SLD4 HUSTON RElURNS

At this t ime of Thsnksgiving we here in Honolulu heve a special r eason to be thankful - the safe return from a Japanese prison camp of our old friend and fellow Standard Oil er Ronald N (SUm) Huston

Slim who 1E1S Sub-oStation Agent on Guam was captured on December 8 1941 (December 7 Hawaiian time) when Guam WlS

invaded by the Japanese ruter spending nearly fllur years in prison camps in Formosa and Kob~ 18 months of which time vias spent in hospital suffering from blood poisoning as Ii result of an infected shrapnel wound in his foot sustained during the pre-invasion bombing of Guam Sl1m arrived at Pearl Harbor on October 10 1945 aboard the U S S Joseph DickmWl None of the 2000 liberated prisoners of war were allowed (lshore but a number of Slims friends ere permitted to visit him on board and th~y report that although he naturally showed signs of his ordeal particularl~- in the matter of los~ of ~veight (he we1t from his normal 220 Ibs to as low as 140 Ibs at one time) he is nevertheless in fairly good shape physic~ and very alert mentally and after a few months r est and an opWrtudty to enjoy some of the comforts of life we all hope that he will be his old self again

All Standard Oilers in the Honolulu District have waited anxiously for news of Slim during his long imprisonment and have rejoiced from time to time over the little scraps of news which have come to us from Radio Tokyo and other sources and it is dth relief and the deeJJest of heartfelt thankfulness that we say

wELCOME BiCK SLIM AND ALOHA
