form is strong and
as well as academic ability we seek pupils who wish to
be part of a vibrant community to which they will
contribute fully.
There are two methods of entry:
normal entry (following a visit and based on GCSE
predictions where relevant)
scholarship entry (assessments take place at the
College in November in the preceding year of
entry, ie the first term of Year 11).
Our sixth form entry is an important cohort for the
College and brings with it fresh ideas, energy and
ambition. We embrace all our new sixth form entrants
and are particularly excited about scholarship
candidates applying to join the College.
The College is pleased to offer a range of A-level
subjects and a robust enrichment programme for our
sixth form pupils, as well as many different scholarship
options.
Scholarships are offered across multiple disciplines
including academic, art, design, drama, music and sport.
As a College we are very fortunate to attract a high level
of interest in our scholarship programme. In addition to
our core scholarship awards, we are also able to offer
sixth form named awards to some candidates.
In celebration of our 150th anniversary, the College
announced the Professor Soddy awards for talented
academic pupils. This award and some of the other
named awards can be applied for on an individual basis;
all named awards are dependent on availability. Please
see the Sixth Form Named Award sections in this
booklet for more information.
Applicants for the sixth form should be predicted a
GCSE grade average of 6 or above, and receive a very
positive reference from their current school. We
normally expect sixth form applicants to complete a
minimum of 8 GCSEs.
If you would like to be considered for entry to the
sixth form at the College in September 2021
please contact us to arrange either a personal or
virtual visit. This should be done as early as possible
and certainly no later than by the end of the first term of
Year 11.
If you would like to make an application for the sixth
form, your parents will need to complete a registration
form (available upon request or online) and return it
together with a £100 registration fee. Early registration
is recommended (preferably before the end of
November of Year 11) and applications will be
considered in the order that they are received, with
offers made subject to availability. Applications received
after December of Year 11 will be considered in the
normal manner if spaces are available.
On receipt of a positive reference from your current
school, having met you and your meeting our entrance
requirements, we will make conditional offers of a sixth
form place to applicants. These offers are conditional on
final GCSE grades. For some applicants we will consider
making unconditional offers of a place.
All sixth form applicants holding conditional offers of a
place are required to provide copies of their statements
of GCSE results (or equivalent) as soon as they are
published to confirm their place at the College.
Provisional confirmation of A-level subjects is requested
in the Lent term when the relevant options information
booklet is made available to those who have accepted a
place.
INTRODUCTION NORMAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION PROCEDURE
3
It is anticipated that any pupil beginning an A-level
programme at the College will choose A-level options in
subjects where they obtain some of their highest grades.
For some A-level subjects there may be GCSE grade
recommendations in order to access that A- level
subject.
If you are applying after December 2020, it would be
advantageous for parents to provide an email address of
the appropriate member of staff to whom the College
should write for a reference. Offers of places from 1
December 2020 onwards are based on receipt of a
satisfactory reference and predicted GCSE grades being
received from your present school.
The following scholarships are offered to new pupils
entering the College in the sixth form:
Academic incl the Professor Soddy Award
Art
Art Textiles
Design & Technology
Drama
Music
Sport
Please note that in line with most top independent
schools, the majority of awards given at Eastbourne
College will be between 5 per cent and 20 per cent of
the day or boarding fee, but more may be offered (up
to a maximum of 50 per cent).
The Professor Soddy award is an academic award for
highly talented individuals and provides an award of 100
per cent of the day or boarding fee.
All scholarships may be supplemented on a means-
tested basis and in exceptional circumstances this funding
can extend beyond the normal 60 per cent bursary limit.
For awards with significant financial benefit, we may ask
a family to complete a means tested bursary application
form.
Whereas candidates for all other disciplines should
normally be predicted a GCSE average of 6 and above,
we expect potential academic scholarship candidates to
have all 7-9 predictions at GCSE from their current
school as well as a very positive reference.
For all potential scholars we look for academic leadership
and intellectual curiosity. We try to distinguish the bright
from the well drilled, the inspired from the effective and
we aim to uncover flair.
