Planning for Assessment

Effective assessment begins with planning in the Teacher’s Edition Program Overview. In this resource, you will find a chart that lists the print and digital assessment resources.

The chart provides an overview of the diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments available to help you plan instruction and monitor your students’ progress.

Diagnostic Assessments

Assessment support starts at the beginning of the year with a variety of diagnostic assessments. Take a minute to explore some of the available diagnostic assessments.

Formative Assessments

Closely monitor your students’ progress throughout every lesson with a variety of formative assessments. At the start of each lesson, during Problem-Based Learning, you will find suggested questions in your Teacher’s Edition to check student understanding and guide instruction.

During the Visual Learning portion of the lesson, you can use the Try It! and Convince Me! exercises to assess your students’ understanding of the skills presented. You can use the results to differentiate instruction as needed.

Have your students complete the Do You Understand? and Do You Know How? exercises so you can verify comprehension directly after the instruction. Use your students’ responses to assess their conceptual understanding and procedural fluency of the lesson content. You can use the information from these assessments to determine if you need to review a specific skill or revisit content from the lesson.

Ongoing Formative Assessments

Ongoing formative assessments continue throughout the lesson, allowing you to prescribe appropriate instruction. Use your students’ work from the Practice and Problem Solving section to assign differentiated instruction. These exercises also provide opportunities for your students to engage in specific math practices (that is, the Standards for Mathematical Practice) as they solve a variety of problems in performance-based assessments.

Every lesson also includes Common Core Assessment Practice items in specialized formats to help students prepare for high-stakes Common Core tests.

At the end of a lesson, in the Assess and Differentiate section, use the Lesson Quiz to assess students’ understanding of the lesson’s skills and concepts. The online version of the Lesson Quiz is auto-scored and auto assigns intervention or enrichment exercises to your students via a library of differentiation resources. These resources include:

Visual Learning Animation Plus videos,

Digital Math Tools,

Reteach to Build Understanding worksheets,

MDIS 2.0 Intervention Lessons,

STEM Projects,

Additional Practice and Problem Solving, and

Online practice with MathXL for School®.

Summative Assessments

Summative assessments are available to evaluate your students’ learning at the end of a topic or group of topics. Have your students take the Topic Assessment in their Student Editions or online through Pearson Realize™ to analyze their mastery of concepts at the end of a topic. The assessments contain multiple-choice and drag-and-drop responses to help students prepare for the next generation of high-stakes tests. Print versions also contain short-answer items. Your students can also take alternative versions of the Topic Assessment found in the Assessment Sourcebook.

Performance Tasks

Performance Tasks, available in print and online, are another type of summative assessment.

You can use the Mid-Topic Performance Task to assess students’ mastery of the concepts and skills from the first part of the topic.

The Topic Performance Task assesses skills at the end of each topic. These assessments include several multi-step questions that require students to use problem-solving skills. Use the RtI Item Analysis for Diagnosis and Remediation and the Scoring Guide in your Teacher’s Edition eText to identify appropriate intervention lessons for your students.

Cumulative/Benchmark Assessment

Administer the Cumulative/Benchmark Assessment at the end of a group of topics. Also available in print and online, you can use the assessment results to determine whether your students have mastered the content taught in the last series of topics or they require additional instruction. The online version through Pearson Realize provides automatic scoring. Again, you can use the results from these assessments to assign your students remediation or enrichment activities from the differentiation library.
