Why I studied Env. Man.
• Interested in this field through studying Geography at High School
• Originally wanted to study planning but changed my mind at the last minute!
• Drawn to the degree by the open ended nature of the career opportunities and broad range of topics covered in the curriculum – you can choose the path you want to go down
• Strong interest in the natural environment through my hobbies
• A chance to positively contribute to global issues
Degree highlights – field trip
A week in North Queensland learning first hand about sustainable development issues in the region – lots of fun!
Degree highlights – group project• Our group looked at the opportunities for
renewable energy at Tangalooma resort on Moreton Island
• Included two trips to stay and research at Tangalooma
• Great experience to prepare you for working in teams in the real world after finishing uni
Degree highlights – placement
Three months full time internship – the most valuable part of the degree. I worked with Redland City Council who then kept me on as a paid employee while I finished uni. The experience kick-started my career.
My job
• Highly diverse work – often driven by changing legislation and business priorities
• Get to work both at the planning and strategic level as well as on-ground projects
• Lots of problem solving involved – technical skills only half the equation and being able to see things from multiple angles is the key