Scholarship candidates who are not successful are
nevertheless normally offered a place at the College
subject to gaining the external entry requirements at
GCSE; all pupils who are offered a scholarship, regardless
of the discipline, must also fulfil these same requirements
in order to take up their place and their award. Academic
scholars will be expected to meet or exceed their
predicted grades.
Please contact the admissions office for the relevant link
to the online application form. For candidates who have
yet to register with the College, please also complete a
registration form (available upon request or online) and
return it together with the registration fee of £100. The
registration fee for Professor Soddy applicants is waived.
Ideally all scholarship candidates should have visited the
College prior to the scholarship assessments.
The closing date for receipt of entries is Friday
16 October 2020. On submission of your online
scholarship application, your current headteacher will be
automatically contacted for a confidential reference
which will include your GCSE predicted grades. We will
then invite short-listed candidates to the assessments at
the end of October (ie in the first term of Year 11).
Please make sure that your headteacher is aware that
we will be sending an electronic reference request to
him / her on your behalf. All references must be
returned by 22 October. Any delay in receiving a
completed reference may jeopardise your scholarship
application.
In keeping with regulations governing all HMC schools,
parents and candidates will be informed of the results
after 1 December and should respond within one week
of the postmark date.
SCHOLARSHIP ENTRY
4
Please be aware that the dates and formats for the
assessments may be subject to change due to the
ongoing restrictions as a result of Covid-19. These will be
communicated upon invitation to the assessments.
The closing date for all scholarship applications is Friday
16 October 2020.
* if candidates are successful in the academic / Professor
Soddy exams, they will be invited to attend an interview
and possibly an aptitude test between Saturday 14 -
Saturday 21 November 2020.
Bursaries are separate from scholarship awards. They
can be made available where financial means dictate and
can add to scholarship award amounts. They are all
means-tested, according to the guidelines laid down by
the Charity Commission, and parents are asked to
complete a financial circumstances form, available upon
request from the admissions office.
Prospective pupils should be registered with the College
before an application for a bursary or scholarship is
made. If parents have applied for a scholarship and wish
also to apply for a bursary, they should submit a
completed application by Friday 16 October 2020. If
parents are not applying for a scholarship, the deadline
for submission is ideally by Friday 13 November 2020.
Bursary awards are reviewed and determined in the
order they are received.
Enquiries should be made to the admissions office in
the first instance. Please return all documentation
electronically or by secure postal delivery to the
Admissions Office, Eastbourne College, Old Wish Road,
Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN21 4JY.
Bursaries are not eligible to parents applying from
overseas.
The College expects potential academic scholarship
candidates to have all 7-9 predictions at GCSE from
their current school as well as a very positive reference.
Successful candidates have the privilege of joining the
academic enrichment programme run exclusively for
scholars (and other pupils by invitation) in the senior part
of the school. Members benefit from a programme of
support, monitoring, talks, encouragement and visits, and
are expected to participate actively at the top end of
their classes, not only for their own benefit but for the
academic benefit of those around them.
The academic scholarship assessment will consist of a
one hour written examination in three of the below
subjects:
Biology
Chemistry
Classical Civilisation*
Economics*
English Literature
French
Geography
German
Classical Greek
History
Latin
Maths
Physics
Politics*
Religious Studies / Philosophy and Theology

subjects) upon request from the admissions office on
[email protected] once you have
submitted your application.
For more information or for advice on the best options
and combinations for individual candidates, please
contact the admissions office well before the application
deadline.

The academic examinations will take place on Saturday
7 November 2020 at the College. If a candidate is
successful in the examinations, they will be invited to
attend an interview and possibly an aptitude test
between Saturday 14 - 21 November 2020. During their
time on campus, candidates will be able to meet pupils
and staff, and enjoy the College surrounds.
Results will be announced after 1 December 2020.
Professor Soddy awards (named after the eminent
former pupil and Nobel Prize winner in chemistry) are
available to pupils joining Year 12 from the state-
maintained school sector, joining as a day or boarding
pupil in September 2021.
