My Concept
After researching about the American west and picturesque I have discovered
that there are many opinions on what it known to be a landscape.
An extensive problem with the world, is that nature is getting destroyed by
man kind to generate money in the short term, but this has a long term effect
on the environmental impact.
A proposal for an Airport in the Thames Estuary has been considered, to
suppress the congestion from existing Airports and to help economic growth.
By constructing the Airport, many factors of the environment will be damaged
such as animals habitats, protected birds, loss of the natural countryside, air
pollution and many more.
My series of 3 photographs will portray the destruction of the natural
landscape in which the Airport would be placed.

Research
I have discovered many artists that photographed from the American West.
Ansel Adams photographed the landscape in a way to make it look purified anduntouched, where as Stephen Shore demonstrated the Land being dominated by mankind in a way that it was not majorly important to humans anymore.
Even though these photographs were taking at the same place, there is huge contrastbetween the two
I further discovered about man taking over nature, to try a portray a message to theviewer about how nature is being harmed

Robert Adams
Robert Adams is an American photographer who wanted to change the
landscape of the American West.
Adams has a sense of hope for natures persistence against man's
destruction of what was the wilderness and his photographs emphasizes
the beauty of nature in the face of humans persistent use of land.

His black a white photos seem to show the
brutality of what man kind can do to nature.
The photos show the destruction of the
wilderness and with trees being imposing and
powerful, to weak and vulnerable.
I like how the object that is destroying nature is inthe photograph. This makes me feel shocked to
witness, as I can view how the destruction is
being produced.
This inspired me to use an object in my series of
photographs that show destruction to the land.

Richard Misrach
Richard Misrach is a Contemporary photographer that helped pioneer the
renaissance of colour photography
Misrach is fascinated by earth forms and produces a politically-charged
series of works that demonstrate the damaging effects on the earth and
environment
"Bomb Crater and Destroyed Convoy" 1986
A bomb crater is filled with
crimson liquid where the
earth itself seems to bleed.

and will harm the natural

Richard Misrach's photographs show the shocking
realisation of what man kind can do to the world.
For my series of photographs I want the viewers to have
an understanding of the message I am trying to portray.Richard Misrach has produced images showing the after
effects of man destroying nature.
As I am photographing about the possible arrival of Cliffe
Airport I wanted to show the natural land with a shockingclue of what could happen in the future.

Miles CoolidgeAfter researching techniques by many artists I was drawn to the use of minature models, to
represent a message Miles Coolidge is a Canadian-American photographic artist, who focuses on landscape and
architecture.
He engages his viewing space with his use of scale, in combination with the subject matter.
From his "Safetyville Coolidge documents on the spaces where human life seem to be non
existent.
Images seem to be of large scaled buildings and houses, but on a closer inspection, they areinfact miniature sized models. The miniature town was built in California to teach children
about pedestrian safety. Safety Ville 1996
The way Coolidge uses scale to make something look
life like really inspires me by the use of subtle hints
used.
I explored how to produce models that look life like
and the different camera angles I would need to use

Thomas Wrede
Wrede produces keeps the viewer guessing by using trickery to the eye.
He creates scenes with trucks and buildings, and places them in a way where they do notbelong
The images seem abnormal and bizarre but with a spectacular awe about the vast land the
viewer can see around the object.
The viewer is encouraged to search for evidence that concludes the image, to believe objects
are real.

I really like the idea of tricking the viewer, by making something fake look real. The
way Thomas Wrede has produced this really interests me and I would like to try out
this technique myself.
These images are
taken with a
digital Canon IXUS
camera. I have
used toy cars to
take photographs
of, to try and
make them look
realistic, and to
find put which
angle is best touse.

Using the inspiration from Thomas Wrede and Miles Coolidge, I will place a model airport in Cliffe
marshes and photograph it. I will do this in a way that will show destruction to the land and
nature, using the inpiration of Richard Misrach and Robert Adams

Elger Esser
I looked about how I could portray pollution and I discovered Elger Esser
German photographer that finds stillness and beauty in the most unlikely places
In most of his landscape photographs with the use of filters the light is soft and the
use of a green and yellow tone creates the effect of fog and pollution.
'Ponte A Tressa II' 2002Esser portrays his
photographs in a way that
demonstrates natures purity
and beauty. By having scenes
of a landscape with a human
object present, promotes theidea that man is damaging
nature.
The way colour is used will help
me to demonstrate pollution ordestruction in my images

My locations for my models had to be inCliffe, so I searched for the more natural
places.

I took my model Airport to Cliffe Marshes
and took photos, to determine what lighting
would be best and what angles I could use.
In a few of my test shots I used a green filter
to show pollution like Elgar Esser.
After a group discussion on my work, I
discovered that the photographs looked too
cluttered and the message was too obvious.

About the Airport
Cliffe emerged as a potential Airport in 2002 as the marsh land is very vast.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson has indicated the idea to call the new
Airport 'Boris Land' and has used 1.4 million pounds promoting it.
Facts
It is safer for a plane to take-off and land in water, than in a built up area Plans for high speed rail, links passengers to London or South East
four runways will be built, with a potential fifth that would only be used at
night
Cliffe has good sufficient land
Few people would be displaced by the airports construction
Low numbers of people would be affected by aircraft noise

What the future airport may
look like.
White papers for an airport
Sets out a strategic frameworkfor the development of airport
capacity in the United Kingdom
over the next 30 years, against
the wider context of the air
transport sector.
Sets out a policy framework
which will inform decisions on
future planning applications, and
against which the relevant public
bodies, airport operators and
airlines can plan ahead.
Sets out the conclusions of the
Government, and of the
administrations where
appropriate, on the case for
future expansion at airports
across the country.

