STEM’s SPIRIT WEEK
Another year, another wonderful week of surprises! During this
year’s Stem Academy Spirit Week our students and faculty
wowed the crowd with their amazing attire. Each day of the
week was assigned a theme for participating students to dress
accordingly. We started the week off on Monday with a classic
theme: Pajama Day! We were able to wear our favorite and
most comfortable pajamas to school. From night gowns to
onesies, this was really a great way to overcome that Monday
dread. Once Tuesday came along, it was like seeing double;
Twin Day was here! For this theme students were allowed to
pick a partner and dress as if they were twins with similar
shirts, bottoms, and even hairstyles. This was truly a day of
deja’vu. Wednesday gave our scholars a chance to really show
off with college wear! Students dressed in the attire of their
favorite college or university, representing them well. The next
day, we experienced a clash of clans. Thursday was Old
School versus New School. Students and faculty alike came
dressed in a mixture of modern and oldies wear. The halls
were packed with generation upon generation of different
looks. Baggy pants, colorful leg warmers, designer jerseys, all
key elements were expressed on this day. Last but not least,
Friday served as our final day in the spirit week. This meant
only one thing, it was pep rally time! Students from each grade
level were given a color: seniors- black, juniors- grey,
sophomores- red, freshman-purple; Sixth through eighth- pink,
yellow, and blue respectively. They wore these to show class
pride. After the week's end, we were able to reflect on the
creative costumes and outfit designs by our students and
teachers. There was an overwhelming amount of participation
from all groups. We are a STEM school, and we sure know
how to rock!

Dishing Diaries … (A Freshman’s Dish)
Being a freshman at STEM Academy is a journey. New beginnings can bring new obstacles that change us to the very core. Since we come from being at the top of the food chain to the very bottom, adjusting to a world of different people who are way bigger than you (or smaller) can be a challenge. When I walk through the halls, I can’t help but wonder how I’m going to make it here? Some people seem to not like me and others seem to not acknowledge me. These types of situations allow you to reflect on yourself. Are you good enough? Should you change yourself? High school’s all about finding yourself and committing to being a person who contributes to the world as a successful adult. We make friends we keep for life and some friendships we can hardly stand to talk about in the future. Balancing the new workload and the shorter classes are a challenge because these changes require us to reach out to our teachers on our own time. So far I’ve been struggling with the stress of passing my classes. The different teaching styles are a little hard to adjust to due to the fact that some teachers teach much and others teach too much!! Getting back to the student body…It’s so frustrating to wrap my head around some of the people I’ve met! How can some be so inconsiderate to the point of getting us detention frequently? As far as lunch...what’s up with paying for more than one slice of pizza? The lines are so long and people are always cutting; it’s close to impossible to get lunch at a reasonable time. I guess you could say that the food is okay, but the macaroni salad is a no! The seniors are surprisingly nice and entertaining. They interact with us; I wasn’t expecting that at all. Lord knows that I was running home on “Freshman Friday” in apprehension! All in all, it’s been fine at STEM so far. The students here don’t cause problems, and I still have my friends who keep me going. Yeah, there are different obstacles that occur, but let’s hope November swings by with a kick! Happy Halloween!
~Samantha Augustin

Haunted
Hallway
The month of October was filled with many amusing events such
as the Haunted Hallway. The High School Student Council prepared
for this event and High School students served as volunteers. The
audience of the Haunted Hallway was our Middle School students.
Many of the middle school students who attended the Haunted
Hallway agreed that this event was thrilling and exceptionally better
than last year’s Haunted Hallway. This year the volunteers went all
out with their costumes, and their acting skills were authentic to the
Halloween characters they portrayed. This event was followed that
evening by the Middle School’s Fall Ball.

Sitting down with senior,
Navin Singh
An interview by Jamisha Montague
Jamisha: How did you get this far in your high school career?
Navin: Honestly, good friends. If I did not have Gino and Ciara
to motivate me I would not be enjoying my school year.
Jamisha: What would you say to anyone who is facing
difficulties in school and is strongly considering dropping out?
Navin: Stress. I would say do not let the intensity of classes and
homework get to you. Do not forget to enjoy your friends and
family and to breathe. Don’t get lost in the plethora of
homework.
Jamisha: You are finally experiencing your senior year of High
school. What has been your best moment so far?
Navin: Bonding with friends. I think I’ve created more of a
family rather than friends. The senior class is really a close knit
family and I loved getting to know them
Jamisha: Where do you see yourself 15 years from now?
Navin: Honestly, in 15 years I want to be happily married
probably expecting my first born child. Owning my own home,
one big enough for my entire family. I hope I have a successful
business of my own. Overall, in 15 years I want to be able to
say that my time in high school and eventually college was
worth the hard work and dedication.

Lady Panthers Soccer Team Page 6
“’Rome wasn’t built in a day.’ It takes time to build a great team. We
have girls with no soccer experience, enthusiastic, motivated, but a
short amount of time. With this continuous mindset, they will sure
enough become a strong team.”- Coach Sprague
“Success comes from long term planning. We had girls who couldn't
run and no soccer experience, but it's historical. This is the first
female soccer team, and I have been waiting 19 years for this
moment.” (Coach Philomene)
This year East Orange got their first ever girls’ soccer team coached
by Stem’s very own French teacher, Mr.Philomene, assisted by
Coach Sprague. The girls began their immense training in July of
2016 where they learned basic skills and tricks that would be vital to
their upcoming fall season. Within their three months of training the
girls’ soccer team grew incredibly close to one another- becoming
each other’s best cheerleaders and support system. This was best
put by fellow team member Aliyah Grey when she said, “First, we
were strangers and now we’re a family.” The strong foundation that
is blatant within the girls soccer team owes much of its credit to the
two captains; Stem Academy’s Doreen Ashanti and Campus High
School’s Adreana Nunez. The team started off with a strong season
when they tied 1-1 against North 13th. Unfortunately, the rest of the
season did not show as much luck because they have not yet won a
game this season. Nonetheless, they remain strong in their abilities
as they begin to close their season with only two games left. Stem
wishes the girls soccer team much luck in their final two games!

Homecoming 2016 The Homecoming tradition at STEM Academy began two short years ago when our illustrious student council president Ibny Mitchell proposed, planned, and brought the idea to life with the help of Student Council advisors Ms.Early and Mrs.T.. October 21st marked the success of Stem’s third annual homecoming. This year's theme was 1980’s and 1990’s hip hop. The gym was decorated with neon colored balloons, tableware, boom box centerpieces, and graffitied tarp paper. All artwork was done by STEM’s very own senior, Lioncio Davis. Free henna tattoos were available as well as food, drinks, and candy. The highlight of the evening was a young and upcoming artist \ by the name of “Indigo Sage” (aka senior- Jamie Robinson). She rapped several of her own original songs which can be found on SoundCloud.com or in her Instagram bio @indigo.sage.. In the weeks before homecoming STEM the candidates hung posters in nearly every hallway, classroom, and stairwell. Ultimately, the votes were cast and the winners announced.
Ms and Mr Stem : Anayah Brown and Giovanni Shine Princes: Christian Jones and Shawn Reid Princess: Jamisha Montague Duke: Lateef Maj Dutchess: Jorina Lynch Lady: Giovanna Walker Lord: Phritz Napoleon Congratulations to the 2016-17 winners who were featured in the Campus homecoming game on October 28th.