This award scheme is open to any exceptionally gifted
academic pupils who wish to join the sixth form and who
will gain from, and contribute to, the academic soul of
the school as well as school life in general.
We are looking for gifted pupils from across the country.
The awards will cover 100 per cent of the fees and in
some cases, additional costs at the College.
In summary, the eligible criteria for Professor Soddy
award candidates are those pupils who:
are currently at a state-maintained school
in the top academic cohort of their school
highly-motivated and highly-appraised
predicted at least eight GCSE grades 8-9 by their
current school
All candidates will nominate three subjects for
examination and these should be a candidate’s
strongest subjects, they may be the subjects the pupil
wishes to study at A-level or they may be the subjects
that will show the candidate’s academic ability in the best
light.
A candidate’s current school will automatically receive
a request for a reference on the back of an
application, unless specifically discussed otherwise. The
reference will ask for academic and character
information.
A shortlist of candidates will be invited to the College to
sit examinations in their three chosen subjects on 7
November 2020. If successful on the examination day,
candidates will then be invited to the College for an
individual interview with a senior member of staff and
possibly an aptitude test. The date for these interviews
will be between Saturday 14 – 21 November.
The list of subjects available for assessment can be
found under the academic scholarships section of this
booklet and on the application form. If there are other
subjects a candidate would like to be assessed in,
please contact the admissions office. A candidate may also
be asked to bring or send us examples of recently
assessed work.
Successful candidates will have access to a programme
of enrichment to challenge and stimulate academic
endeavours:
subject specific enrichment programme
member of Oxbridge / Medics / Ivy League
application programme
Member of the Casson Society (senior academic
forum for pupils to lead discussions on their
particular area of interest)
support, monitoring and encouragement required
to participate actively at the top of your classes
dedicated member of staff to mentor
The College is extremely proud of its award holders, of
what they represent and of their achievements. Our
expectations include the requirements to pursue
excellence in all that you do, to participate fully in the life
of the College, to encourage, enable and enrich others
in the classroom and in the wider community, to display
personal integrity and to persevere through challenges.
The closing date for Professor Soddy academic
scholarship entries is Friday 16 October 2020.
The assessment will be held alongside the assessments
for all academic award candidates and will take place on
Saturday 7 November 2020 at the College and results
will be announced after 1 December.
Family financial circumstances may need to be reviewed
through a means-tested bursary process for successful
candidates.
6
Unsuccessful Professor Soddy academic award
candidates can be automatically considered for an
academic scholarship.
Eastbourne College is very fortunate to have a number
of named awards that, dependent on availability, can be
awarded to sixth form scholarship candidates.
Any named award recipients will normally be identified
during the sixth form academic scholarship assessment
process. Candidates will have the opportunity of
nominating which named award they would like to be
considered for alongside their academic scholarship
application. Candidates for named academic awards
should meet the criteria for the academic scholarship
and will be assessed as a potential academic scholar.
However, it is possible for a candidate to be offered a
named award, and not be a successful academic scholar,
in recognition of their passion and interest in a specific
area.
A named award:
is awarded for two-years for a place in the sixth
form
will be given to a pupil who would not otherwise
have the opportunity to benefit from a College
education and who has applied for a scholarship;
this may involve completing some financial means
testing
will be given to someone who is able to
demonstrate initiative and the pursuit of excellence
in the specific area/s that the award is being offered
in
will be given to someone who is ambitious,
determined, hard-working and keen to make the
most of the other opportunities on offer at the
College. They would be expected to contribute to
and be fully involved in the life of the school
recipient will be required to write a report on the
progress they have made at the end of the Lower
Sixth and Upper Sixth years. This report should
focus on the way in which they have used their
time at the College to develop their academic
or other interests. Any courses or experiences
during holiday time and related to furthering
their studies will be encouraged.
Bernard Drake award
The Bernard Drake award has been initiated and funded
by a former College pupil who went on to study
economics at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. It has been
set up in recognition of the inspirational teaching of
Bernard Drake who joined the Eastbourne College staff
in 1967, introduced economics as a stand-alone subject
and became the first head of a new economics
department in 1970 until his retirement in 1996. The
department continues to thrive and is one of the
College’s most successful academic departments. This
award will be given to an academic scholar who
demonstrates exceptional academic talent, who has a
passion and interest in pursuing a career linked to
economics and who can be an inspiration to others.
