Preface The purpose of this document is to describe the variables included in the Ethernet communication interface for EPIC III and how to interpret them. For a more detailed description of the how these variables affect the behaviour of the EPIC III function, see the manuals for the EPIC III Ethernet.

1. Technical organisation of the Ethernet interface The interface utilises several services: Modbus/TCP, FTP, Telnet, HTTP and two special protocols encapsulated by UDP. The access of variables is done by Modbus/TCP, and therefore this document is concentrated on this service. FTP is used when updating the EPIC III controller program and the web-page interface. HTTP (and related protocols) is used when utilising the web-page interface, and the UDP protocols are used when administrating Ethernet and in the internal EPIC master function. The Modbus/TCP interface has an address-space ranging from word address (register) 000h to 7FFh. The same address-space can also be accessed by bit addressing (coils). In this case, the bit addresses starts at 0000h and ends at 7FFFh. However, not all of the available memory is used. The address space is divided into two equal parts. The first is a read-only area, and the second is read-write area. The read-only area is used mainly for measurements, and is therefor named "Measurement Area" in this document, while the read-write area is called Parameter Area".
2. Data storage and interpretation Data is stored in big-endian format, i.e. with the most significant word first in case of a long word. Coils may be read as registers. In this case 16 coils are stored in a word, with the lowest numbered coil in the most significant bit. The number of the register is the coil-number divided by 16. Example: coil number 4000h - 400Fh may be read in register 400h, with the coil 4000h as the most significant bit of the register. If coil 4000h is one and the rest of the coils are 0, the register gets the value 8000h.
3. Supported Modbus function code There are several types of messages in the Modbus/TCP protocol. The supported function codes in this product are 1 (Read coils), 2 (Read input discretes), 3 (Read multiple registers), 4 (Read input registers), 5 (Write coil), 6 (Write single register), 7 (Read exception status), 15 (Force multiple coils), 16 (Force multiple registers), 22 (Mask write register) and 23 (Read/Write registers. The exception codes supported are 01 (Illegal function), 02 (Illegal data address) and 03 (Illegal data value).
