EXECUTIVE SUMMARY As part of the EOPOWER – FP7 European Project on Earth Observation for Economic Empowerment, different sets of training materials for the GEO Societal Benefit Areas (SBA) were developed. The objective of the development of training packages is to facilitate capacity building in environmental applications of earth observation for economic development. The work packages target on an individual level as well as on the level of society with a clear focus on (but not limited to) the regions covered in the project. Task D 2.31 includes the development of nine sets of training materials for the following GEO SBAs: • Disasters • Health • Energy • Climate, • Agriculture • Ecosystems • Biodiversity • Water • Weather For the EOPOWER capacity building materials and courses in environmental applications of EO for economic development building blocks of 3 day courses were developed which correspond to 1 EC. Students/learners following five of those 3 day courses would accumulate in this way 5 EC’s, which resembles for example a regular module at ITC, the Netherlands. The courses have a standardised set up and include an introductory video and posters, a description of learning outcomes, a course structure composed by different learning units with prescribed workload per learning unit, learning materials and references to additional information. The introductory video and posters present in an attractive, quick and easy to understand manner the state of the art of Earth Observation techniques for an application within a specific SBA. In this way, the introduction materials of the training packages can additionally be used to raise awareness on Earth Observation among the general public.

An example of the list of capacity building materials for the SBA Biodiversity is given in Annex 1. Annex 2 shows a poster for the SBA Biodiversity as an example of multi-‐level capacity building material (for experts as well as for policy makers and general public). All the capacity building materials are currently made available through the ITC web-‐server using the following web-‐link to an interactive power-‐point presentation: http://menhir.itc.utwente.nl:5000/fbsharing/KGKOZXKU Unzip the file and double click on the index file to open the presentation.