Scoresby-Jackson science award
The Scoresby-Jackson science award is a result of a
generous legacy from the will of Thomas Scoresby-
Jackson who was a pupil at the College from 1925 to
1929. The Scoresby family, late of Whitby, Yorkshire,
were well-known for their exploration of the polar
regions of the globe and Mr Scoresby-Jackson wished
to help pupils to study science subjects at A level.
Academic scholarship candidates who wish to study at
least three science subjects at A-level will be
considered and ideally they will go on to read a
science-related degree at university. As well as the
natural sciences, mathematics and design and
technology count as sciences for this purpose.
Candidates who are able to demonstrate initiative and
the pursuit of excellence will be considered and the
award will be given to the strongest eligible candidate.
SIXTH FORM NAMED ACADEMIC AWARDS
7
The Denso award
Winn and Coales (Denso) Ltd is a multi-faceted
international organization with a focus on engineering
and manufacturing. The parent organization was founded

and promote engineering knowledge and skills in schools
and David Winn, CEO, has kindly donated funds to the
College for this award. The Denso award will be available
to sixth form pupils who have a desire to pursue a career

to innovation and development.
The company and the College are committed to
developing the best possible work experience and career
opportunities for pupils interested in engineering, utilising
the College’s wider relationship with Winn and Coales.
The award should be awarded to an individual who
wouldn’t ordinarily be able to attend the College.

DESIGN SCHOLARSHIPS: ART TEXTILES
DESIGN SCHOLARSHIPS: DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
9
Assessments will take place on either Tuesday
10 November or Wednesday 11 November 2020 at
the College or by arrangement and results will be
announced after 1 December.
Successful candidates should be working towards a 7-9
at drama GCSE, are normally expected to study drama
at A level, and must fully commit to co- curricular drama
and productions at the College. In addition to the
award, scholars will receive free tickets to all
professional drama events at the College, which they
are normally expected to attend and they will benefit
from a programme of support, monitoring and
encouragement. They will also be offered free LAMDA
duologue classes.
The College is happy to support drama scholars who
achieve professional engagements. If they wish to be
involved in external amateur productions, this needs to
be on the understanding that it is in the pupil’s best
interests in terms of time management and academic
studies, and that such external amateur productions do
not have a significant impact on College
commitments and directed time (e.g. sports fixtures). In
such circumstances, the College’s judgement and
decision will be final.
Drama at Eastbourne is an inclusive discipline, both in
and out of the classroom. Apart from the practical
experience of bringing text to life on stage through
acting and directing, expertise is also developed in a
number of areas including script-writing, set-design,
lighting, sound and costume. While most candidates will
offer acting as their skill, those with a particular and
specialist talent in other areas are very welcome to
apply for an award.
For acting candidates, the assessment is likely to
consist of:
a one-hour written assessment about a recent
production seen
a practical assessment involving all candidates as a
group; each candidate is expected in turn to deliver
a prepared speech (max 3 mins) taken from a
drama text, performed in character though not in
costume. The text can be classical or
contemporary, but not a poem or extract from a
novel
a group improvisation where candidates will be
asked to perform spontaneously to a given stimulus
(probably together with current College drama
students)
an interview with the Director of Drama and /
or any other assessor, during which candidates
should also provide evidence of involvement to
date, including photographs and programmes of
professional youth theatre or school productions
within the last three year
For technical candidates, the assessment is likely to
consist of:
a presentation of their aptitude and interest. This
could be in the form of a model-box and
photographs of a set, a costume portfolio
containing designs and sketches, a portfolio or DVD
showing photographic evidence of lighting designs,
or DVD/CD evidence of sound design.
an interview with the Director of Drama and / or
any other assessor, during which candidates should
also provide evidence of involvement to date, in the
form of designs, drawings, photographs,
programmes etc
Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to
arrange an informal meeting with the Director of
Drama early in the Michaelmas term of Year 11 in
order to receive guidance and advice before the
assessment. The Director of Drama is Mrs Claudine
Sinnett ([email protected]).