Advantages and disadvantages of the
AirportAdvantages-
Flights could arrive and depart at all hours.
A high-speed rail link to London with a journey time of around 20 minutes would
encourage more passengers to reach the airport using public transport.
It would be possible to reach the airport from terminals in both Kent and Essex,
diminishing the amount of new traffic and congestion imposed on either county.
Disadvantages-
The construction costs of the airport alone would be large. These were estimated
at 11.5bn plus
There is a risk of bird strike, higher for coastal sites, lower for offshore sites.
Building the airport would destroy the habitat of thousands of wetland birds.
Proposals rely on using capacity on High-Speed 1, which may be scarce.

IMPACTS:
noise-It may be possible to ensure that the size of the population living withinthe 57 dB noise contour is either zero or very small
Land Take- If no existing land were taken for airport construction then impactsincluding: the loss of Green Belt and other designated land, open land andrecreational sites as well as residential property and commercial propertywould be avoided
Ecological impacts: Offshore site would have an effect on tidal flows and riverchannels which could have an adverse impact on marine ecology
Safety risks: The DFT's report (A study on the potential safety risks from birdsat and around a new airport at Cliffe Marshes and measures for mitigatingthose risks) identified that the risks of an aircaft hull loss would be greater forthe Cliffe site.
Flooding- Compensation dredging would be required to create a new flow
area equivalent to the area of the blockage caused by an airport island, butthere would remain the possibility of increased flood risk along the shores ofthe Thames estuary and its tributaries.
Air pollution-kerosene and other aviation fuels to power jet engines andpropellers means carbon dioxide emissions, among other types of pollution.

Contact sheets
After looking at my contact sheets of my miniature
models in a landscape, I felt that the message I
wanted to portray was not clear or powerful enough.
And I wanted to make my images more shocking with
use of a subtle clue about an airport being present.
I placed the models in the landscape environment
in a way that was more subtle. Instead of the
whole airport, I only used parts of the model

After researching about airports I came across a website, about a lady named Denise Mattox.
Denises husband was a musician and she toured with him around the world taking photographs
of her travels. One photograph in particular has given me inspiration for my project.
The photograph was taken
when Denise was
travelling on an aeroplane.
As she was looking out her
window she could see the
shadow of the flying
object. She captured an
image of it reflecting off a
natural landscape.
The idea of capturing the shadow of a aeroplane on a
beautiful landscape will make the viewers aware that an
airport is nearby, and could ultimately pollute the natural
environment.

Final Idea
With the inspiration of Denise Mattox, Richard Misrach , Robert Adams and Elger Esser
I managed to create photographs portraying a beautiful landscape, with the use of
shadow from a plane I created to represent man kinds domination nature.
I cut out a stencil of a plane. And with the
use of different exposure, I managed to
create a shadow effect on the paper
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZjbCF1-4Alo/UqRclyQn6RI/AAAAAAAAA3g/jz-NyeZM4Js/s1600/img014.jpghttp://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9xvbKiH6RDY/UqRbw19MwaI/AAAAAAAAA3Q/Wt8ixuYK0Wo/s1600/img009bb.jpg8/13/2019 Environment Powerpoint

I chose 3 different background images
for my final photographs.
The backgrounds I have chosen are all in
different colours, to portray pollution that
will be created by the airport

My Final Series of Prints
I have created a series of
photographs portraying man
taking over nature, from theproposal of Cliffe Airport.
I have used colour images so
that the photographs hold a
feel of beauty but destruction
at the same time.
The shadow is the subtle hint
that a plane is flying over
Cliffe, and this would be the
reality if the Airport came to
action.

I used a photograph mostly
consisting of the as the
colours seemed like the trees
are on fire. This also
demonstrates what the land
would go through during
industry construction.

dark so that the
viewer would focus onthe sky.

Critical Analysis
The major issue I had with this project was that my camera knowledge was very low, so I didnt
know what camera or lens would be best appropriate to portray my model idea. I found it very hard to take the photographs I intended too of my model, as the shots I wanted were
not produced. This was because of difficulty with the camera and still trying to understand aboutthe light meter.
Some of my model shots were really disappointing as the F stop I used was too low, and the modelbecame blurry and out of focus.
For my final shots of my model, I developed good knowledge of the light meter and the macro lensthat was needed. I didnt have an assistant to help me set up my scenes, so I had to use sellotape
and the use of small boxes and twigs which I found quite difficult. Time Management was also a major issue, as when I changed my idea, I didnt give myself enough
time to research more thoroughly as I would have liked too.
I also would have liked to of taken more photographs of my model. This would have beenbeneficial, so that the techniques I had learnt could be seen in my photographs.
In the dark room, when I produced my final prints this was very difficult and stressful experience. When I discovered what exposures were needed I could then create my final print. This was somuch more harder than I first thought, as when I was making my full prints in the dark the stencil
had to stay very still as It was being exposed. When I printed the image I discovered that the planewas exposed in the wrong place, or that it was too sharp and didnt look realistic. To do my finalprints I had to use a whole box of paper which was frustrating as the paper is very expensive
Overall I believe that my photographs portray the message that I was trying to get across. I thinkthey show a good representation of what man is doing to nature. I am pleased that I changed mymodel idea, as the viewer would be unsure on what they are discovering in my photographs, andwhen they know the context, they would be very shocked.
