• Overview of the EA Process
• Describe how Kitselas is engaged
• Overview of LNG projects currently in the EA Process
• How concerns and views about the potential impacts of the proposed
Projects and the Application Review process are addressed
• Discuss how potential impacts to Aboriginal Interests are identified
and assessed in the EA;
• How Kitselas Department of Lands and Resources are working with
proponents and the EA process.

Purpose of Environmental Assessment
• Focussed review, early in life cycle of a major proposed
project
• Assess potential significant adverse environmental,
economic, social, heritage & health effects
• Identify ways to prevent or reduce adverse effects
• Specify terms and conditions in an EA Certificate, if issued
• Strategic rather than detailed level of assessment

First Nations Engagement in the EA Process
First Nations consultation is a key
component of EA:
• EAO engages in direct government-to-
government consultation with First Nations; and
• EAO requires proponents to conduct meaningful
consultation with First Nations.

• Provides funding for Kitselas Lands and Resources to:
– Employ community liaison officers
– Employ staff
– Hold community meetings with proponents
– Participate in the EA process
– Conduct Traditional Use Studies
– Employ expert knowledge
• Does not indicate support for the project, but enables the
Department to form a decision based on evidence
gathered through review of project documents, field work
and meeting with proponents