The closing date for drama scholarship entries is Friday
16 October 2020.
As well as the general reference requested by the
College from their current school, candidates may wish
to provide additional references from other relevant
referees.
Auditions will take place on Friday 13 November 2020
at the College or by arrangement and results will be
announced after 1 December.
DRAMA SCHOLARSHIPS
10
Successful candidates should be working towards a 7-9
at music GCSE and will normally be expected to study
music at A-level (but if not they must fully commit to co-
curricular music). All music scholars are expected to
make an active and positive contribution to the musical
life of the College, both as a soloist and in ensemble
work with, for example, choirs, orchestras and
productions. Music scholars are also expected to sing in
the Chapel Choir, which includes some Sunday services.
In addition to the award candidates will normally
receive 2 hours of free music tuition at the College on
their instruments (which can include singing), benefit
from a programme of support, monitoring and
encouragement. Instrumental tuition will normally only
be offered by the College’s own specialist teachers and
during the regular school day.
A scholarship candidate would normally be expected to
offer two instruments - one of which may be singing -
or two instruments as well as singing. The second
instrument may only be at beginners or intermediate
level.
Choral scholarships can be made to those who offer
singing as a first instrument. An organ scholarship is also
available. This position gives valuable experience in
school services and choir accompaniment in Chapel,
with the possibility of playing during external visits to
other churches.
The assessment will consist of:
two contrasting pieces on the first instrument (it is
not necessary for candidates to have passed any
grade examination, but the standard expected is
grade seven on their first instrument)
one prepared piece on the second (and third, if any)
instrument
a sight-reading test
aural tests
an interview with the Director of Music and / or
other assessors
Candidates will be expected to discuss their musical
studies and interests, including their involvement in
musical groups and activities.
As well as the general reference requested by the
College from their current school, candidates may wish
to provide additional references from instrumental
teachers and other relevant referees.
Candidates are welcome to bring their own
accompanist to the examination or supply the
Director of Music with copies of the music in advance.
Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to
arrange an informal meeting with the Director of
Music early in the Michaelmas term of Year 11 in
order to receive guidance and advice before the
assessment. The Director of Music is Mr Dan Jordan
(dkjordan@eastbourne- college.co.uk)
The closing date for music scholarship entries is Friday
16October 2020.
Auditions will take place on either Thursday 12
November or Friday 13 November 2020 at the
College or by arrangement and results will be
announced after 1 December.
We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate
exceptional talents in one of the College’s core team
sports:
cricket (boys and girls)
hockey (boys and girls)
netball (girls)
rugby (boys)
tennis (boys and girls)
However, exceptional talent in other sports, (triathlon,
athletics, football, riding, golf, and swimming) will be
considered and should be discussed on a case by case
basis with the Director of Sport.
Successful candidates are awarded a general sport
scholarship (i.e. not an award in any particular sport). Any
named award winners will receive that title on top of their
general sport scholarship title.
These named awards are: Peter Bibby cricket award,
Trevor Pescud tennis award, and Robin Harrison rugby
award.
11
Candidates should state their choice of sport(s) to be
assessed in priority order on the application form, up to
a maximum of two. A second sport needs to be at a
strong competitive level at school, club or higher
standard. If applying for two sports the College may only
require or choose one sport to be assessed.
If candidates are unsure which sports to opt for and /
or in which order, or whether or not to indicate a
second sport at all, they should contact the Director of
Sport, Mr Mike Harrison (mtharrison@eastbourne-
college.co.uk).
Successful candidates may well be playing or training at
county level or higher in their chosen sport(s) although
this is not a requirement or a guarantee for a
scholarship. As well as the general reference requested
by the College from their current school, candidates
may wish to provide additional references from club
coaches and other relevant referees.
