INTRODUCTION ENVE3601 follows on from ENVE2602. The aim of the class is to give you a quantitative knowledge of the fluid dynamics of both freshwater and marine environments. Topics covered include the investigation of mixing processes in open channel and pipe flows, wave mechanics, density stratification effects, mixing in the environment and jets & plumes. The course will apply the differential form of the equations of motion to describe fluid flows and the focus is on the underlying physical principles that govern fluid flows in the natural environment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
1. Quantitatively describe the dependence of open-channel flow on the bottom roughness, the cross-section, the Reynolds number and the Froude number.
2. Distinguish between molecular diffusion, turbulent diffusion and shear dispersion and apply these concepts to quantify mass transport in open-channel flow.
3. Use both the single mixing event model and the dynamic model to estimate the de-stabilizing effects of shear in a stratified fluid.
4. Apply your knowledge of plume, jet and buoyant jets to estimate quantities such as the dilution of an emitted contaminant.

LABORATORIES There are 2 laboratory sessions:
• Open-channel flow • Tilting tube
They are held in the Hydraulics Lab (G.95) in the main Engineering building. The labs are related to, but do not directly follow on from, the lecture material. They involve concepts that may not be covered in class; the lab demonstrator will run a short tutorial before each session. You are required to participate in both laboratory sessions and to write up both laboratory reports. Laboratory timetables will be posted and groups will be listed on the notice board inside the entrance to the Hydraulics Laboratory. The lab demonstrator is Alexis Espinosa ([email protected])
Before the lab session Instructions for the two laboratories will be posted on the unit website. You must read through the instructions before your lab session. Writing your lab report You are encouraged to use the unit website calendar to check the due dates of lab reports. UNIT SCHEDULE Note: The intended schedule for this unit is shown in the table below.
