● Examining the Use of Whitespotted Conger Fishing Resources in Tokyo Bay

JRC has been cooperating with Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology to collect basic data with the aim of protecting sustainable marine resources in Tokyo Bay. The two organizations are currently sharing technologies for monitoring the operation of fishing vessels.

Whitespotted congers represent an essential marine resource in Tokyo Bay. As is the case with Japanese eels, however, there are still many questions surrounding their ecology and no farming technologies have been developed yet. The research conducted by Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology focuses on the methods that utilize the information on the operation of f ishing vessels to determine the potential size of whitespotted conger resources in Tokyo Bay with the goal of ensuring a sustainable use of whitespotted conger as a resource.

In FY 2016, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology developed a method for monitoring fishing vessel routes by combining the fishing vessel route data obtained with fixed ground radars (at two sites) developed by JRC and the information from GPS recorders installed on whitespotted conger fishing vessels in operation.

The J-Marine GIS*1, an advanced navigation system developed by JRC, is used for this analysis. *1 Geographic Information System

● Implementation of New International RulesIn November, 2016, the Paris Agreement entered into force, outlining the policies for tackling the

issue of global warming from FY 2020. Although some concerns remain, including the withdrawal of the United States from the agreement, countries across the globe are implementing these new international rules in order to achieve the goal of eliminating all greenhouse gas emissions by the second half of the 21st century. Japan is also aiming for a 26% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by FY 2030 compared to the emission levels in FY 2013. Thus, conventional industrial practices that rely on fossil fuels are about to undergo significant changes.

● Contributions to Environmental Protection with Business Operations and Products

Global environmental protection is therefore an important issue shared by the entire humankind and a responsibility of every company to operate business. In line with the motto of JRC to “help realize a prosperous society by combining our wisdom and creativity to deliver exceptional value,” we are constantly aware of the importance of environmental protection at various stages of our business operations. We strive to protect the global environment, prevent pollution, and conserve nature in order to continue reducing our impact on the environment. We focus our efforts on providing products and services that are safe, reliable, and friendly to the environment to contribute to the creation of a sustainable recycling-oriented society.

● Moving Forward with “One-JRC”Ever since its foundation in 1915, JRC has been relying on the support of all stakeholders

including customers, shareholders, partners, local communities, and employees, enabling us to be a 100-year company. In addition, we are going to build a system to integrate our business operations with Nagano Japan Radio Co., Ltd. and Ueda Japan Radio Co., Ltd. with the aim of reaching a milestone as a 200-year company under the name “One-JRC.” We want to encourage each of our employees to be proactive and take initiative at work without fearing failure. This attitude will represent the basis of our corporate philosophy and the driving force behind our corporate development as we strive to achieve our goals.

● Aiming to Solve Important Global IssuesThe way we decide to deal with domestic and global issues such as environmental problems,

energy policies, dialogs with emerging economies, and population ageing is going to determine our future value as a company and represent one of our social responsibilities. JRC is going to utilize its rich experience, knowledge, and high-level technology in the field of communication and information in order to continue providing high-value products and services that will make a broad contribution to the development of the society. We are going to provide the society with solutions that can help solve important issues.

● Environmental Management System OrganizationOur environmental activities are promoted by top management, led by the highest executive

officers, so that changes in all social trends can be responded to immediately.

● Progress of Our Environmental ActivitiesAfter a philosophy of sustainable development was agreed upon at the 1992 Earth Summit in

Rio de Janeiro, in 1993 we created a new department to promote conservation of the environment. In the beginning, we built our environmental systems based on the British environmental

standard BS-7750, which was the basic standard of ISO14001, and introduced an environmental system in 1996 when the “ISO14001 Environmental Management System” was issued. The system was examined by the Japan Quality Assurance Organization, and the Mitaka Plant and Saitama Plant (both now closed) were duly accredited in February 1998.

For the transition to ISO14001: 2004, our business operations, including headquarters, branch offices and business offices in Japan were all accredited in 2005.

The accreditation scope was extended to cover all plants in Japan with the additional certification of nine business offices including the Saitama Plant in 2011, adding four domestic business offices, including the Nagano Business Office that opened in FY2014.

We extended the registered scope to cover all plants and offices in Japan with the additional certification of nine domestic sales offices including the Saitama sales office in 2011, four domestic plants including the newly opened Nagano plant in FY2014, and the Kawagoe plant and Kanto Logistics Center in FY 2016.

● ISO 14001All our plants and offices in Japan have obtained “ISO14001”

certification, the international standard for environmental management systems, and we are working on company-wide environmental activities.(Registration number: JQA-E-90104)

Since our operations have been divided among multiple plants due to a reorganization of our business structure, we have reduced business travel expenses by introducing a video conferencing system. As part of our contribution to the society, we have appropriated 1 million yen as a donation for the purposes of research carried out by Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, aiming to protect biodiversity in Tokyo Bay.

Business Operation Initiatives● Energy Saving and Global Warming Prevention

As a result of our energy resource management, our energy consumption rate has reached 155,036 GJ (compared to 143,786 GJ in the previous fiscal year) and our greenhouse gas emission rate has reached 9,108 t-CO2 (compared to 8,072 t-CO2 in the previous fiscal year) with both figures indicating an increase from the previous fiscal year. Our power consumption rate is currently influenced by the power consumption of the production lines at our affiliated companies. In the future, we are going to shift our management policies toward reducing power consumption as One-JRC.

Also, we are going to introduce eco-friendly vehicles to be used at the branch offices and subdivisions of our sales offices in order to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

The reason for the negative trend in the consumption rate (per basic unit) in relation to the sales volume lies in a drastic drop in the sales volume at JRC in FY 2016. In the future, we are going to focus on increasing our sales volume by encouraging synergies and starting new business operations within the One-JRC system.

● Resource Saving and RecyclingIn FY 2016, our waste generation volume reached 2,783 t, indicating a 45% increase from the

previous fiscal year. Most of the waste was generated during construction work. The recycling rate reached 96.4%, falling short of our target by 0.6 points. In FY 2016, the recycling rates at the branch offices and subdivisions of our sales offices

reached the 97% target, but the Nagano plant fell short. In FY 2017, we need to increase the recycling rates at our Marine Service Center and offices located in the city.

● Compliance with Manufacturing Facility RegulationsWe have set our own self-standard values that are more stringent compared to the legislation in

order to manage our plants. The data below shows how our plants in Nagano area with manufacturing facilities currently

comply with the main legal standard values. (Our Mitaka factory, which used to have the main facilities, was closed in FY 2016).

● Editor’s noteThis is our Environmental Report 2017. In the previous fiscal year, we stopped our long-time manufacturing operations at the Mitaka

Factory and completed the move to our new plant in Nagano. The employees that moved to Nagano as a result seem to have adapted to the new environment well. To mark the Environment Month in June, our company collected photos and drawings to honor environmental conservation efforts. We received many images showing the scenery in and around Nagano prefecture. In recent years, our business environment has changed significantly. Disasters due to climate change occur more frequently, the Paris Agreement has been adopted to tackle the issue of global warming, and the information communication technology (ICT) is now commonly used for sharing real-time disaster information. These phenomena show that the world around us has undergone a broad spectrum of substantial changes affecting the environment, society, and technology. Therefore, businesses are now required to adapt to those changes. Our company is also going to search for ways to deal with the situation not only through our business operations but also through our efforts to make a contribution to the creation of a prosperous society. We are counting on everyone’ s continued support in the future.
