Introduction

As the capital city, Dhaka has all of the urban privileges, lying in the heart of Bangladesh. It is one of the

oldest cities of the Indian sub continent. Very well known as the City of Mosque, Dhaka enjoys a

moderate climate. At the present time, it is worldly known as an over populated city with huge population

density, crime & pollution.

Dhaka: At a glance

Location :

Dhaka is situated at 23420N 902230E / 23.7N 90.375E, on the eastern banks of the river Buriganga.

It lies on the lower reaches of the Ganges Delta and covers a total area of 153.84 square kilometers(59.40 sq mi). It consists of seven principal thanas Dhanmondi, Kotwali, Motijheel, Paltan, Ramna,

Mohammadpur, Sutrapur, Tejgaon, and 16 auxiliary thanas Gulshan, Lalbagh, Mirpur, Pallabi, Shah Ali,

Turaag, Sabujbagh, Dhaka Cantonment, Demra, Hazaribagh, Shyampur, Badda, Kafrul, Kamrangir char,

Khilgaon and Uttara. In total the city has 130 wards and 725 mohallas.Dhaka district has an area of

1463.60 square kilometers (565 sq mi); and is bounded by the districts of Gazipur, Tangail, Munshiganj,

Rajbari, Narayanganj and Manikganj.

Problems of Dhaka city:

As a modern city & being the capital, Dhaka is suffering from some major problems like:

Futile urbanization

Extreme Population Growth

Ineffective Solid Waste Management Unplanned and Swift Industrial Growth

Inefficient Sewage Management

Slum Development

Poverty and Migration

Lack of Awareness

Inadequate Transport and Traffic Management

Non cooperation among core government agencies

Management Constraints

Lack of law enforcement etc

My Neighborhood

I live in Uttara at the north west part of Dhaka. It is under Uttara thana. This is the end of Dhaka district. I

was born here, & living here since then. My address is House #01, Road #30, Sector #07, Uttara, Dhaka-

1230.

Methodology

I have collected all data about Dhaka city from Internet. & I have written about my neighborhood from my

personal experience. Beside this, sometimes I had observed the conditions around my place and sometimes I

had talked to the natives about it.

Pollution Sources of My Neighborhood

Uttara is a residential area which is well planned & designed. But even though pollution has found its way to

us here. There are some major sources like :

Noise Pollution:

One of the major problems of this area is noise pollution. Different kinds of diseases are caused by high

frequency sound & noises. It hampers our daily peaceful life.

Sources:

Construction: A Continuous Noise Pollution:

Construction sites are very usual things to us now a days. But extreme noises are produced from this kind of

sites. Piling process, beam launching, foundation, actually all functions here are responsible for creating

huge amount of noise.

RoadTraffic:Uttara lies having the highway of Dhaka Mymenshing road in its heart. This road acts as the connector

between Uttara & the main city. Frequent use of horns, specially hydraulic horns causes unbearable noises.

Schools:

There are so many schools & colleges in my neighborhood . For this reason, a great deal of sound & noises

is made during the class time. At the start & end time bells, vehicles, a huge student & guardian gathering

causes disturbance in the regular life of the families lives nearby.

DVD\ Audio Shops:

Shops of DVD & audio CDs are responsible for noise pollution here in Uttara.

Loudspeakers, Mikes etc:

Use of loudspeakers and mikes is also responsible for noise pollution. During festivals like fair, wedding,

concert, political gathering & for advertising, loud speakers & mikes are used which is completely

disturbing for the local community.

Air Pollution:

Air pollution has become a severe problem for the whole city of Dhaka. But as a native of Uttara, I can say,we may have controlled this situation here. In spite of that some air pollutions are seen here.

Garbage Collection Process:

As I told before, Uttara is a well planned and designed residential town where we have the KALLAYAN

SOMITI to take care of everything related to community development. Garbage collection is a part of their

functions & I have confess that they are doing it very well. So we are almost out of this garbage dump

trouble. But in spite of that, we are being the victim of air pollution only for lack of public consciousness.

Throwing dumps here and there is getting a big trouble for us day by day.

Motor Vehicles:

A huge amount of auto mobiles are causing air pollution. Still there are so many vehicles not using CNG as

fuel. That is why air is being polluted.

Hospital Disposals:

There are so many hospitals in our neighborhood like UTTARA ADHUNIK HASHPATAL

( BANGLADESH MEDICAL COLLEGE ), LAB AID, UTTARA CRECENT HOSPITAL, & other private

Hospitals. These hospitals are maintaining there disposal system but it is not ensured or not checked daily.

Open Manholes and Drains:

Open manholes and drains also pollute the air of this area vaguely.

Construction Sites:Brick dust, Soil dust, cements are causing air pollution. Loose soil is disrupted more when storm occurs and

it causes temporary visual disability.

Water Pollution:

Water pollution is becoming severe here in Uttara. Unawareness of WASA is responsible for that.

Sources:

Water Tanks:

Landlords and developers are using low grade plastic water tanks to lower the cost. These tanks are nothygienic. Inside this tanks water reacts with various chemicals & become poisonous.

Low Quality Purification:

Bleaching powder is being used to purify water at low cost. This powder destroys the fresh water which is

sometimes not drinkable at all.

Destroying Uttara Lake:

Moreover throwing dumps near water source is also responsible for water pollution. Uttara lake is nearly

destroyed for this reason.

Now these are the main problems here at Uttara. This peaceful & beautiful city is loosing her reputation for

some irresponsible acts of some people.

Remarks

Working on this project I have realized that these problems are actually created by us. So public awareness

and more organized steps can save us from ruining our little town. Authorities should be take steps to saveour environment.Guidelines have to be developed for introducing the community monitoring system.Authorities have to be more strict to keep away commercial areas away from residential areas.

Conclusion

Environmental problems are very common through out the world. This time we can not just eradicate this

problem at an instance. We have to come forward to take precautionary steps & aware everyone to keep

Uttara green as alive and peaceful.