Sport scholars are expected to show leadership and to
make an active and full contribution to the sporting life
of the College, not only through their individual
performance as a member of school teams but also as
role models in their attitude and behaviour as
sportsmen and sportswomen. There is no requirement
to study PE at A level but we do recommend it to those
with strong sports backgrounds.
Regardless of which sports are offered for assessment,
scholars are normally expected to participate in
core College team sports, as the Director of Sport
deems appropriate, throughout the year.
As part of the award, successful candidates will engage
in a development programme designed to maximize
the potential of the award winner. The programme will
consist of a personalised conditioning programme,
nutritional advice and mentoring to help balance their
sporting and school life, and invitations to guest
speaker events.

provided within reason and following agreement and
consultation with the College to attend representative
trials and external specialist training.

balance and agility) a brief interview with the Director of Sport and / or
Heads of Sport in which candidates are expected
to show an awareness of current issues regardingtheir own sports and sport in general, and to
demonstrate their commitment and ambition
If a candidate is unable to be assessed on the day for
certain reasons (e.g. injury) the College reserves the right
to make an award based on prior knowledge of the
candidate, observations in the field, video evidence, etc.
when compared with other candidates.
Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to
arrange an informal meeting with the Director of Sport
in Year 10 or early in the Michaelmas term of Year 11
in order to receive guidance and advice before the
assessment.

the week commencing Monday 9 November 2020
or by arrangement. Results will be announced after 1

What is a scholarship?
A scholarship is the recognition of academic, sporting
or creative excellence, following assessment by the
College. Scholars receive remission on school fees and
importantly, tailored coaching and support in the sixth
form.
What is the difference between a scholarship and a
bursary?
Both give financial assistance but are assessed
differently. Scholarship awards are given to pupils who
have demonstrated excellence and ability in their
chosen scholarship area, whereas a bursary can be
given in recognition of financial need and can be
applied for any pupil who is registered with the
College, regardless of ability. A bursary can also
supplement a scholarship award amount.
Bursaries are means-tested, so parents are asked to
complete a financial circumstances form which is then
assessed by the Finance Director in accordance with
the Charity Commission guidelines. Financial
circumstances forms are available on request from the
admissions office.
If a scholarship is offered and we also qualify for a
bursary, are the two amounts simply added together?
No. Only the highest value normally applies but the pupil
will always receive the relevant scholarship title and any
additional entitlements. See an example illustration
below.
Which scholarship should I apply for?
Advice should be sought from your current school or
coaches/mentors, but the Head or Director of the
relevant department at the College would be happy to
offer guidance.
Where can I find out about A-level subject choices?
Please consult our booklet entitled Sixth Form
Choices for more details about specific subjects.
Where can I get more general information and advice
about sixth form entry?
Please contact us if you have any questions about sixth
form entry or scholarships. The admissions office can
be contacted on 01323 452323 or email
If I am successful with my scholarship application, will I
be able to take any combination of A-level subjects?
You will be able to take any combination of A-level
subjects as listed in this document or agreed with us.
Will an award be conditional on my final GCSE grades?
For academic scholars, including Professor Soddy
award holders, the award will be dependent on you
obtaining either the same or higher GCSE grades than
your predictions.
For non-academic scholars, your award will remain
conditional on you meeting or exceeding our entrance
requirements.
Who is eligible to apply for the Professor Soddy
awards?
All Year 11 pupils who meet the entrance criteria,
including being at a state-maintained UK school, are
eligible to apply.
I am travelling some distance for my scholarship
assessment. Will I be able to stay overnight at the
College?
Yes, within reason, the College will aim to support
overnight accommodation at the College.
How many scholarship awards will there be?
There is no set number of awards to be given; the
College reserves the right to determine what the right
level and amount of awards should be in any given year.
How will I know if my family’s financial circumstances
will need to be reviewed as part of the Professor
Soddy award process, and what does this mean?
We will notify you if we need to review any financial
circumstances. This will not be an onerous request or
process, but will involve our finance team requesting
information to do with family income, expenses and
assets.
Example illustration:
Means-tested bursary of 30 per cent + scholarship of 15 per cent = total fee reduction of 30 per cent only (but
scholarship title and provision stands)
