Letter from the Board Chair

Dear Friends,This has been an exciting and successful year for Environmental Advocates of New York, as we continue to build support for environmental protections and initiatives. Our success relies on support from advocates like you and our partners around the state. Your commitment, both financial or otherwise, continues to sustain the important work we do on behalf of our shared environment and the many communities across New York. From the Board of Directors and the staff—thank you!

As regularly reported in the media, what happens in the halls of government impacts you, your family, your community and the environment. Every day, we are working to ensure that our collective call for a cleaner, greener New York is heard by elected officials. Environmental Advocates knows how to get things

done at the local, state, and federal level. We operate in every corner of the state—with partners from government to the grassroots to the private sector—in an effort to protect and improve our environment.

In 2017, we built support around the bold Climate and Community Protection Act that would set New York on the path to 100% renewables by 2050 while creating green jobs

and more vibrant communities. We also pushed for change to the State Constitution to include an ‘Environmental Bill of Rights’ to guarantee a right to clean air and water and a healthy environment for all. Despite broad support for these efforts, more will need to be done in the coming year to secure the passage of these initiatives into law.

Environmental Advocates also launched a discussion with our stakeholders to set ambitious strategic goals for the organization and create greater urgency and political support for the policy changes that are needed. Among other things, our new strategic vision will have three areas of focus: clean drinking water for all, clean and reliable transportation for all, and clean and vibrant communities for all. This is an exciting and meaningful development for Environmental Advocates and we are eager to share more details with you.

The organization has had much success in our nearly 50 years of being your voice for the environment, conservation, wildlife, and public health in New York State. At this critical juncture, what we do is more important than ever, with the urgency of the moment being felt across the globe. We need partners like you to continue to advocate for essential environmental protections while helping us build momentum in making New York a true environmental leader.
