About Me

• Graduated from UQ in 2010 with a Bachelor of Environmental Management majoring in Sustainable Development

• First worked in local government, then for a number of consulting firms, and then started my own consulting firm– Sorus Group – in March 2014

• Specialise in corporate sustainability, carbon, and energy management

• This means helping business to reduce their environmental impact while also saving money

Why I studied Env. Man.

• Interested in this field through studying Geography at High School

• Originally wanted to study planning but changed my mind at the last minute!

• Drawn to the degree by the open ended nature of the career opportunities and broad range of topics covered in the curriculum – you can choose the path you want to go down

• Strong interest in the natural environment through my hobbies

• A chance to positively contribute to global issues

renewable energy at Tangalooma resort on Moreton Island

• Included two trips to stay and research at Tangalooma

• Great experience to prepare you for working in teams in the real world after finishing uni

Degree highlights – placement

Three months full time internship – the most valuable part of the degree. I worked with Redland City Council who then kept me on as a paid employee while I finished uni. The experience kick-started my career.

My job

• Highly diverse work – often driven by changing legislation and business priorities

• Get to work both at the planning and strategic level as well as on-ground projects

• Lots of problem solving involved – technical skills only half the equation and being able to see things from multiple angles is the key

• Get to lead teams and achieve great outcomes – not just writing reports

• Domestic and international travel opportunities – particular demand in developing countries
